Melody invites you on a trip to the first Starbucks: Imagine it’s a Sunday morning at about 7:30 a.m. You’re visiting Seattle and decide to drop by the first Starbucks and beat the crowds. Pike Place Market is just starting to open and many of the shops are still closed. Beecher’s Cheese is still closed but Piroshky Piroshky, a few doors down from the first Starbucks, is already open. You grab a freshly-baked cardamom cinnamon braid roll from Piroshky Piroshky. Mmmm. It’s warm, in the high sixties, and you actually found a reasonable parking spot three blocks away because it’s still early. What are you going to find at this special Starbucks? In this blog post, together we’re going to go have a delicious hand-crafted beverage at 1912 Pike Place. Let’s go inside and meet the store manager and have a nice quick visit to 1912 Pike Place Starbucks:
*******
The Market: You arrive at Starbucks and notice the simple lettering above the door. The red brick road in front is empty. That’s because it is 7:30 on a Sunday morning. Don’t drive down this road. Don’t even try. If you’re a local, you’ll know that pretty much you have to park in a lot, or find street parking, and walk a few blocks to the market. If you’re a tourist, you might try driving down this road and find that it’s blocked off to cars because of street vendors. And even if the street is open, you might find that you will move at under 5 miles per hour for a frustrating two or three blocks, and wait even longer to try and negotiate your way through a massive crowd of people filling this street. Dear tourists, there is almost no such thing as “Doris Day” parking at Pike Place Market. However be sure to check all the little shops up and down Pike Place and at the Market. You will find everything from the fish market, to a grocery store called “Pear”, to a Seattle’s Best Coffee in Post Alley.
Inside the Store: You step inside the store. On the north wall of the store there is a world of special merchandise available only at this Starbucks. (Although in March of 2009, Starbucks started letting the store at 1st and Pike sell some of this merchandise too, but outside of those two stores, there is NO Starbucks selling the limited merchandise made for the Pike Place Starbucks.) What to choose? A wall of special Pike Place barista bears is looking for a good home. You could take home some Pike Place Special Reserve coffee. Pike Place Special Reserve is NOT the same coffee as Pike Place Roast. The floors look like early 20th century hardwoods that have been trafficked by literally a million feet. (I assume that at some point the floors have been updated or something, but they’re so worn and weathered that definitely those floors have been there for a long long time). Remember that at this store only, there is a special Starbucks card. You can see an image of the 1912 Pike Place card here. (The framed and signed card).
Meet the Store Manager: Now once inside the store you meet the store manager and some baristas. Of course, on this visit to 1912 Pike Place, the store manager immediately greeted me by name and smiled big and said “Hi Melody!”. This store manager (Chad) is a totally nice and wonderful guy. I am so glad he has this special store. Chad introduced me to new a barista having recently transferred into his store. He says, “Hey Melody meet Deb! She transferred here from Snohomish County.” (Obviously none of this is verbatim). Turns out Deb came from one the stores up north that briefly had Sorbetto in it. Oh how I loved Sorbetto … but I digress. Chad and I made small talk and I told him that I wanted to show off and feature his store in an upcoming blog post! Chad graciously agreed to a picture of him for the blog. But don’t worry: Chad is this friendly and welcoming to all his customers! It’s a fact, if you’re a Starbucks partner at 1912 Pike Place, you will end up in a million photographs! Chad has had his picture taken many times at this store.
Order a beverage: The next thing we need to do is order a drink! What are you having? Chad asked me what I was having so I asked for a “doppio con panna“. Chad remembered that I only like this drink in a small porcelain demi-tasse cup. If this beverage is made in a paper cup, it doesn’t taste right to me. The whip cream will stick to the sides of the paper cup, making it difficult to drink. The only way to have this beverage is in porcelain. This is my favorite store for a doppio con panna. Beautifully hand-tamped shots. Starbucks Espresso Roast. It’s amazing. There is no other store where I can have this beverage exactly like this. Even at 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea, or Roy Street Coffee the baristas use a single-origin bean or a different blend for their espresso beverages. I have heard it said often that a single-origin coffee or a better blend is superior to Starbucks Espresso Roast. Maybe I have a pedestrian palate, but I genuinely like Espresso Roast, which is not available at 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea. On this morning, Chad said he needed to check his shots and so he pulled a couple into shot glasses right before making my delicious hand-crafted beverage. I took a picture of the shots that Chad was carefully watching to get them just right (those were the shots he pulled to ‘check them’) and also a picture of Chad putting the whip cream on my beverage. This is the ONLY Starbucks using a La Marzocco machine. The Espresso Roast is measured out, ground, and hand-tamped for your beverage. There is no food at this Starbucks, but there is a complete beverage menu including Vivanno smoothies, and Frappuccinos also.
