CNBC airs a documentary on the coffee industry tomorrow, with a focus on Starbucks Coffee Company, and also Green Mountain Roasters, and it is simply called, “The Coffee Addiction.” The program airs Thursday, September 29th at 9PM ET/PT. Another link for more information on this program is here.
The documentary has an in-depth look at Starbucks, and includes interviews with Dub Hay, who is the SVP of Coffee and Tea at Starbucks. Dub slurps his way through a lot of coffee every year at Starbucks. The process of “cupping” coffee is a method of tasting coffee, and it is most commonly what professional roasters do to create blends, check quality, and analyze the perfect production roast level. Cupping also involves lots of slurping. You can’t be shy about slurping if you love coffee!
CNBC sat down with Howard Schultz and interviewed him about the ups and downs (and ups again) of the business of Starbucks. There is a tiny segment of the interview available through the CNBC You-tube page, and you can view that here:
The interview with Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz was conducted at the headquarters in Seattle, in the new “SODO 8” store which is inside the SSC. It is not open to the public but I do recognize the store. If I were to date when the interview was recorded, I would guess either May or June of this year: one can see Three Region Blend at the registers, and that was a promo coffee sometime this summer. (I don’t recall the exact dates of Three Region Blend.)
I recognize that this short You-tube segment of Howard has appeared on other blogs, but still it’s quite interesting to watch, so I thought I would share it here. Sadly, I probably won’t be watching this documentary, although I think I would enjoy it. I confess; I don’t even have cable. I’ve had the good fortune of listening to Howard speak in person, and I have just a few audio files of him here.

Melody, looks like this special is under the ‘CNBC Original’ banner of documentaries. Older episodes of this banner are available on Hulu to watch on your computer, you might want to keep your eye out for when it becomes available to stream.
Well, after listening to this interview (on CNBC) with H.S. I would say….. it’s not such a good one. I have always found it kind of insulting when a reporter asks a family member of a crime victim (as an example) or any tragedy: ‘how do you feel?’. And really, that’s about all I hear in this particular interview. repeat questions (and answers) essentially….plus,,it’s all in the book (Onward).
I do think the coffee doc. will be interesting, as they usually are, and informative.
@ChrisW – Good idea. I will check Hulu later. @DeniseR – Having listened to Howard talk a gazillion times, I realize that he so very practiced at his answers that he says the same thing over and over again. Probably a function of being interviewed like a million times. For me though, I often listen and hear what I have heard before. Howard loves the expression “laser focus” and even likes the phrase “a collision course with time” – There are a bunch of them. He’s great to listen to but who knows what this interview will be like. Also, we never really get a full picture of the interview. They probably recorded an hour with him to get 10 minutes that they will use on the air. I’m looking forward to scenes from the cupping room at the SSC – The Dub Hay section.
this interview was a bit boring, but it was expectable. i do not like the starbucks because of the management, i do like it because of their tasty specialities. and from this reason, i am not interested of the leader of the company. anyway, the best marketing strategy is the best coffee. (for a coffee company:))
