Welcome to the second Starbucks barista art contest at StarbucksMelody.com. It has been two full years since I’ve done this, and since I really do enjoy barista chalk art, I’m trying this contest a again. It’s almost the identical contest from two years ago. Here was the 2010 blog post announcing the chalk art contest:

And here were the 2010 winners and entries:

I so enjoyed finding chalkboard art that I created a whole category about it here (Chalkboard art and partner creativity).
I’m really convinced that there has to be a lot more of this hidden wonderful talent in the Starbucks stores. I’m on a mission to find it. That’s the goal of this contest. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST OR A BARISTA TO PARTICIPATE: All you have to do is go snap a photograph of barista-created art and follow the rules listed below! By the way, if you are a barista in a licensed store, or find great chalk art in a licensed store, that works too.
In order to make the contest worthwhile and entice people to join in, the prizes will be THREE grand prize winners, each winning a $50.00 Starbucks gift card. But there are a lot of rules!! Please read carefully!
All the rules are numbered 1 through 20 below:
- All entrants must be in the United States, Canada, Australia, or the UK.
- No barista artwork featured can be produced with stencils.
- All art work must have been on display inside a Starbucks store within the past 90 days of this blog entry.
- The art work must be on a standard Starbucks chalkboard. This is not an oil-painting, or watercolor or some other kind of art contest.
- All entry photographs become property of StarbucksMelody.com, and you agree that they may be featured in a future blog post at StarbucksMelody.com. You agree any watermarking of the photo by StarbucksMelody.com.
- All entries must be received no later than 6:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) on Friday March 30, 2012.
- All entrants must be over 18.
- In the event that the same art gets photographed twice by two different people, the person who submits it to me first in time is credited with the entry, and the later in time entry is void ab initio.
- Enter by emailing me a photograph of the artwork at Melody@StarbucksMelody.com.
- All email entries must include a first and last name, and a mailing address for a prize in case you’re a winner.
- IF, you have a twitter profile, please include that in the email too.
- No entry can be a photograph smaller than 300 x 300.
- All entries must be a “jpg” file format type.
- All entries must include the store information (store address, and store number too if possible) where the art work is on display currently.
- If the person submitting the entry is the barista who did the artwork, please speak up and say so!
- You may submit more than one entry.
- Winners will be picked entirely subjectively by “Starbucks Melody” deciding what she likes best.
- Again, no stencil art!
- No person may win more than one $50 gift certificate.
- Void where prohibited by law.
One of the very frustrating things that happened last time is that I had people tweeting me links to random art, and completely disregarding the above rules. I apologize for having rules, but to keep this organized and fair, if you want your entry to be considered, you really do need to follow the above list of rules.
Just as a reminder, you can take photos in a Starbucks. Generally speaking, professionals who are using photos in such a way to earn a living from them (such as journalists from news sources, or major bloggers who make a living from their blogging) need to contact press@starbucks.com or other media contacts before taking photos, but customers may take pictures in a store for their personal use. My understanding (so I hear) is that when Starbucks released an app for the Valentine’s Day cup, there was an email with a reminder at the bottom that customers may take photos in the store. I haven’t actually seen the email, but I’ve heard that there was this recent reminder.
The only way this will work will be to get lots of people involved, so I am counting on my readers to share this via Facebook, or tweet this, or retweet this too. For those following me on twitter, please know that you might see this same article tweeted numerous times between now and March 30, 2012. Please be patient!
I am really looking forward to what you come up with. I know for sure there is lots of talent in stores.

Looking forward to watching out for some creative chalk art designs. I wish my local SB would be more creative with the chalk board.
I wish I could enter my 2008 Verona sign where I replicated the coffee stamp. I won’t have time to recreate it. 🙁 Tempted to go in on my day off and chalk art it up!
Oh Melody…. Please, please, pretty please open this up to partners in Australia! We have some of the most amazing artists/partners here! Already, they’ve seen this and started to ask if we can get involved! We’d love to join in!
Oh great idea Stephanie! I will do that. I hope you can use a Starbucks card from the US in Australia – I think you can?? I’ve been told that you can in the UK and Canada.
Yep, you sure can!
This is so exciting! I love the chalk art and the search is on.
Are people from Ireland able to join ? They run on the same cards as the UK so the gift card should work !
@Ciaran – Sure – Ireland is fine! Please help spread the word too!
Cannot WAIT to see all the different chalkboard art ;D
@Kaori – I am totally with you! I hope that people can find some chalk art to send in. It makes me a little disappointed to see too much standardization in this area. Cut outs on a chalk board are NOT warm and friendly, and I think the chalk board art can be one way a store can show off its own personality.
Hard to think it has been two years since the last art work. Wish I had more artistic talent in free form but my creative flair is best shown through food displays. I love that you still bring focus to a part of the coffee culture that seems to be fading into history. Keep highlighting the talents of people that show their soul on canvas, as it were. Chalk up and everyone begin….
*Bump* Dear readers please join in! Only three entries so far!! You’ve got about one month to find some good chalk art, and please “share” this! Thank you!
I’m so happy there’s a round 2 for this contest! It was awesome last time seeing all of the excellent Starbucks chalkboard art! I’ve got my eyes peeled and my camera ready—I’m on the lookout for some great stuff to submit! 😀
Melody I have gone to a few SB stores and I just find there seems to be no interest in chalk art. The signs seem to be so boring as well as the displays. Certainly, if it keeps up this way I wonder if customers would not be inclined to purchase items because it does not catch their eyes?
I am not entering the contest, BUT i just wanted to say I think this is a great idea! Love your blog!
Thank you Ashly! Hope you’ll click “like” on the blog’s facebook page!
Melody,
I am so in! This will be fun! I’ll be hitting every SB in route when I travel now until the end of March, lol. And I have 2 SB within walking distance I can go check out also. Although, I don’t recall seeing great art there. But, you know, it’s always worth a trip. 🙂

I am hoping I have time to recreate my Verona sign I made in 2008. I promote tomorrow, so I am not sure if I will have time.
I have been looking out for great Starbucks chalk art ever since I saw this, but no luck so far! I hope the mere existence of this contest makes the baristas more competitive & creative. 🙂
I’m getting so bummed. i am not finding any great boards. 🙁 But I got a really good, very hot (like I like it) mocha. Hee hee!
@Allie- Don’t give up! There is nearly a month left, so you may still find something. 🙂
Come to my district. 🙂 I have chalk signs in 5 stores. I wish my Verona sign was at my new store. Proud of that thing. Plan to try to make some neat ones for my new store when I have time.
I just sent in my pics!
Just one week left! I haven’t gotten all that many entries!
