Starbucks is introducing a 31-ounce “Trenta” cold drink size on January 18, 2011, in numerous states, with a nationwide launch planned in May of this year. This new, larger, drink size will be available only for iced coffee or iced tea beverages. It is not a Frappuccino size!
Let me provide a little background and a few facts:
Summer 2008:
Starbucks has long been interested in introducing a larger cup size to their cold drink lineup. It is clear that there is a demand for very large iced tea beverages. In fact, in the summer of 2008, Starbucks tested briefly in Washington State a “double grande” size cold cup with the word “Tazo” on it. The “double grande” cup was 32 ounces and strictly for iced tea or an iced tea lemonade drink only. Note that you couldn’t even get an iced coffee in the “Double Grande” cup. That was a short lived test. Here is the link to my prior blog post on the “Double Grande” size cup:
January 2010:
Again, Starbucks began testing a larger cup size in early 2010. This time the cup size was called the “Trenta” and was 31 ounces. The test was primarily in Arizona. In February 2010, I blogged about this:
September/ Fall 2010:
By the Fall of 2010, the Trenta cup test was expanding. Many parts of Georgia now had the Trenta cup, and in addition Georgia Starbucks stores tested a “Classic” iced black tea beverage. As I write this, most Starbucks use the Tazo brand “Awake” black tea for their iced black tea beverages. This is a delicious black tea and I love it! It has a hint of citrus flavor to it making it not quite a classic tea but very delicious. The “Classic” tea tested in Georgia did not have the citrus flavor to it, and therefore was more of a plain tea. Here is my blog post on that test:

Current launch of the Trenta cup:
Starbucks has announced that 14 states will offer the new Trenta cup size on Tuesday the 18th of January, and that by May 3, 2011, all Starbucks stores will offer this new size. The Trenta cup size is for iced coffee or iced tea drinks only (I realize I said that already, but it is important).
Here is the Reuter’s news segment on the Trenta:
And now for the gossip and speculation:
I don’t know exactly which 14 states will get the Trenta on January 18th. I’ve heard that most of the South will have it by Tuesday. One friend of mine told me that California launches the Trenta on February 1, 2011, but again, this is unconfirmed rumor. I have also heard rumor that the Tazo Awake Tea will be replaced by the “plain” black tea as the standard iced tea offering. Don’t quote me on that because I could be wrong! I have frequently heard it said that when stores switch to the Trenta size cup the standard drink recipe will go from sweetened to unsweetened. This means that you will now have to ask your barista to have your tea sweetened with classic rather than that happening automatically. Again, I could be wrong!
I would love to know what you think of the new drink size! Have you tried it? I know that I probably could really drink a Trenta passion tea in the summer. Let me know what you think, please!
Edit:
In the comments, it has been confirmed that all stores offering the Trenta size will be switching from “Awake” black tea to the “Classic” black tea.
In 2008, Starbucks briefly sold a 32-ounce old Siren logo cold cup. I need to make it very clear that this was only briefly available and was a partner-only product. This was never on the shelves at your local Starbucks. I just realized that the Trenta cup lid fits it! I think that is kind of cool! I bought the 2008 novelty cup at the partner store, and a partner sent me Trenta cup and lids in February 2010 which is how I have all those items. Again, my apologies for the off topic edit. Now back to your Trenta conversation.

