Let’s take a trip together to the city of Kyoto in Japan: There are 18 Starbucks in Kyoto. And they have their own Starbucks card! I think it is kind of cool that in the Japan Starbucks market it is not that uncommon for there to be city cards. I sometimes wonder if that would work here in the United States. A Las Vegas card? Starbucks has tried out a San Francisco card before which was available just this past year. I don’t know if there is really the demand to make it work in many cities. I do know that people periodically come to MyStarbucksIdea.com to request this very thing:
And now back to the topic of Starbucks in Kyoto: As mentioned before, there are quite a few Starbucks in the city of Kyoto. A loyal reader, Noboru Sakamoto, shared some photos he took of a variety of the stores in Japan, one of which is a licensed location similar to a Barnes & Noble Starbucks. The Starbucks “Tsutaya Kyoto Research Park Store” is the Barnes & Noble-like store. Notice that the photos are fairly recent given that the marketing signage are Christmas 2010 signs.
*****Starbucks Kyoto Karasuma Rokkaku store:
*****Starbucks Tsutaya Kyoto Research Park Store:
This is the store that is like a Barnes & Noble store, and operates as a licensed Starbucks business within a bookstore. This might be a little confusing because just a few weeks ago I wrote a blog article that Starbucks has opened up a second Leed-Registered store in Japan in Kyoto Research Park, but this is not that store. This bookstore Starbucks is totally different. If you want to go back and read about the Leed-Registered Starbucks in Japan Kyoto Research Park, click here.
*****Kyoto Tower Starbucks
The Kyoto Tower is a tall observation building with a Starbucks at the base of it. (Someone correct me if I have that wrong). Its construction was completed in 1964, and still today remains the tallest building in the city of Kyoto. There is even a Foursquare check-in venue for this Starbucks: Foursquare venue – Kyoto Tower Starbucks. Here are a couple of photos of the exterior of this Starbucks store:
Here is what the Kyoto Tower looks like and the view from it (the view is stunning!):
Here’s the wikipedia entry on the Kyoto Tower: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Tower
*****Sanjo Ohashi Starbucks:
We’re not quite done touring the city of Kyoto together. Our next stop is Sanjo Ohashi. This store is near the Kamo River, and has a lovely river view from inside the store.
*****
Last but not least, we’ll take a short trip to the Yasaka Shrine. There is no Starbucks there, but since we are on a tour of the city of Kyoto together, this is a must-see destination:
I owe a huge thank you to Noboru Sakamoto for providing me all of these photos. He is the copyright holder, and all photos are used with his permission. As I reviewed a number of his pictures, not all of which made it into this blog post, I certainly gained an appreciation for the beauty of the city of the Kyoto. Thank you again, Noboru, for lots of really great photos! So beautiful!
I hope you enjoyed your trip to Kyoto.

Ahh! I want that card! I just found out they have a Canadian starbucks card and now this?!
Love the photos, as always! Thank you Noboru, and Melody!
Aside from San Francisco, there is also a New York City card – don’t know of any other U.S. city cards.
Great Post!
Melody, you can use the photos of Kinkakuji Temple if you have time.
Kyoto is the ancient city which is the most beautiful in Japan. The city has vast important cultural property. There is always many tourists in Kyoto. I had conversation with many American tourists by a visit of this time.
The road of the town seems a chessboard, looks like a downtown Seattle. So Kyoto is easy for tourists. 😀
Very cool post!!!
Thanks Nob and thanks Melody for that…I really enjoyed! 😀
The Japanese Starbucks market is one of the most stunning to me…I love the bright Kyoto Card, that is a perfect example for how colorful the Asian market in general is. Japan and Asia have the nicest Tumblers out there…full of colors.
WHY not in Europe?? 😀
The featured stores are amazing! They make me even more want to travel to Japan ASAP…so clean, so futuristic, so beautiful in combining tradition and the American coffee culture.
Another beautiful “travel abroad” post, Melody. Noboru, the photos are exquisite!
The stores all look so crisp and spacious. I am particularly drawn to the photos of Sanjo Ohashi, however, and imagine sipping my coffee along the banks of the river.
Also have to say a very big thanks to Nobu and Melody what a great trip to Japan! The beauty of the city and the stores amazes me and still wonder why this design cannot be incorporated into USA stores. And I think it would be so neat to have city SB cards!
My friend is currently in Kyoto. I may have to convince her to bring back one though I don’t think it is usable from county to country.
Thank you Melody and thank you Nob!
The stores are so pretty! and a custom card too – i wish we had some here for various places.
great pix n write-up :]
#Kyoto is indeed a beautiful place [#memories]… i was there long before #starbucks n likely visited the Yasaka Shrine… can’t wait to go back, revisit Kyoto’s beauty, n grab a non-fat [with whip — gotta has whip!!!], sugar-free vanilla, extra-shot [sometimes two!] #mocha @ #starbucks 😀
Ah~ THAT was such a nice trip, indeed! EVERYTHING about this post was SO BEAUTIFUL & indulgent! The SBUX card art is amazing! Such beautiful photos! ALL of these stores looked marvelous. Wonder if that Sanjo Ohashi SBUX store is all of 3-stories? Thank you Mel, for this lovely journey to Kyoto & thank you @NOBrice for the spectacular photos! (3
Wow what a beautiful set of images. My son wants me to take him to Tokyo one day (it’s his #1 place to go in the world) and Kyoto will absolutely be on the list of places to visit.
I noticed the holiday cups, and focused intensely on the “SHARE” theme – Thank you Noboru and Melody for sharing this.
How funny that of the stores I’ve been to in Kyoto, these are the two that I remember! The Sanjo Ohashi store, Riki, is only one floor. Temomin is an awesome massage place – they’ve opened in Brisbane now.
Story time! I was walking past the Sanjo Ohashi store a number of years ago in early December. A partner was sampling food and beverages out by the road. Having never really had coffee (that wasn’t out of a bottle) before, I reluctantly tried what this barista called “Christmas Blend”. She recommended that I first try it without milk – I thought she was joking! Alas she wasn’t and I tried it anyway. I then tried the coffee with a morsel of a cranberry bliss bar. I’d only just tried coffee for the first time, but even I knew I was in heaven! I was so captivated by such an amazing flavor experience, I ended up going inside and purchasing my very own french press and half pound of Christmas Blend. That was the moment I fell in love with Starbucks whole bean!
What memories this blog post has brought, Melody! Thank you!
Hi melody,
Actually as a Starbucks card collector it’s very common in Europe to have ‘city cards’. Dublin in Ireland has its own card as done London! It was originally released for St.Patrick’s day but ended up staying! Here is a picture of it. I have gone through two of these, so now i keep a brand new un-used one for my collection. 🙂