Hope you enjoyed your trip to 1912 Pike Place!

Right now I put comment here! YES!
Oops, I’m in Japan now. I’m sorry.
I’m going to give some pics and comment about 1912 Pike to this article later. 😀
Hi Melody! A fan from the Philippines, hope you can visit us here too and let’s have coffee. Have a great day!
Again, another great great blog entry. I am always impressed.
Hi Melody! A fan here in the Philippines, hope you can visit here and we’ll have some coffee. Have a great day!
I have been to this Starbucks and loved it. Thanks for the post
Thanks for the tourist tips. Oh Melody this sounds so fun! I think you have planned out my sunday while I am in seattle!
nice!!..sadly i am from the other side.. 🙁
btw, while having coffee time at my fav SB place, i overheard some serious discussion among partners..
something like..”target”..”selling”…”must sell this..that”..”or else”…
is that true those partners sometimes under pressure in order to hit certain target?
I was afraid because there is a new drive thru opened somewhere in town, the management decide to ‘close’ some of the place in order to cut cost…
My mouth is watering. 😉
Wow, Melody! I’ve got this store on my “to visit” wishlist, but this post makes me want to pack up and haul tail across the country RIGHT NOW!!!! It sounds like the manager and partners are doing a great job of keeping Starbucks standards high and shining at this special store. Next time you go in, let them know that this barista is very impressed!
Another great virtual experience Melody! I have a t-shirt from this store that a friend sent to me a few yrs ago…..whenever I wear it, all baristas are always amazed about it. I would so love to visit this place…..
Thank goodness I have at least ‘found’ (it’s been there 10yrs but just got their 2 clovers this past winter) the Streets of Woodfield store. It really is heaven-ly. It’s just 9.2miles from me, but on city streets = about 30min.
Anyway, thanx again for this great view….
@Nob, @Justine @BostonStarbucksRebel @Jen @MarkWeinrib @26Life @AmazonV
@Nob – Hi there! You’re a little bit outside of the geography for the contest my friend. Just saying hello in the comments.
@Justine – Thanks for commenting on the blog! I seem to have a few new faces right now, and from all over the world. I had a previous blog entry talking a little bit about Starbucks in the Philippines because a customer had sent me photos of her store and the chalk board art. It was very cool, and I was impressed – The Philippines is one of the few places Starbucks still uses La Marzocco machines in some of their stores. But sorry I didn’t include the Philippines in the contest (last paragraph of the blog entry is contest information).
Here is the blog post on the Philippines:
http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2010/04/10/starbucks-in-the-philippines-the-around-the-globe-and-chalk-art-adventures-continue/
^ Those are the kind of photographs that make me so happy to receive. I am so thankful to that reader for sending me those pics.
@BostonStarbucksRebel – I can gladly send you a prize to Boston. I don’t think you tweeted this but you can get a free 1/2 pound of Pike Place Special Reserve. See information in last paragraph and send me an email.
@MarkWeinrib – Welcome to my site! I’m seeing a few new faces. How did you find me? Read the instructions in the last paragraph if you want your free 1/2 pound of Pike Place Special Reserve.
@26Life – Thanks for coming back to the site. You’re also so far away! As for “targets” I know that there are targets that the store has to make. I worry because I am much more “experience” oriented and hope that the customer experience comes before a overly intense preoccupation with metrics and goals. At least in Seattle, I don’t hear baristas really complaining about the store goals. Either they are able to make them easily or the pressure isn’t so great. ?? You’re in Malaysia. ?? Do the partners there have the same thing?
@Jen – Nice to meet you! Hey tell your friends about my blog! So many new faces. Take a look at the instructions in the last paragraph if you want your free bag of Pike Place Special Reserve.