Hi Mel,
Bit off topic but just wondering lately. How come some people on here have pictures in their posts? I we sign up to the site or something to create a profile?
@MarkDavid -Not a prob! If you want a profile pic, go subscribe to http://www.gravatar.com (free) and then it links your profile pic to your email address. You should have your profile image avatar show up if you are consistently using the same email address to make your comments here.
No Trenta here in NJ until May. Went to SB this am and mixed reactions to its availability. Will be interesting to see how it is accepted once it is introduced.
Here are the states who launched today: AL, AZ, FL, GA, HI, LA, MS, NC, NV, OK, SC, NM, and VA.
Feb. 1st California launches.
Hi Diele, Thank you for the info! I would’ve thought TX would be in the first group, and I’d thought I heard chatter the stores are already getting the cups in. Maybe TX launches 2-1-11 with the California launch. Any TX baristas know?
That was from the action idea from the store portal a week ago, so I am unsure. A ton of conversation about the trenta today. It has been a hit at my store. 20-30 sold daily even in our winter! My manager mentioned that she heard all stores would have been by the end of the month so maybe they decided to move up the launch and received email confirmation.
I think this whole exercise is silly. When will I see the first smooshed Trenta cup in the parking lot or on the side of the road.
And think of how many more ounces of SBUX you will have to consume to earn that 15th star if you are consumed by the Trenta!
Oceans will be greatly affected too.
Can’t wait for it to hit WA!! I love my unsweetened black tea and would love a bigger cup!! Now if I could just get my mocha that big…;)
@Sarah – I can’t quite imagine a Trenta Mocha, but in the summer, yes, I really will be able to drink a Trenta passion tea! What I want is Vanilla Rooibos to launch too as a tea option! Looking forward the Trenta to hit Seattle too!
I’m all in favor of the larger size with a relatively modest price difference. I have no doubts my tea drinking beloved wife will be having me get her a Trenta come rollout in California.
I haven’t had tea since I left the Southland in 1967. I will give it a go for an iced coffee, however.
I prefer my Starbucks fix hot and would love this size for my mocha in the morning. I’m glad I came across this blog. In the areas of my interest that have blogs (Single malts,, fine cigars and Starbucks) I’m finding this one the most informative.
I have mixed reactions in general to the Trenta size, but I’m very happy that Starbucks will not be making Trenta-sized iced lattes and Frappaccinos. Frappaccinos are already calorie-and-sugar bombs – Having an even larger sized version would be insane. IMHO, anyway. Hopefully Starbucks sticks to Trenta iced coffees and teas only.
I buy short and tall sized drinks so this new cup size doesn’t really impact me. IF Starbucks were to ever offer beverages other than iced tea and iced coffee in the Trenta, I would hope that they would recalibrate their shot count across their product line. The fact that a Venti and a Grande latte have the same shot count has always been puzzling to me (and often somewhat comical when people claim they need the Venti because they need a bigger caffeine fix).
Finally, did anyone see the Good Magazine commentary on the new size? I thought Starbucks and Good were “partners”… http://shr.gd/hCusOk
I really want a Big Gulp HOT coffee cup. Could make that last all morning. But the same goes for cold drinks, especially on long drives or busy mornings. I’m looking forward to giving it a try locally.
@CD For hot drinks, short and tall refer to the amount of milk added to one shot of espresso. So the customer gets to decide if they want it stronger (short), or not (tall). The same goes with the Grande and Venti, as it allows a customer to decide how strong they want their beverage. Plus, Iced Venti drinks have 3 shots of espresso, as they are actually 24 oz vs. 20 oz for a Venti hot beverage.
@Chris W. Wow. I have never heard it explained that way before – and not only does it make sense, it “feels” like a very civilized/Starbucks explanation. I like it!
Back in the day of Mocha Valencias, I did like that you got the extra shot (hot Venti got 3) because of all of the syrup in the recipe. That seems like eons ago. My espresso drinks are now always double shorts.
So THANKS @Chris W – you knocked a chip off my shoulder with that explanation!
Gotta admit, i love the trenta. So weird to be serving such a large size, but I love my Trenta no classic shaken green teas.
How is it selling at your store Cam? Have you switched from Awake to Classic Tea? I can’t wait to order a Trenta Passion Tea!
@CD no problem on the explanation. With the advent of Frappuccinos and other flavored beverages, the coffee definitely seems to get lost in the recipe. I’m with you, when I do drink something other than brewed coffee, I drink a Quad Grande, which is exactly proportional to your preferred double short. Glad to see someone who loves the coffee flavor as much as I!
Went in to my local store excited to get a trenta iced chai, but they could not make it! I mostly wanted to get it for the novelty, but I only have it once a week at most, so I can handle the extra calories. Anyone know why they’re not allowing trenta lattes, or know any stores in Arizona that will make one for me anyway?
There is no recipe for a trenta chai tea latte and against company policy to make it. Sorry.
@Melody I whip through a Venti in the morning so fast! I recently changed to a grande w/ extra shot though…feel like I need 2 extra!:)
The Trenta size arrived here in the Austin Texas area on the 18th, yet it was just today I was able to get a Trenta caramel macchiato…. Oh boy, this is a LOT of milk. 🙂
@Jim S – Welcome to the blog! So tell us a little more! How did you persuade a Starbucks to make you a trenta caramel macchiatto, and how many shots of espresso does that have? Were you able to finish it? That’s sounds like a bit much – Though I’ve considered (and I’m embarrassed to say this) that I might be able to drink a Trenta Iced Chai!
Please poke around the blog, and I hope you will “like” the Facebook page. Welcome again!
~Melody

Thanks for the warm welcome.
I just rolled into my usual local spot that received their cups late and (Barista name is mum since this allegedly is a big no-no) ordered a Trenta 5 shot caramel macchiato like it was a menu item. My fave barista gave me the “of course you would” look, then tackled the beast. I did indeed finish it, probably took about 15 minutes to guzzle (I’m typically done with my venti before my fiancé is half down with a tall, I drink fast…sooooooooo?!?!) then another hour of asking myself why 😉
