Starbucks is introducing a 31-ounce “Trenta” cold drink size on January 18, 2011, in numerous states, with a nationwide launch planned in May of this year. This new, larger, drink size will be available only for iced coffee or iced tea beverages. It is not a Frappuccino size!
Let me provide a little background and a few facts:
Summer 2008:
Starbucks has long been interested in introducing a larger cup size to their cold drink lineup. It is clear that there is a demand for very large iced tea beverages. In fact, in the summer of 2008, Starbucks tested briefly in Washington State a “double grande” size cold cup with the word “Tazo” on it. The “double grande” cup was 32 ounces and strictly for iced tea or an iced tea lemonade drink only. Note that you couldn’t even get an iced coffee in the “Double Grande” cup. That was a short lived test. Here is the link to my prior blog post on the “Double Grande” size cup:
January 2010:
Again, Starbucks began testing a larger cup size in early 2010. This time the cup size was called the “Trenta” and was 31 ounces. The test was primarily in Arizona. In February 2010, I blogged about this:
September/ Fall 2010:
By the Fall of 2010, the Trenta cup test was expanding. Many parts of Georgia now had the Trenta cup, and in addition Georgia Starbucks stores tested a “Classic” iced black tea beverage. As I write this, most Starbucks use the Tazo brand “Awake” black tea for their iced black tea beverages. This is a delicious black tea and I love it! It has a hint of citrus flavor to it making it not quite a classic tea but very delicious. The “Classic” tea tested in Georgia did not have the citrus flavor to it, and therefore was more of a plain tea. Here is my blog post on that test:

Current launch of the Trenta cup:
Starbucks has announced that 14 states will offer the new Trenta cup size on Tuesday the 18th of January, and that by May 3, 2011, all Starbucks stores will offer this new size. The Trenta cup size is for iced coffee or iced tea drinks only (I realize I said that already, but it is important).
Here is the Reuter’s news segment on the Trenta:
And now for the gossip and speculation:
I don’t know exactly which 14 states will get the Trenta on January 18th. I’ve heard that most of the South will have it by Tuesday. One friend of mine told me that California launches the Trenta on February 1, 2011, but again, this is unconfirmed rumor. I have also heard rumor that the Tazo Awake Tea will be replaced by the “plain” black tea as the standard iced tea offering. Don’t quote me on that because I could be wrong! I have frequently heard it said that when stores switch to the Trenta size cup the standard drink recipe will go from sweetened to unsweetened. This means that you will now have to ask your barista to have your tea sweetened with classic rather than that happening automatically. Again, I could be wrong!
I would love to know what you think of the new drink size! Have you tried it? I know that I probably could really drink a Trenta passion tea in the summer. Let me know what you think, please!
Edit:
In the comments, it has been confirmed that all stores offering the Trenta size will be switching from “Awake” black tea to the “Classic” black tea.
In 2008, Starbucks briefly sold a 32-ounce old Siren logo cold cup. I need to make it very clear that this was only briefly available and was a partner-only product. This was never on the shelves at your local Starbucks. I just realized that the Trenta cup lid fits it! I think that is kind of cool! I bought the 2008 novelty cup at the partner store, and a partner sent me Trenta cup and lids in February 2010 which is how I have all those items. Again, my apologies for the off topic edit. Now back to your Trenta conversation.

In May do you know if it is launching internationally as well or just in the US?
I’m not a big tea drinker, but I do enjoy a black tea or black tea lemonade from time to time. I’ll be interested in trying out the new Black Iced Tea that is coming along with the Trenta launch. My biggest concern with this launch is having to store another set of cups and lids in our extremely small store.
I bet lots of customers would love iced teas in Trenta size there really IS so much ice in there!! Lol, my question though, would it fit in car cupholders? 😛
And I don’t think Canada will get this, usually when people want more iced tea they just ask for easy ice or get an iced tea refill (No refills for iced tea lemonades).
Sometimes we have people come in and get a NO ICE iced tea. Damn, that’s like half the 2L pitcher if they requested a Trenta of that.
