Should Starbucks bring the Dark Cherry Mocha to the United States? What do you think?
Currently, this beverage is offered in China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and possibly other international markets as part of the seasonal holiday line up. I know baristas who probably think that any beverage with whip creamย and sprinkles on top and isn’t really a true “Italian espresso beverage” but we all know that people go to Starbucks for their favorite indulgence and not because they’re seeking to have an italian espresso beverage experience. If one visits mystarbucksidea.com and searches on “Cherry” there are an abundance of results of people wanting Starbucks to offer a cherry syrup. Lots of people want it for a Frappuccino flavor. I think I might like to try a Passion Tea Lemonade sweetened with Cherry! I was sad after Melon syrup was discontinued because suddenly my Passion Tea Lemonades seemed really dull.
I would love to know if theย Cherry Mocha was ever tested here in the U.S. My guess would be that it was, but I don’t know for sure.ย Here are a few mystarbucksidea.com threads on “Cherry” flavored beverages (some threads may be closed or merged by the MSI moderators):
If anyone reading this blog has tried the Cherry Mocha (or know if/when it has been tested in the US), please tell us how you like it! Looking forward to your comments, as always. ๐

isn’t seattle the home of starbucks? I find it interesting that they have all these different products and flavours that aren’t available in their home city/country!
you definitely have to petition them!
Yes! The Dark Cherry Mocha sounds like a total win to me!
I’ve been wanting for them to bring the cherry mocha stateside for years!
The real question is why don’t they have: Amaretto, Hazelnut, Almond Syrups and certainly the list could go on…. I think it was a real mistake when Starbucks didn’t carry Torani Syrups anymore… A “premium” coffee house should certainly carry “premium” syrups. A local independent coffee house in my area carries every flavor in the book. And while I personally don’t care too much for flavored syrups in my coffee or espresso, I sure do love an Italian soda every once in a while and that’s where Starbucks looses my business. In my opinion they need to carry more syrup flavors.
That does sound delicious
one thing that always makes me hesitant to stray from my regular drink is the lack of visibility of what syrup choices there are. I’d probably make up some of my own mixes if i knew. I also might try buying some flavors they don’t carry and trying them at home (if my espresso machine had not broken at least)
Dark Cherry Mocha is one of my faves though its highly indulgent!
Some people find it a bit too sweet. But people with a sweet tooth like me love it for the chocolatey-cherry taste. It works as a seasonal coffee certainly (if not a bit more of a hot chocolate: though it still tastes like a mocha despite the additions)
Eggnog Latte has grown on me this year also and Gingerbread continues to be a fave
OH YEAH! Yes please……
OMG my mouth watered! LOL
Also, it’s in Indonesia as well.
I used to buy the Mocha Valencia all the time but it’s been discontinued so I don’t normally buy many of the current lineup of sweetened drinks at Starbucks.
That said, I would buy the Cherry Mocha.
My grandmother used to buy me a box of chocolate covered cherries every Christmas and it’s a great flavor combination that carries many fond memories.
Very interesting! I am not a cherry fan, but as soon as I read Dark Cherry Mocha it peaked my interest.
I always drink the same thing, so it needs to be something really awesome to sway me.
Dark Cherry Mocha has been awfully popular here in Australia, and the good thing about it is the cherry flavour itself is not artificial tasting.
Are you sure they don’t have Hazelnut at Starbucks? While I was traveling through the US and Canada, I was fascinated to see sugar free Hazelnut, Cinnamon Dolce and Caramel..
They definitely have hazelnut syrup here. I’ve had iced tall hazelnut coffee at Starbucks before. it’s very good. Yeah @amazonV, they rarely post their syrups up. i only found out that starbucks had toffee nut syrup when i went through the Starbucks iPhone App.
So I Googled ‘dark cherry mocha,’ (got thousands of hits, of course) – everyone seems to adore it! Why isn’t it sold here?
Please offer it here, Starbucks, I want to see what all the fuss is about!
Most definitely! I love mochas, I love cherries. Sounds like a win/win to me.
Yep. I like cherries no matter what color they are and would defiantley make my mouth light up and my tummy say howdy I just can’t get enough of that wonderful stuff.
@AmazonV, I think the syrup choices are usually listed somewhere on the menu boards. You can add a syrup to nearly any drink you want!
If Starbucks brought the Dark Cherry Mocha to the U.S., I would definitely try it at least once. I don’t regularly drink the more complex drinks because of their sweetness (and higher price), but a significant number of Starbucks customers prefer drinks like these, so I imagine it would be successful stateside.
On a side note, there’s a great Washington-based company called Chukar Cherries that sells several different kinds of gourmet chocolate-covered cherries, and this blog post is giving me a craving!
Hi Melody! Cherry Mocha sounds delicious!
@brendan206 i promise i’ve looked on the board at my starbucks (tiny mall kiosk) but i’ll check again this morning – i know some of the flavors due to what drinks use, but i know also there are more flavors – sort of like an ice cream parlor there are many ice cream flavors but only so many in stock (esp. at kiosks)
Hi Brendan! I’m going to have to take a closer look at the menu boards near me. I don’t recall seeing the syrup choices on the menu boards. What store are you seeing that in??
Hi JP! Good to see you here!
@Damien – I am pretty sure we DO have Hazelnut syrup here in Seattle but I will double check.
Cherry+Chocolate+Coffee??? That sounds like a delicious combo. They should definitely introduce this beverage in the US.
Dear Melody,
I am so touched by the gift of Christmas blend coffee and other Starbucks goodies you sent to me. It feels so right to have Christmas blend coffee in the house. I felt both his and your spirits when I saw the contents of the package. Thank you so much. I feel like crying. Today is the one year anniversary of his passing. I appreciate how much you care.