“Chad is a totally nice and wonderful guy”. Yes, I think so! He is a very kind and good person.
I had conversation with him in the end of May.
Here is the pic. http://twitpic.com/25h20i
I wanted to do conversation with him more, but I was not able to do so because a woman rushed me on the telephone. The woman was the lawyer who waited for me at 1st&Pike store. LOL
I usually visit 1912 Pike at around 8:00 a.m. Because, in daytime there, I cannot have conversation with the partners because many tourists overflow. In addition, the store has a parking place for me at front of an entrance.
For my private use? http://twitpic.com/25h2c4 http://twitpic.com/25h2em
Me too, I have ordered his Espresso Roast. That was last summer. http://twitpic.com/25hahk http://twitpic.com/25haki
By the way, I have a lot of photos of 1912 Pike Place, but do not have a former photo to move into to the place of now. There was the store in the 1 block north before.
http://crosscut.com/2008/04/09/starbucks/13251/The-%3Ci%3Ereal%3C-i%3E-first-Starbucks/
I want photo of the former place if it is possible. Anybody, give me time machine (De Lorean) please.
Melody, I thank for your article. Your article is going to let me go to 1912Pike. I want to visit the store right now!
Thank you. Very much.
Thanx a lot about wonderful trip!! i enjoyed a lot and felt like ive visited the pikeplace;)
I went here on my honeymoon, long before I worked for starbucks–the barista’s kindly took our photo in front of the store, and we took home a wonderful pound of pike place reserve.
Melody- When we were in Seattle, we went to this starbucks and loved its charm. Got a mug from here. It was crowded, but we loved it. Nice to see a review of it. I remember the visit.
Also I laughed about that, the 1st photo. The signboard is hung by new hooks. 😀
Melody, you are eyewitness who watched a signboard flown by wind.
Absolutely love this post!! Probably one of my favorites! Thanks for the close and personal tour! 🙂 Loved all the pictures
This store is definitely on my list of places I must go see!! I tweeted this blog post too!
I hope I met all of the parameters you requested in some form…you should have a few emails from me floating around on the contact you portion as well as another email address I had to use!
I bet the espresso there is heavenly. Such a legendary store. When I was a kid, my aunt (who introduced my family to Starbucks) showed off a picture of her standing outside that store. Her description of it made it sound so interesting. There are street performers, it smelled like coffee, and the crowd was huge. Its cool to see a quiet picture of the store.
Also, isn’t there a pig or something above the door? Anybody know what that’s about?
there is an independent coffee shop here that has a La Marzocco but not Starbucks of course and their espresso is no where near as good. Now I have to stop and get a doppio con panna on my way home from work today! 🙂
I remember only 5 years back switching from our La Marzocco to the Verismo… i think we were one of the last it seems to have switched. I also LOVE espresso roast when done correctly from a LaM…
Yeah! Done correctly! There was a license store at the mall near where I grew up that had a LaMarcocco, and they pulled shots that were 100 seconds long! I remember them telling me the longer the shot, the better. But now that I work for Starbucks Coffee Co. I know this not to be true at all.
I love your tours of stores… You always give a great description of the fun things about the place, instead of a checklist of what the baristas did right/wrong.
Holy moly – I have a lot of catching up to do in the comments already.

provide good place to hang out..plus free WIFI too
Great post! I must say visiting this store was easily the highlight of my last trip to Seattle!
I am a little surprised you didn’t mention the original starbucks logo used at this location though. One of my favorite things about the unique merchandise available there is the original starbucks logo!
@Dest and @CamSpi –
@Dest – Welcome to the blog! Hope you’ll poke around a bit. Thank you for leaving me a comment. 🙂
As to the unique logo: The store has enough small details of unique things to point out that I didn’t want to write a book, but that’s a good one. The logo at 1912 Pike Place is the ONLY logo where the Siren has exposed nipples. There was a 2008 version of the logo, slightly changed and altered, with the major difference being that the 2008 version has more hair so that her nipples get covered up. That 2008 brown logo – the Siren with much more hair – is commonly found in many stores as their stores get design updates.
@CamSpi – You’re right about the pig! I mentioned it and told the story behind it in an old blog post about Joseph Michelli’s book The Starbucks Experience. I took a pic of the pig at 1912 Pike Place but decided that there wasn’t space to re-tell the story of “Pork and Beans”. I try to keep most blog entries a manageable length.
