I am trying to spread the word about an art contest that I am doing. There are about three weeks left to send in your entries. You do not have to be an artist to submit something. Please read this blog post here, for all the details.
In response to the call for barista-produced chalk art, a partner in Michigan sent me this fantastic chalk art that he created for Pumpkin Spice’s return. This piece of art is fantastic. For my contest, the rule is that the artwork must have been displayed inside a Starbucks within the past 90 days. This “pumpkin spice” chalkboard is outside of the 90 days. It is such an amazing piece of art that I thought I’d just show it off right now. Maybe it will inspire a few more contest entries!
This is a total experiment (and may not work!) but I thought it would be great to use Facebook to spread the word about the contest. My idea is that I am asking readers to click on the Facebook “share” button and spread the word about the art contest. This also might introduce a few new readers to this site too. If you don’t want to share the art contest blog post, another idea might be to share the article about the Starbucks Coffee Gear store. I mention that Coffee Gear store because I recently dropped by there and bought 25 little keychains that are in the shape of a cup, with the Starbucks logo on them. It’s definitely a keychain that everyone would want to have! 😉 Let me know that you’ve “shared” the Art Contest blog article or the Coffee Gear store article, and I will mail you a little keychain.
There won’t be any totally obvious way for me to see that the article was shared, so I guess I will have to trust that it was. Come back here to this blog post, and leave a comment just telling me that you shared it. If you think that I need your mailing address to mail you a keychain, please email me at Melody at StarbucksMelody dot com. First 25 people to “share” (and come back and leave a comment here) are the winners of the little keychain. I know it’s only something small, but it’s affordable for me to do this (it wasn’t expensive to buy those) and on top of it all, unless you live in Seattle, the keychains are a little tough to come by!
You must be over 18 to win a keychain. And I will mail them just about anywhere. (Contest ends at 6 p.m. PST on March 11, 2012, or when all the keychains are gone, whichever comes first.)
Enjoy!

Melody I am not on facebook but would love to share the blog post about the coffee gear store and am going to twitter now. That piece of chalk art is outstanding!
Hey Melody!
I am a long time lurker, and I love your blog. It is often the first website I check after reading my email and checking facebook I did share your article about the Chalk Art Contest. We used to have a partner who did amazing chalk art, but she left over a year ago to do bigger and better things in the photography world. Love your blog, and love this contest!
Hey!
I shared your post on Facebook! I have been a long time lurker for over a year, and I really love this blog even as a partner! I feel that sometimes chalk art is often put to the back burner in many stores, especially with the distribution of stencils and printed cardboard images with magnets. It is refreshing to see that there are partners who are passionate about their job to take the time to draw something so beautiful.
just realized. I posted twice. How embarrassing. So sorry!
Hey Melody.
I have been following the site for a while. It’s fun as a manager to see other people get really excited for Starbucks. I have been sharing about the art contest on Facebook. Will start pushing it on Twitter as well.
Hope you are enjoying the beautiful drawings that are coming in.
Hi Melody
I reposted on my facebook and set a couple emails to friends. I hope it helps spread the word!
I’ll email my current address. 🙂
Hey Melody!
I shared your article on Facebook. I really enjoy reading your blog!
Can I email you my address?
I don’t have Facebook but had my daughter share on hers. She’s only 17 (18 next month) so she can’t win. But wanted to spread the word anyway cause we love the chalk art. Having a hard time finding any but my daughter says we’re on a mission now! Hope we find something.
Welcome Odessa! I like all your comments! Justin thank you for sharing it and sending in an entry. Im on my phne, so this is short, sloppy, and choppy. Lorna, by all means, please do email me! My email address is in this article.
I have already shared on facebook before, but I will again later. Very curious how they produced orange with the standard chalk ink markers…very beautiful! Makes me want to unsubmit mine!
shared on FB….. amazing how many ‘lurkers’ came out. Maybe they’ll be a regular part of this now.
Melody, why don’t you have everyone like your page and tag it when they share the article?
I shared them both 🙂
I shared your post on my FB wall. I hope you get a lot of attention for it!! I love chalk art!
Hi Melody,
I shared it on facebook. Thanks for all your hard work!
I shared. I have one picture that I took to send you. But it’s nothing like the chalk art I’ve seen on this blog!!
I shared. 🙂
My FB page is http://www.facebook.com/aayers1
Shared on FB &Twitter! Realized I haven’t liked & followed you despite reading your blog for awhile now!
Melody, I just shared the art contest post on my Facebook wall! I’m still keeping an eye out for some great art in my area—so much of it is stenciled, which makes me sad. But hopefully there will be some good entries. This pumpkin spice one is fantastic! I love the idea of showcasing the talent at Starbucks! 🙂
Just shared the link on FB…love the keychains. I will email you my address in case you have any left. Cannot wait to see the artwork and I wish our local store was creative.
Shared both on Facebook just now! Would love a keychain!
I’ve been out running around most of the morning, and now I’m checking back in to see just where we’re at with this giveaway. Thank you everyone who has done a fb share thus far.
I don’t think there have been 25 fb shares yet, but given the comments here, I think this is what I’ve seen:
1. Justin
2. Coolwatyr
3. Lorna
4. Becky E
5. Diele
6. Denise R