Love,
Melanie
I don’t really like the hot version of the dark cherry mocha, but the frappuccino is delicious!!!!
Tweeted before I read. Hoped it was on the secret menu. Sounds great you are just the gal to start the movement.
I, personally, don’t like cheery flavors, but I think it would be really popular here in the U.S. Maybe an a new item after the New Year, since there’s a lot going on right now with the Holiday flavors.
Sounds like its been successful so far. I’ve been hearing about it for a while. Although, for a fruity mocha drink, we also have the raspberry mochas. I think if it were released in my area, people would say it sounds good, but stick with their regular skinny whatever lattes.
When will it be available? My mouth is watering already. I hope before the gold card and it’s 10% discount becomes a part of history.
Hi Steve! The Dark Cherry Mocha is an international beverage now, and currently not offered anywhere in the U.S. (as far as I know). I don’t even know if there are plans to bring it to the U.S.
Um yum yum! I absolutely love that ad graphic from China! I’m into red and white right now for the holidays and that one is just beautiful!
I can’t comprehend why a Starbucks drink is available overseas and not in the United States, at least in Seattle where Starbucks in headquartered. I guess that’s corporate logic. Strange!
Melody and AmazonV, I will look more closely next time I’m in a Starbucks. I might be wrong about the flavors being listed on the menu. It might be that only some stores do it. Under “Make it Your Drink” there’s a tiny little bit of text, and it lists Vanilla, Caramel, etc. as “Add Syrup” options. This link is to an example (not my own) of what it might look like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cellphonesusie/2330487594/sizes/l/
I tried a dark BERRY mocha frappuccino (in Greece or London, can’t remember which) that was an EMEA offering in the summer… I drink about one frappuccino per year but given that I thought it was really good. It was like a java chip frappuccino with berry flavoring.
The thing is.. I don’t think it would work without heavy promotion. Like the raspberry mocha that one can order now… it’s not an extremely popular US flavor but we could sell more USDs if we really promoted it. I think the dark cherry/currant type flavors are by default more popular in Europe and that it’d therefore take off better over there.
I agree it’d be fun to try!
[…] Melody Should Starbucks introduce the Dark Cherry Mocha to the US? Even before I read the article, my answer yes! Let’s make it happen Starbucks. I love […]
as long as it is a stronger cherry flavour than that used in the tully’s cherry cordial mocha, i would love it ๐
i find the tully’s version to taste neither of cherry or chocolate, even though i’ve had it twice now!
The Dark Cherry Mocha is being offered here in Sbux Argentina and it has good reception. I don’t really like it because it tastes as an ice-cream rather than a beverage. You can check it on: http://www.starbucks.com.ar/Novedades.aspx
Why not offer it in the United States and specifically in Seattle? Actually Starbucks is a United States company.
Actually Starbucks is an INTERNATIONAL company ๐
and personally, Melody, I don’t like the Dark Cherry Mocha very much. way too sweet for me. But then again I don’t like hardly any of the sweet beverages. Starbucks has different beverages in different reasons for so many different variables. Maybe they are doing more than one or two test runs (meaning EMEA had it last year as well) before they offer it in North America? If I were in marketing I’d know more but sadly I just pay the bills ๐
Hi all,
YES! Please, StarbUcks, start carrying/making a Chocolate and Cherry blend for my Frappuccinos. I used to buy a Frap like drink at our local mall, but then that store went out of business (or just moved, but I can’t find it). The drink was called ‘Chocolate Cherry Cordial’. IT WAS THE BEST!
It’s comming to Canada. Confirmed
Yes Pinkie Starbucks is an international company but it’s headquarters is in Seattle and I’m sure they have dark cherries here is Seattle so whyu don’t they make the drink here?
Yumm… I hope they make it! It would be delicious in a frappuccino!
I found it but does that mean no one will ever again comment on it?
Maybe this will be the “mystery” drink for the spring promo that we have been told to save the dark chocolate curls from peppermint mocha for…
(Reply to shiftdoug) – It’s even just exciting to new that there is a new “mystery” drink for Spring. It seems like it has been a long time since there has really been a fun new syrup and espresso beverage. The last huge new drink (other than seasonal caramel brulee) … was it the honey latte?
I know this post is WAY up there, but re Torani syrups: They are horrible to work with (from personal experience).
If you were to use this for a cherry flavour, for example, it really curdles the milk. The little coffee shop I used to work for switched to Torani and we all hated it-customers too. There was no way in heck to make a steamed milk in anything fruity, and it was frustrating to have to tell customers so.
Starbucks syrups are of much higher quality.
And I’m pumped if it’s true we’re getting this mocha here in Canada ๐
(Reply to PinkyPie) – While I do not usually go for the sugary drinks at Starbucks I really liked the old Mocha Valencia but it came with an extra shot of espresso.
Using multiple syrups/sauces makes the beverages too sweet but the extra shot helps bring back the coffee flavor and cuts the sweetness significantly.
starbucks really needs to introduce some new syrup options, instead of continually taking options away. i was a huge fan of valencia, then it was gone. switched to melon, gone. it’s incredibly frustrating.
a true coffee shop offers almost any flavor you can think of. why doesn’t starbucks do this?
I’m from America and recently took a trip to London for the holidays.
I tried the Dark Cherry Mocha and it was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever tasted at Starbucks.
PLEASE Starbucks. I’m *BEGGING* you. Bring cherry syrup to America. PLEASE.
I’d hate to have to start sitting on a plane for 11 hours on a regular basis just for a cherry mocha!
Bring it on now. It’ll certainly make my mouth light up and my tummy say howdy I just can’t get enough of that wonderful stuff!
Miss Mayhem,
You can run two hours south and get the dark cherry mocha in Mexico.. I grab one every time I pop over the border. Wish they’d come here. :/