I’ll have to read that article, then!
And I didn’t even know about the contest. Woohoo!
I love this store, and the market itself. I have been there several times. The fish market, the flowers, the ferries, the weather. It is all perfect.
@Mel,
You continue to amaze me, not just with your passion for Starbucks, but with your time, that you have to dedicate to keeping this blog as awesome as it is. Great stuff, that has inspired a great community.
Do you know anything to the rumor that that Starbucks is NOT the first one. I heard that they outgrew the original location, or it burned down, or something like that, and then they moved into that location. Not sure, but I remember seeing some pics that seemed to confirm that. Maybe there are old business licenses on file somewhere, or something. Not that it matters, just something that I would love to know.
…just my 2 beans
WO
@WOnet
This is one of the best blog posts so far…I enjoyed so mucbh reading it!
This wonderful post evoked all my reminders of my Seattle trip back in 2008
Unfortunately my stay was much too short to visit the first store…I just got to the Starbucks Support Center on Utah Ave, which is, sure, also really cool.
Since this time I always felt so disappointed about that…I want to go back to Seattle ASAP.
But anyway…I am happy enough to own some merch of the Pike Place store: the Citry Mug and the new white Mug (THX to Melody).
And you must have been very lucky when you shot the photos…almost every other pic that I see is full of people and crowds.
Ok.
Now, see…. with as much as I prefer traditional italian style coffee shops , I like making Sbux espresso at home.
So, with the porcelain cups… and the La Marzocco…. I could be perfectly happy with this place!!
Man. I wish the ones here had porcelain cups. Not a fan of the to-go ones…
@Tina – I’m not sure how many have the tiny cups for espresso, but I know my local one has at least a few small cups. All the stores should also have tall, grande and venti mugs and cold cups. They’re not really advertised, but you can get one if you ask for one. Ask at your store – they might have the tiny cups too!
@Wonet @Tina and @Emma
@WOnet – Oh yes you’re right. I still count it as the “first” Starbucks thought it’s sort of a relocated first Starbucks. My understanding is that the first Starbucks in 1971 was somewhere on Western Ave. about where the restaurant Etta’s is today. http://tomdouglas.com/index.php?page=ettas I have heard verbal lore that in the mid-1970s (maybe 74 or 75) something happened, and Starbucks relocated to its current location. I don’t know what it was. I have heard that there was fire damage. By the time it relocated (and again this all just oral history I’ve heard) there were 3 stores operating: The one in University Village (store 302); The old store in Bellevue (Store 303), and possibly the one on Broadway on Cap Hill (Store 304).
http://www.deadprogrammer.com/starbucks-logo-mermaid
^ That website has some really old history on it, suggesting the same thing. There is a small image of the list of stores that appeared on the 1985 coffee bags, listing six stores. It also appears thatt store #304 has also been “relocated” at least once because 516 Broadway East is NOT a Starbucks currently. It is a Vietnamese restaurant.
It’s a debatable point. I still consider this to be the “first store” but an extreme view might be that it is the fourth store. But if that’s the case, it’s hard to tell what is what because things get rebuilt, and relocated all the time. University Village used to be a nothing place with an old book store and a grocery store when I was in undergrad, and I think the Univ. Village Starbucks has moved slightly too as that area has been revamped and improved.
@Tina – There are very very few Starbucks in Seattle without porcelain cups, and I would imagine that most stores world-wide have them. Please tell me your Starbucks has some for-here ware.
@Emma – I will tell Chad you said that. The previous manager was “Corrinne” and I had liked her very much and so I was worried that I would have to go through an adjustment period getting used to a new manager. Corrinne left under the best of circumstances – She took a maternity leave and then transferred to another Starbucks much closer to her home, no longer wanting to have any commute. I realized when I met Chad that they found an equally as wonderful person to replace Corrinne.
@mel @merryncole I don’t think they do, honestly. I’ll go in in the next couple days and see…Although I’m tempted to call and ask now. It’s pretty disappointing. <3 cappuccinos… can't STAND to drink them from a paper cup. 🙁
Melody, thank you for sharing this! I was telling my mom recently that I’d love to go to Seattle, she travels there on business quite often (she works for another Seattle based company) and suggested that the next time she goes I could come along. I’d love go to see this store as well as the rest of the Pike Place Market. I do have both a Pike Place travel mug and a mug for home which my mom bought for me the last time she was there as well as a beautiful painting from a shop across the street?