8. Coco
9. Bernard Lin
10. Hayley
11. Amy
12. Earl Dizon
13. Pencil to paper
14 Sandra Trolinger
15. Jennifer White
From what I can see, it appears that I have still 10 more keychains to give away. I notice that many people have not emailed me a postal address to send out the keychain. By the way, to mail out 25 of these will take some work, so it may be a full week before it gets in the mail to you.
Please do send me an email! I would rather have an email from you twice than not at all. Melody at StarbucksMelody.com
Thank you everyone!!!
Someone mentioned that they wished their store was more creative….that depends a lot on abilities too. I would love to have beautiful signs, I just don’t have the talent to draw them. Guess I need to hire an artist next 🙂
The biggest obstacle for my store is that we don’t really get a budget for time to get the art done. If someone at my store wanted to do something that great but it would have to be on donated time. I’ve had partners do it then photograph it for their art portfolio. In general we have less than 30 minutes allotted to the board per rollout.
Such a nice contest! Congrats to your art experiment, I think you’ve done a really good job! And I would be so glad about that keychain!
I shared on FB, hope it helps to spread the word. I loved those balancing latte mugs a couple of years ago, beautiful!

And please do email me at Melody at StarbucksMelody dot com if you think I need your postal address. Please be sure to tell me your name, and the name you posted under here if it is different.
I always love seeing chalk art when I walk in – it’s almost always the first thing that catches my eye. That Pumpkin Spice art is amazing!
I shared 🙂 EXCITED to see all the pics from this contest! <3 chalk art!
I shared the blog via Facebook. Are there any key chains left? I would love to have one 🙂
I will be sure to mention it on the podcast this week! What a great idea!!

