What better way to start 2011 than with a fun contest for a $5.00 gift card? There will be 30 winners of a $5 Starbucks gift card! That is a lot! I want to get a lot of people participating in this, and I am hoping that my readers will share this blog post either on Facebook, twitter, StumbleUpon, or on whatever your favorite social media is.
It seems like everyone has a favorite Starbucks coffee mug and often there is a good story behind it too. The idea behind this blog post is to collect those pictures of mugs and their corresponding stories. Here are the rules of the contest. Please read them carefully:
- Send Melody an image of your favorite Starbucks coffee mug. This mug must be a Starbucks-branded mug. This image must be attached to an email, and cannot be sent as a flickr upload or other hosted upload. My email address is Melody@StarbucksMelody.com.
- The size of the image cannot be smaller than 400 x 400 and must be in a jpg file format.
- Here is the hard part. Each email must include a minimum of two sentences, but not more than five sentences, explaining why this is your favorite Starbucks coffee mug.
- Please include the date that you purchased the mug, or generally the date the mug was produced, if possible. For example, if the bottom of the mug includes a year, PLEASE include that in your entry so that we can see how the styles of mugs have changed over the years. If you only remember that, ‘I think I bought this mug in about 1994 or 1995’ then please include that information.
- I reserve the right to not use an entry for any reason. For example, if twenty people send me a photo of a Sumatra mug, and all say “this is my favorite coffee,” or one person says, “I got this mug after taking a trip to Sumatra to learn about coffee and I really appreciate this unique coffee. It’s amazing the work and labor in producing Sumatra coffee” then I’ll probably use the best of the twenty Sumatra mugs.
- It can be any two sentences. You might, for example, send a city mug and say, “I got this on my vacation to Las Vegas. I had the time of my life despite having lost tons of money gambling!”
- All entrants and winners must have a postal address within the United Stated, Canada, or the U.K.
- Please include in the email the address where you want your gift card mailed to.
- All emails must be received before January 28, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time).
- All entrants, winners, participants allow Melody to use their mug photo here on StarbucksMelody.com with the short two to five sentence explanation of why it is a favorite mug.
- All entries must include a name and location for use in the post. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a “John Q. Smith”. For example, “Amy in Boston” works just fine. You just have to have a distinctive name. For example. you can’t be just “Michael” or “Steve” because there are too many of those first names. You certainly could be “Clark K. in Washington” or “LatteRose in Washington.”
- If you have a twitter profile, please include your twitter name in the email. This is not absolutely required.
- Both partners and customers are welcome to participate.
- Please include “My Favorite Starbucks Mug Contest” in the subject line of the email.
- Only one entry per person. This means that you may submit ONE mug entry. One email, one coffee mug, one story of two to five sentences.
- First 30 entrants who fully follow the above rules will receive a $5 Starbucks Gift Card.
Assuming that I get some good participation here, this could be a lot of fun. We will have a future blog post with at least 30 Starbucks coffee mugs images and a couple of sentences to go with each one. Hopefully it will be 30 different mugs and a fun series of pictures with short stories. I can imagine we could even have a picture of a mug, and a partner say, “I love this mug. I bought it the first day I was hired!”
Please follow all of the bullet point rules above.
Since we are on the subject of coffee mugs, here are some previous blog post featuring images of Starbucks coffee mugs:
Collecting City Mugs – Episode #1
Four 1995 coffee stamp inspired mugs (Sulawesi, House Blend, Costa Rica, Guatemala)
What Christmas merchandise do you want to see this year? (Blog post features a number of images of old holiday mugs)
Collecting Starbucks Mugs From Around the World – Episode #2
Summer essentials: Gazebo Blend by Starbucks (A blog post on Gazebo Blend coffee but featuring a Gazebo Blend coffee mug image.)
One last thing, the coffee mug for the anchor image in this blog article is from Japan. It was a wonderful gift to me from @Nobrice, and was part of the Via collection of merchandise in Japan in April 2010.

Melody I love this thread and can’t wait to see all the mugs. I never was a mug collector but enjoy seeing them all. Whenever our mug collection got too big, we sort of ended up pruning it down. At some point, it would be neat to open up another discussion to perhaps your favorite things at SB besides drinks. Again, happy new year to you and to everyone in this community!
What a fun contest! Can’t wait to see mugs that I haven’t seen before!