As you know, I am super, super excited about this! Yes, it will be an adjustment. But I think that it’s worth it for a product that a majority of people will be able to make use of. At the same time, I would like to go on record as saying that I would like to see Trenta restricted to iced teas and coffee. I can’t imagine what the calorie count of a Trenta sized frappuccino would be….
Yum! I had a Trenta sized iced coffee in Farmington, Connecticut this August. It did fit in my cupholder, if I remember correctly.
I can confirm the awake tea going to classic black tea. Sad sad day!
I could definitely go for a Trenta-sized iced coffee in the summer!
They did it! I wasn’t sure if they were going to go ahead and release it or not. I still have that test trenta cup you gave me. When clearing out stuff for give away I just couldn’t bring myself to toss it. I’m thinking of filling it with something and use it as a decoration piece 🙂 I’m actually looking forward to the uber sized cold drink cup. There are times that I do want something that big lol Iced latte Gigantus sounds good right about now 😀 I was skimming through twitter and saw your tweet on this article and it made me hop in my seat…now if I can just find one of those limited edition partner released brown logo cold cups lol (I’m bad I know! I just can’t stop the mug, cup, tumbler love I have!)
Hmmmm I need to find a Starbucks in my town. I can’t have a car on campus for my first year at college and haven’t been able to explore the town too much, so I actually have no idea where the closest one is…but I really need to find one of these. Thanks for the post!
I can’t wait for a 31oz cup full of Iced Coffee goodness! <3
The trenta is very popular at my store but then again tomorrow’s high is 78. I personally don’t get them as the ice dilutes the drink before I can drink it. I can see it being popular in the summer and in the warmer states like Arizona.
As u said to me on twitter, it might be a tough sell overseas, especially in asia considering asian petite body. A lot o customers even find I hard to finished up their grande size drinks. However some ppl did ask for a bigger size than venti, I feel sorry whenever I hv to disappoint them n said tht venti is the biggest we got:( Most of these customers are wifi users that hang out our store for hours, they would be happy if we have this trenta size. Besides, trenta size will be available for ice tea n ice coffee right? I bet in this tropical country (I live in indonesia) a lot of people would love to enjoy their ice tea or ice shaken lemonade in trenta size in a hot sunny day (its always hot here, we can always use more ice in our drinks!) I personally would loooove to have a trenta size of ice raspberry passion tea.. Extra ice of course:)
@Marshawenur – I often think of the climate and how it relates to this size. Sorry I didn’t think about Indonesia, and you make a good point about the tropical climate. I was thinking of places like the UK which can be quite gray and rainy like Seattle at times. The Trenta arrives last in the Pacific Northwest I think! And it was tested in Arizona which is so hot! But maybe Indonesia should be the next launch of the Trenta after the US. 😉
@Diele – Summer in Seattle is 78 degrees. I would die in your state, and yes, I’d be buying a Trenta.
@Diele – Oh and I’m much more sad to be losing Awake tea than worrying about a new size. I like Awake Black Tea with Orange Mango juice!
o_O”
A drink this size is sure to freak out the French…
If any drink that size is sweetened, I would not like to fathom how many grams of sugar it will contain!!! Eek!
Hey! The South, huh? That’s me! I will have to drop by my Starbucks and see if they’ve got the Trenta! If so, I think I’ll get one. 🙂 I can definitely see this selling, especially during the summer in the South. When it gets hot down here, it doesn’t mess around! A Trenta iced passion tea lemonade sure would hit the spot…
Summer in Seattle sounds like HEAVEN to me!
Out of curiosity, how many pumps of classic go into a Trenta Tea?
I’m pretty sure this is currently available in most Boston stores already. I will really take advantage of it in the summer. Living in Boston, there are so many Dunkin Donuts commercials and I’m thinking they are going to have to change their commercials and some billboards as they claim to have the largest ice coffee.
I truly have mixed feelings about the trenta size. I drink alot of unsweetened green ice tea light ice no water no shaking but I am not sure I would get that huge size. I often sit and relax and get the free refills. What will the price be for this size? And I assume you can get a free refill? BTW I drink iced green tea all year even in the winter.
I think this sounds great. You know people will love it! I know at my store even if the rule is to only use it for ice coffee and tea people will ask for venti’s in a grande size with extra everything… so why JUST ice tea and ice coffee?