I know you were at a loss the other day for things to blog about…personally I think this one was fantastic!
(are there g/c’s left? I tweeted! @michellehacon)
This is a great post – thanks for sharing and introducing us to this store.
It’s nice to “meet” Chad and Deb. I was recently in Denver and had considered doing a “store visit” write up on a couple of the stores I visited. The stores themselves (layout, etc.) were not that remarkable but the baristas really knew how to connect with customers and it made for a very welcoming Starbucks Experience in Denver.
Doppio con Panna has been a favorite of mine. A year or two ago when they had the chocolate whipped creme it made the drink even better!
re “Doris Day” parking, my kids call it “rock star” parking…I think they’re aging us…
Congratulations to “elected candidates”. 😀
The famous first Starbucks. Thanks for the tour, Melody!

Okay update on the Gift Card portion of this contest – See last paragraph of the blog article above:
(1) AmazonV
(2) Hayley
(3) Akarisame
(4) WOnet
(5) MerrynCole
(6) Michelle
(7) CoffeeVanilla
(8) Wongster360
– So all of those people tweeted this blog post AND included “@SbuxMel” in their tweets (tagging me). I had wanted people to tell me they had done this in this thread but close enough.
So there are still FOUR more gift cards available for those who follow the tweeting instructions in the last paragraph of this blog post (1) Leave a comment (2) tweet this blog post (3) include “@SbuxMel” in your tweet (4) come back and tell me you tweeted. I realize it’s a lot of work so I will up the card to $10 but it is strictly the next FOUR people who can follow those rules.
If anyone thinks I need his or her mailing info for a prize, please email me Sbux206@StarbucksMelody.com
Good luck!
I’m going to have to agree with a lot of people on Twitter and say that this has to be one of your best posts Melody. If only I lived in Seattle just so that I may visit this store.
I tweeted. ;] Though I think I should begin to tweet all of your posts that I read.
The 1912 starbucks card is my FAVORITE card 🙂 I received it a few years back as a work gift from one of our vendors.I like that you framed your signed cards – I’m thinking that framing my 1912 card (even though it doesn’t have that AWESOME Howard signature) would make a nice wall hanging…I can do that with all my cards – THANKS Mel! Heh coffee AND decor inspiration! I love it. Also thanks for the virtual tour. The last few times I’ve tried going there its been SO crowded I’ve shied away. Looks like I need to make an EARLY sunday morning trip! 🙂
I really liked this post! Brought back a lit of memories of my own experiences there. I can still see spoon man out front whackin his spoons all over the place as he’s jammin with one if his guitar buddies and the guy with the mini upright piano gettin his classical on down on the corner. This is definitely a destination best saved fir the weekend to get the entire market experience! Thanks for the post Melody! I RT’d it for ya! 😀
I love all the history and enthusiasm in this post, i think it’s the most mouth watering one recently!
@Melody Thank you for the card form the last contest, it’s now my favorite! I still use the green card daily though to earn the conservation international credits, but I like to show it off 🙂
I’ll admit, never had a Doppio con Panna so it’s now on the checklist for things to try (along with pike’s special reserve)
@Nob thanks for the pictures!
I did notice the merchandise in the pictures in this post…I drooled a little I’ll admit it! 🙂 I absolutely can’t wait to visit there someday and buy a ton of stuff!! That would be one of the few Bearistas I would get. I think I like one of the mugs I saw in the background too, it looks similar to one of the travel mugs I have…gold but has Starbucks just written across the front, no siren logo.
The special Pike Place card from this store is tied with only 1 other for my most favorite Starbucks card! The Pike Place special reserve…what notes are in that coffee? I am fascinated by this store! I’m tweeting it again. This has been one of my favorite posts! Thanks for letting us visit this store from 1000 miles away!
I just got home from being out and about all day. It’s past midnight here so I bet the cards are all gone 🙁
Thats ok though, this blog is fantastic. I showed it to a friend I made at a bux today and he said he would be following your blog now as well. Keep up the good work, I look forward to reading all your posts.