Oh, this is going to be fun 😀
@kaori, @purple1, @coffeevanilla – Good morning! Happy 2011! Please share this post so we get lots of entries! @Coffeevanilla – I got your email already. You are the first entry. 🙂
My fav Starbucks mug doesn’t say Starbucks on it. 🙁 But that’s ok, I’ll enjoy seeing everyone elses pictures. Or, I could send in a picture of my second favourite I suppose?
Happy New Year!!!!!
I love this idea……but, will be hard to pick a favorite.
here’s a question: are we excluding anything, like Christmas/holiday mugs????
I have several different categories of favorite Sbux mugs, and sometimes have given away my very favorites.
well, I’ll be thinking about this and sending in!!!!
Happy New Year to all. (and God bless us everyone.) even tho that belongs in ‘A Christmas Carol’. can’t hurt:)
SO excited about seeing everyone’s favorites!
It looks like MyStarbucksIdea is down today. I can’t log in. Anyone else having a problem?
@Michelle – Was your favorite mug made by Starbucks? Starbucks has made a number of mugs that don’t say Starbucks anywhere but the bottom of the mug.
Yes Melody cannot get onto to MSI either. They have been having so many issues of late. Does that say something about the status of it? Re the mugs-as people post their pics would love to see (if possible) a date of purchase to see how the collection of mugs have changed over the years. Color, design, size, etc.
@purple1 – That is a great point that I didn’t think of when I started this! I just now edited the blog post to include about the year of purchase. The contest is still so new that perhaps I’ll get emails which include that information. I’m already receiving several emails. More people lurk than comment. 😉
Oh this will be wonderful!
My favorite SB mug is packed in a box about 2500 miles away… let me see about an alternate.
Happy New Year Melody & everyone!
Good chilly morning all you people on my favorite blog and happy new yeaar. My favorite Starbucks mug is the one they gave me at one of their annual meetings and I will use it this morning with Godiva hot chocolate. My second most favorite is tha green tumbler that they sent me in the mail and I used it yesterday for the via you sent me.
This is so exciting!!! I’m on my 10 minute break right now at sbux, but when get home I’ll email in my entry!!!
well my favorite starbucks mug is at work but I will send you a pic of the traveling mug that goes everywhere with me 🙂
My most used had been replaced once, i broke the old one – it’s the plastic double walled, i’ll send a picture – it’s what i get my chai in every morning
my favorite is i think a mug i don’t use often, weird eh? i picked it up at 1st and pike in seattle and it has the old siren and i don’t want to use it and break it so i only use it sometimes…and the rest of the time i like to stare at it 🙂 makes me remember seattle
I guess I am disqualified from the contest because even though I have a camera I don’t know ho to e-mail photos. Bummer! Stay warm.
It might have been a little foolish of me to think that it will take one month to get 30 emails. Hmmm. I’m at 9 now, though of course it will slow down as this blog entry gets buried when fresh content is posted.
Must it absolutely be a mug? I have several very neat tumblers that would probably work far better..
Elly, I hadn’t thought about that when I wrote up the contest. Already I am getting a few tumbler photos. I wasn’t sure what to do about that.(And I’ve already received two of the same City mug). Since I wasn’t clear, I think the ambiguity should be resolved in favor of the entrant. 😉 Spoken like a true lawyer there. LOL. Send in your tumbler photo.
By the way, one of my all time favorite mugs/tumblers it the very old Christmas tumbler (there is a link to the holiday mugs in this blog post).
http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2010/06/30/what-christmas-merchandise-do-you-want-to-see-at-starbucks-open-thread/
^ I really used that 1996 Christmas tumbler a lot, for probably a decade. (I purchased it at the Northgate Starbucks on Northgate way – Not the drive thru but the older store). In the 2000s it became a little harder to find tall sized Starbucks tumblers, and that little Christmas tumbler was my mainstay tumbler for like literally 10 plus years. Loved the colors, and the creativity, and the lid wasn’t designed with rubber that wears out, and it was a tall size. I still love it.
those little tumblers are very cool for those days i just don’t want a ton. i think we have two 12oz tumblers around, one from that ssc event you and i went to (therefore, it was a gift from you!). the other looks exactly like a 16oz tumbler until you put it next to its friends in the cabinet, and the baristas nearly always try to charge it like a 16oz cup.
entry is sent, hopefully you will find it entertaining and educational 🙂
holy moly! (as you woud say Melody) Including tumblers puts this into a whole other ballgame!!!!! But, luckily I really have given away my very most favorite tumblers so I have already restricted myself.