Sorry for the small size, i didn’t have my camera handy..
Hi there. When you visit Japan, please visit Kyoto. Because there are many tourists from many countries, you don’t need speak Japanese. Stations, hotels, souvenir shop, etc.
Oops, STARBUCKS also. Haha.
Jorda_nn,
“Temomin opened in Brisbane now”. Thank you for news. Haha.
The Sanjo Ohashi store offers a “Noryo Yuka” place to the customer in summer.
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%B4%8D%E6%B6%BC%E5%BA%8A
The customer makes a long line to get the seat of the place. The use of the place is limitation each for one hour.
wow! great article!
i live in near Kyoto city, and love to visit,
good to see how cool the city is! lol
in Japan, we have othe 5 different city cards 🙂
and cant wait for cherryblossom promo next month!
hope they will sell another cherryblossom card.
@epeep – Glad to take you back down memory lane! @LatteRose – Do you have a New York card? I think you’re right that there was one.
@Diele – Don’t quote me on this! I think if a foriegn card is given to you and loaded in the store, it can be used as a form of payment, unregistered. I had a gift card sent to me from Canada (loaded in Canada) and I could not register it because of the foriegn funds. I’ve never tried to register an empty one. If it loaded overseas in Canada (and I think the UK too), it can be used in the US. I think there is still probably a lot about this that I am still figuring out.
@Miki – Thanks for dropping by! Hey what are the 4 other City cards in Japan? Last year, I was very very lucky that Noboru sent me the cherry blossom tumbler and card – There is a blog post of it here at this site. So beautiful! I hope to see this year’s too,

@Noboru – Can I say THANK YOU again? 😀 😀
Melody,
Yes, Starbucks coffee Japan Ltd releases that in this spring. New design cherry blossom tumbler & new design card & kimono bear & etc.
About a city limited sale card.
http://www.starbucks.co.jp/sbcard/index.html
They are Tokyo and Yokohama and Nagoya and Kyoto and Osaka and Okinawa.
Speaking of Kyoto, Japan gets only four Clover machines on Feb 23rd. “Kyoto Karasuma Sanjo building shop” gets the one Clover.
That is some beautiful card artwork, wish I had one of those in my collection.
Hi Tobias! I think it’s a beauty too. There’s nothing as ornate as that in a Starbucks card right now. By the way, last year’s Japan cherry blossom card was gorgeous too.
I’m afraid my physical collection is currently limited to US cards only, so you definitely have me beat on international card knowledge. I’ve always liked the sweater-clad terrier being taken for a walk as far as the cosmetic appearance of an individual card goes, but I would have to say my favourite is my 08 Pike Place card with the delivery truck because of the heritage captured in its classy look.
i have 5 Canada Cards and 1 Vancouver card to trade. email me directly with what you have. I only trade my un-used brand new cards for your cards in MINT & NEW condition.
There is a sutaba(starbucks) at yasaka, its just down the road on sanjo
I have lots of LA cards for any of the Japan ones! Please lemme know!