I think what Starbucks is trying to do is avoid allowing people to get the drinks with lattes, frapps, iced lattes, etc because 1. it would have a lot of espresso in it and 2. the calories- the last thing Starbucks needs is to get drinks that are 1000 calories and I’m thinking that with some of the frapps and mochas, it might be way too many calories and that would be bad for the PR of Starbucks.
Just my two sense….
Amy in Boston agree re the calorie count and the nightmare SB would have re this. BTW what stores in Boston did you say the Trenta cup were in? Does that include Cambridge or just Boston?
I haven’t actually had it but noticed recently that the Starbucks on State Street and Newbury Street (near Hynes) had them. I’m sure they are in a lot more but those I definitely saw the cups hanging up. I’m not sure about Cambridge, just because I don’t usually drink Starbucks in Cambridge. I live in Brighton/Brookline. Most of the time I’m at Starbucks, I go to the one on Stuart Street/Dartmouth.
@AmyinBoston @purple1 and @Nick –
Amy and Purple1, thank you for jumping in with a perfect answer to Nick. Amy you’re so right that Starbucks is really trying to control the PR backlash from this which would be far worse if a person could get a Frappuccino in a Trenta cup.
Nick, have you ever seen the movie Super Size Me? I think you can even watch it on YouTube. GREAT movie. The movie probably did a huge amount of damage to McDonald’s image, and I think they were forced to try and pull back from the “super size” push all because of that movie. I’m not even sure what is in a McDonald’s since I haven’t stepped inside of one in about a decade or more.
And in any event, there will be places where almost no one tries to order a Frappuccino in a Trenta. That would be unlikely in my local stores downtown. A barista at one of the stores I work at told me that she came to downtown Seattle from an out of state Starbucks. She said at her old store they went through about 30 whip cream canisters a day, and now it was like 9 or 10 in her store. The Frappuccino just is not as popular here as in warm weather places.
The other thing is having heard Starbucks people talking about the “guardrails” of the company this is probably another guard rail by limiting what can be offered in a Trenta. Can you imagine how hideous it would be with a domed lid on a Trenta. What a mess to have stores have Trenta domed lids. I’m sure there are people in the SSC who remember when Venti was a brand new size and what that was like to add that size. I remember being mortified when short dropped off the menu and Venti was added There is nothing that resembles any European coffee beverage in a Venti size,
Last but not least, a small part of me thinks that Starbucks should NOT launch the Trenta size at 1912 Pike Place. Just in the interest of keeping that store as authentic as possible, I don’t think they should give 1912 Pike Place the Trenta. The authenticity of that store is part of the tourist draw. Now if only they would give 1912 Pike Place its whole bean menu back, 🙁
Melody I so agree with you that the addition of the trenta size to the 1912 pike place store would be a big mistake and the charm of that store would be lost. I loved going into that store and knowing its history. I also so remember the movie Super Size Me and thinking about it I can’t figure out why SB wants to add the trenta size. With the availability of free refills, what is the point of offering the trenta size? I realize not everyone stays in the store and in the summer that size might be nice, but overall I think it in the endit would be more of a problem. Has there really been such a request from the customer for this size or is SB just trying to compete with other companies that offer this size?
@ChrisW – Oh you bring up a good point! Storage! I also wonder why the small kiosk type Starbucks will store the Trenta cup. They’ll make it work somehow!
How cool!!
But too bad that it’s not for Frappuccinos…:(
Melody, my family is from England so I know all about the smoking hot highs of 78 in the winter. Iced tea is not generally very popular in England to begin with. My nanny and aunties always said it was improper, but I always tell them try drinking hot earl grey when it is 115 degrees!
I am very angry about awake, but I will be trying a custom awake tea with steeping the full leaf bags and then making it iced. I currently do that with vanilla roobios and china green tips.
Salamander, currently 8 pumps of classic is standard(160 calories from just the classic syrup).
purple1, I believe the price is right around $3 for the plain iced teas. I tend to be on bar so I have not re-memorized the prices with the recent price changes.
Everyone asks for trenta frappuccinos or caramel macchiatos when it first launches. Or even trenta waters. This is the one case where we are allowed to null and void the just say yes policy without ethics playing a part. =)
I meant the summer. I seem to need a cup of Verona before posting!