What about holidays? I assume you are saying yes to holiday mugs, then? or….what?
Denise, I love the idea of including holiday mugs! Starbucks has done soooo many beautiful mugs over the years. I wanted to feature mugs over tumblers, but I don’t think I can say “no” to tumblers. I might have to do a second contest much later just for tumblers. Happy New Year Denise!
Looking forward to the contest! I really do like seeing all the different mugs.
Happy New Year everyone!
🙂
I am starting to collect starbucks mugs. I’ve been very selective only buying those that I’m drawn to. I used to collect mugs staring back around 2005 but when I moved to Washington I got rid of almost all of them except two of them. It started off with tumblers then moved to mugs. I have a varied collection of tumblers and now I’ve drifted to the mugs. There are SO many in the last two years especially that I’ve really wanted to get. Our household uses mugs quite a bit so I’ve decided to slowly build up our stock of mugs with starbucks themed ones. I’m really looking forward to seeing your future post on the mugs!!! *HEE!* I hope you get a fantastic selection. I KNOW there are a lot out there that I haven’t even seen yet. Can’t WAIT!
My entry is sent! There are so many wonderful SBUX mugs – I recently started collecting the city ones myself. Can’t wait to see the results of this contest! @musicgirljen
Jenni and darkkatpouncing and everyone – Got your entries! So far I’ve got about 12 qualified entries, and another 4 or 5 that don’t quite qualify. There are already two sets of duplicate mugs! People like the same mugs over and over again. LOL. So far, no mugs from the 1990s era of Starbucks yet.
I like the idea of doing a separate tumbler contest one day down the road. I have already submitted my mug, but I have some really awesome and old Starbucks tumblers. =) One is from 2001 and most of the rest are from 2007 and 2009. If I really dug around I think I could find some older ones that my parents bought in the 90s.
Great idea for a post! I’m excited to see the entries and all the different mugs. I have 2 favorites at the moment, so it was really hard to pick. 🙂 Happy New Year everyone!
I hope I see some Vancouver mugs here! You’d think with the 2010 Winter Olympics they’d be more popular, but I haven’t seen people buying more of them lately. I haven’t really seen many city mugs but my favourite part of them has to be how they show the stats (For example a Vancouver mug shows the average annual rainfall).
Great idea, and I love it includes UK entrants !!!! Now I need to not only pick my favorite but one that you wont have had hundreds of times also, hmmmmm ?
Also, how do you get a pic in the box on the right ?
I think another “tumbler only” contest would be in order, too! e-you today. 🙂
To everyone: Get in your mug submissions! I don’t think it’s going to take me to the end of the month to collect more than 30 mug pics, so I might close this a little early. Send me a pic of your favorite mug and follow the above instructions! Open to the US, Canada, and the UK.
OK Melody, I want to see a blog post about everybody’s favorite Starbucks CARD! 😀 That would be sweet!
@GaStarbucksGirl – That is the BEST idea ever. Wish I had done that almost instead of this! *eeek* Maybe in another month or so (I can’t afford to do these contest too often) I will do the same kind of thing but everyone has to send in an imagine of their favorite card. 🙂
I will definitely participate in the Starbucks card contest (if partners are eligible that is!). I have a decent collection of the cards :-). Can’t wait!!
@Stsai01 – Yes of course you can participate! The more the merrier! To be honest, when people are commenting on this blog, I usually have no way of knowing who is a partner and who is not. Every contest is open to both! 🙂
Here’s my favorite mug — I got it right after I became a Coffee Master. http://instagr.am/p/2K4d/
This is such a cool contest. My favorite Starbucks mug has the old “Siren.” Happy New Year!
This is a very fun idea! I had a tough time choosing between two different mugs. I ended up choosing my “every day” mug over my “sentimental” mug. I’d be satisfied with either choice as they both bring the Starbucks Experience into my home, it was just tough having to “choose.”
Thanks for a fun start to 2011! What a GREAT year this is going to be!
After reading this I started scrolling down to leave a comment on here suggesting that you have people send in pictures of their starbucks cards, and then I saw GAStarbucksGirl already did. Great idea.
@Dottie – Welcome! Thanks for sending in your mug! I got it. @GaStarbucksGirl – Everyone likes your idea of the next blog contest being your favorite Starbucks card! Maybe we’ll do that contest in February?