The Pumpkin Spice looks so great! If you have not mentioned that it is chalk art, I might wonder what medium you used on that piece.
really almost impossible to find any more decent chalk art in Sbux around here these days. 🙁
I generally make signs with a little art and more powerful writing. I just made one for espresso roast with a pair of shot glasses and a few scattered espresso beans. It mentioned how this blend is a part of Starbucks history and how it was crafted to make the very first Starbucks latte. Though much has changed since then, this iconic blend still features a darker profile with rich caramelly sweetness. Also, I made a basket with a sign that says:
Use Via to Make Your Perfect Latte At Home
Step One: Choose your favorite Via
Step Two: Pick your favorite syrup
Step Three: Add hot or cold water and/or milk
Step Four: Relax and enjoy with a loved one.
I put both baskets next to each other by the sign featuring the Vanilla Latte this promo. I am hoping it will inspire customers to try making lattes at home and see we sell our beans and syrup to help craft that perfect latte.
Thank you to everyone who shared about the art contest. I definitely ended up with more art submissions in 2010, than now. But there still is a little over 2 weeks left to enter in! I hope a few people will read this and still send in some entries:
http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2012/02/19/contest-find-chalkboard-art-drawn-by-starbucks-baristas-you-don%E2%80%99t-have-to-be-an-artist-to-enter/
I definitely have more blog traffic now in 2012 than I did in 2010, and there is reader engagement still too. I think the big difference is that there are fewer pieces of a chalk art in a Starbucks than ever before. The baskets that have the whole bean coffee are an opportunity to do something creative but mostly they just have a little lettering on them, and that’s it. I get that not every store has a real artist, but I would rather see partner creativity – even mediocre – than stencils and paper displays on chalkboards. I really see that the art in the store is one way for a store to show off its personality, and shine a bit.
I am still optimistic! I have about ten entries so far, and there still is plenty of time to get in an entry, so maybe will end up with a few more. Thanks again for sharing this.

(I will be working on getting the keychains out in the mail some time this week, but it might be the end of the week before I get them out.)
I would love to do some chalk art at my regular store…but am guessing that’s not gonna happen. not to mention, they have some bigger issues right now, like the whole “non permit” very bad “re-model”….that they’re trying to get improved. ughhhhh.
I went to a different Starbucks this morning, and they are using the same stick-ons I saw at another location, with just drink names written in chalk 🙁 Sad.
That is the schematic we are supposed to follow. You tend to see some creativity if the store features baskets of their best selling whole bean.
Well it’s too bad we don’t have more enthusiastic baristas in our stores like Diele. Actually the store I go to most often seems to be trying a little more in several areas. They have a bad store set up with the bank they share space with so I think that’s part of the problem. I’ve noticed some baskets of whole beans with the small chalkboards in them. The artwork is not great but better than nothing. It got my attention so maybe I’ll go back and get pictures of those. The main chalkboard had kind of decent artwork right before the contest but it changed before I got a picture and I don’t like what’s there now. But it’s not stencils so that’s something, right?
Hi Mel, I don’t need a keychain. I really was just commenting :p
Wow this is a good idea! I love art and think its great that some partners do this. At my local sawbucks we have a little art section, with some beautiful paintings of the local hills and mountains. I asked my barista once how they choose which paintings to put on the walls, she said you can talk to the manager about it, she said a few of them were hers and i thought that was really awesome… anyway that was my short story. I shared the fb post also.
Blackeco123 – Thank you for sharing this.
I think I caused enormous confusion with this blog post. I got a few emails, all from different readers, who thought that they could no longer submit an art entry. This keychain contest was just to share the word about the contest. The actual contest deadline is March 30th. Learned my lesson!! I must’ve written something confusingly, because it wasn’t just one person but several people who thought that I was no longer accepting chalkart board submissions:

^ That is the contest – deadline is March 30, 2012
I’m working through packing up these keychains. There are several folks for whom I still do not have a mailing address. And I realize that I should have included Odessa on my list above too! Odessa, if you’re reading this, you were a winner too.
i am searching for a starbucks with chalk art — my des moines area needs some representation in the contest!
I still need mailing address info for Coco, Amy, Jessica Smith and Earl Dizon: Please email me at Melody at StarbucksMelody dot com.
Hmm… It looks like I’ll have a few left over keychains …
Hi! I sent you my address earlier today, so please let me know if you didn’t receive it. 🙂
Received the keychain yesterday, thanks Melody!! My daughter and I went searching for chalk art in the afternoon and found nothing worthy of a picture. So sad really. One store that has a nice mermaid actually painted on the side of the building gave us the most hope for good art inside as well. It was the worst of all we’ve seen. Just the word Tribute on the chalkboard. Not even fancy type font so that was depressing. They had the small chalkboards in the baskets of beans but the artwork was rushed and not interesting at all, just scribbled. Three more stores to check today, not giving up quite yet!