What would a Trenta Frap cost if they started making them? People are already complaining about the costs of all the drinks. I personally think Super Sizing and Starbucks makes for a bad couple. It is just my opinion, and I’m sure many would disagree, but I sure hope they don’t go the Trenta Route with all the other Specialty Drinks – especially Fraps!
I was told by the manager of my main store that they would absoutely have no space for these…they’re squeezed in as it is. We’ll see. ;(
Trenta was quietly launched as a test in the New England Regions. It is very popular still because Trenta cups are sent from the York Roasting Plant.
My store is over 12 years old and we made room, so I would think any store can find room!
They’d be like $6-7. Wow! I hope I never see the day!
Yay! I hope Ohio is one of the 14 states!
My wife is thrilled the Trenta may be coming soon. hopefully NJ is one of the first 14…. I only wish I could get a latte in Trenta size, the Venti cups are too small
At first I thought the Trenta cup would never make it to Starbucks Japan…but since they’re trying to expand through new stores in parks and regional drive-thru stores, the Trenta cup may be really popular. Especially since I’ve never heard of free refills at the Starbucks here. But I guess that’s IF they ever release the Trenta cup internationally 🙂
Can’t imagine lugging around a 31 ounce beverage! I guess I better do some work on my upper body strength for this coming summer.
@Diele: well, as of today, they haven’t heard anything about it at my place in Chicago. And, they are very short on space. But, like any job, I suppose if you’re forced into something, you make do!
Most of the ‘cold’ drinks you see here in the winter are frapps. And this store I go to is not a “HUGE” frapp-seller. Otherwise, I don’t notice too many cold drinks this time of yr.
There is soooo much VIA product at the store I go to. All they would have to do is remove a fraction of it and they would have plenty of free space for these cups.
Speaking of VIA!!! This store I frequent is a top seller for VIA in the area. So much so (as I have mentioned previously at msi) that they are assaulting the customers again to buy it from the minute they walk in the door until they leave. I would warmly welcome these Trenta sized cups, as a replacement for some of the space reserved for all that VIA product.
My store has been the top selling in the area because we are knowledgeable and sample. I would talk with the district manager if they are assaulting customers as that is unacceptable! It is a part of our jobs but is not the only thing we offer. Plenty of lovely whole bean to educate their customers about.
Does anybody know what the standard number of pumps for a Trenta is? 6p for Venti…8p for Trenta?
@SuzanneC – I laughed outloud at your comment!
@Stsai01 – I think I’ve read 8 pumps too. YOUR arms are going to get a work out. 🙁
It is 8 pumps but I believe I saw the classic black tea will be 7.
@ Diele I know they are only doing their job! I think the DM is the real problem for the hard sell, so talking to him would be useless. Actually – I think they do this to drive me crazy with the VIA deliberately, because I have befriended them, so they get a kick out of my reaction! But I can see they really get on other peoples nerves.
Sounds like a great idea for summer road trip, especially in the West. Has anyone heard what the price would be yet?
Tomorrow is the day for my store! I’m really excited about this; for the past few days I’ve been letting people ordering Venti iced teas/lemonades and iced coffees know about the new size coming. It’s really not so bad- 1 pump more syrup, $.50 more (on average) pricing. More product, which is awesome!
The biggest challenge will be saying “no” to espresso beverages, frappuccinos, and waters in the new size. But, Starbucks is not considering that option right now, and I’m very grateful to them for that. Just getting used to teas and coffees will be a challenge, and quite frankly, if you need a Trenta sized frappuccino, you are also going to need a personal trainer in short order. 😉
I can’t wait to see how our tea/coffee sales change too…it’s an exciting time to work for Starbucks!
drinking a trenta right now, set them all out for tommorow. The tea lemon-aid has like 56 gr of sugar yikes! btw they get 7 pumps of classic and you can barely shake it in the shaker
The recipe used to be 8. Not sure why the change with the national launch.
Do you remember that? I watched the cup in your office May last year.
I want to try that, order to “Trenta Passion Tea”. Haha.
Also, each car brand have to redesign the cup holder ASAP.
GM, Acura, Honda, Toyota, etc.