@Tobias – Welcome to the blog! Thanks for sending in your mug! I’m not even up to 30 emails to me yet, and a number of the emails I’ve received don’t have addresses. A number of people just want to share their mugs but don’t care about the gift card. I loved what you wrote in your email.
Poke around some more here. 😉
Melody
Melody:
This was a great idea to get everyone to share a picture and a story about their favorite mug. Contest or no contest, I would have submitted my ratty, old tumbler. I am excited to see everyone’s!!!
A Starbucks card blog would be way too much fun to see and a glimpse of people’s creative minds.
Thank you, Melody. And thank you also for your comment on my MSI farewell- Cecile closed the thread before I could reply saying that I appreciate your regard.
Basically, the one thing that finally tipped me over the edge about MSI is that COFFEEIS still has not been banned, despite several abuse reports by JavaChicky and myself, and probably several others. If Cecile and the rest of the moderating team wants to sanction him as a legitimate voice to be heard and heeded in the matters that are debated there about how best to improve the Starbucks experience, then myStarbucksidea has completely lost its purpose and worth. So long as that site remains a kangaroo court overrun by the likes of COFFEEIS, cupofjoe4evamoe, TK_oss, Ball’n’Chain, and others of their like, productivity cannot be had amongst its pages.
So until and unless Starbucks cracks the whip down on the ill-intentioned rabble, then even those of us with valuable motives and worthwhile opinions cannot accomplish the tasks for which the site was established in the first place. And from what I’ve seen recently, Cecile seems to lean more toward the support and approval of COFFEEIS’ behaviour rather than the opposite. So if the likes of that is who they desire to represent their name, I will bow out gracefully and relinquish my seat in their congress. I have been beginning to feel less and less wanted there by the moderators, they will sooner attack me and defend the derelict barbarians.
I thought I was offering much-needed solution by requesting account verification before a screenname be allowed to vote, comment and/or submit- I was even willing to write the HTML codes from scratch myself that would be needed to implement some sort of barrier against the banished, but more and more they’re seeming to view me as the villian who needs to be constrained and them as the brainchild to be loved.
So that’s why I finally laid down my guns, as much as I dearly love Starbucks, and as much as I loved the camaraderie we once had there, those days are gone and a new regime is taking root, one that is in direct opposition to every fibre of my being.
Hapy New Year Mel!
Thank you for this contest!! I just sent my submission via email and will keep my fingers crossed…
@Leslee – I got your coffee mug. Love what you wrote for your submission! This really is going to be fun when I get all the pics together (I can see what I will be working on soon) though I’m still not up to 30 possible entries (a number of people sent in pics with no addresses for a prize)
@Tobias – Your thread definitely did get shut down fast. I’m not sure I want to open up too much of a can of worms here, but I like your description of MSI as a “kangaroo court.” Something happened. I really hate naming names of individuals here who sort of caused the slippery slope downhill slide the MSI is on. But the dynamics of MSI have changed a lot. It’s really odd because I’ve tried reaching out to the moderators, and essentially I feel like I am the one who isn’t in step with the new MSI when I emailed moderators. I fear that I will be next banned if I continued to criticisize what is happening at MSI. I sent a few emails, and eventually realized that they have the MSI that they want. If they wanted a different kind of place, they could make it happen. They have resources. We’re just the customers.
Cecile shut down your thread too fast. If it had been left open, that would have been a good place to have a dialogue about whether MSI is still a vibrant community.
I too noticed Tobias was missing but I had no idea that he was shut down or banned. I thought his comments were very good and I enjoyed reading them. Is that what happened to Java Chicky? I think the same person wanted me banned too for whatever reason I will never know. I didn’t think her posts were bad at all. I have reported a few but they used vulgar and foul language and quite offensive, I like his description of “kangaroo court” but I think “cyber space’s garbage can” sums it up best by people that will remain nameless but we all know who they are that make meaningless and nonsense comments.
Not to repeat and go on about the downhill of MSI but I just want to concur it is a shame and agree with all the comments said re this site. SB you need to review your goals for MSI.
I agree with Tobias and everyone else about what’s happening with MSI……and I just hate that it’s happening!
I CANNOT for the life of me understand why “COFFEEIS” is still on there, let alone taken so seriously that he’s #1 on the “leadrerboard”…….or anywhere at all. every time I open my inbox, there’s another piece of non-sense comment from CFIS.
I like Cecile, but I can’t undersatnd what’s being allowed to happen. I can’t.
