May 1st marks the introduction of the newest Frappuccino into the Starbucks Frappuccino lineup: It is the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino. Has anyone tried it? And the famous Frappuccino happy hour comes back soon too. From May 4, 2012 through May 13, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., customers can order half-price Frappuccinos.
I haven’t tried the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino so I’m not certain if I will like it. It looks quite sweet, and I’m not a huge Frappuccino drinker. (Though I remember the days of the ‘malt’ Frappuccino and had a weakness for those.)
Just this past Sunday (4/29/12), I dropped by the Starbucks located at First and Walker, and noticed a fantastic huge billboard near the store. I love big Starbucks billboards and so this did put a smile on my face:
There were three baristas working, two of whom already knew me. One of them said that she’d been experimenting with the Mocha Cookie Crumble ingredients, and came up with this variation that she really liked: I am terrible at deciphering cup markings but here’s what it was: Grande, x CCRumbles, WH, 1H, 2 sc protein, 3 CB. Hopefully that makes some sense to some of my readers. I did think it was a nice variation. The crumbles were blended into the drink, and the whip-cream was still the wonderful normal whip-cream that Starbucks is famous for. That was entirely her creation. Give it a try! It wasn’t overly sweet, but nice and chocolatey.
Launching tomorrow, there are domed cup lids and replacement green straws in the stores for your re-usable cold cups. It doesn’t look like the “tall” size re-usable cold cups are being offered again. There was one last holiday season, but I haven’t seen one since then. So glad I got mine then! I’ve seen the domed lids and replacement straws but didn’t get a photo of them. I’ll go back later and update this blog article with a photo of that merchandise.
There is more: The official Starbucks @Frappuccino profile on Twitter is encouraging you to take a photograph of your Frappuccino and tweet it with the hashtag #FrappuccinoHappyHour. There is a contest where winners can win a $25 Starbucks gift card. Details are on the official Frappuccino Community page.
Now is a perfect time to remind my readers that customers MAY take photos inside a Starbucks. If you have a problem, contact customer service. I know that many partners do not know that the photo policy went through major changes in 2009. It appears that the Frappuccino twitter photo contest is only open to residents of the U.S. or Canada.
Also, in my twitter stream, I had partners tell me that the UK and Ireland market does not launch the Mocha Cookie Frappuccino until May 18, 2012. Sorry that my friends in the UK and Ireland have to wait a bit longer for it.
So how does everyone like the new Frappuccino?

Interesting variation there. Looks like it had extra cookie crumbles, whole milk (standard), 1 pump of hazelnut syrup, 2 scoops of protein powder, and 3 pumps of coffee base (standard.)
It should have looks something like this:
1H
2 prot xCCrumbles
MCCF
I’m really pleased to see that you guys are excited for it’s launch today ^^
As mentioned, we peeps over here in the UK don’t launch it til Friday May 18th ^^
As an extremely experienced Starbucks barista, I personally think it’ll be a huge hit ^^
Poland and other Central European markets are lauching it on May 7th. 🙂
I’m sure this will be a big hit for alot of people but not something I would order for myself. too much stuff. (altho I could see it maybe being not as sweet as it sounds due to the overall combination…)
The Happy Frapp Hrs will be a good thing but probably not so much for the baristas.
The new frappuccino is too sweet for me, although I did find that having the chocolate whip on it, which is not sweet, helped even that out. My personal favourite is still substituting white mocha for the mocha (and leaving out the vanilla – this is the cause of the extra sweetness if you ask me!) Adding one pump of hazelnut is interesting…
Our store is excited about Happy Hour…a couple of them weren’t here last year and are kinda nervous – we have a small bar area – but we’re having a contest in our store to see which shift can run the fastest Happy Hour. Our weather seems like it’s gonna be better this year, so we’re anticipating an even better turnout than last year… *gulp*
I work at Starbuck and have found it to be a HUGE hit already! It is made by making a regular java chip frappaccino (mocha, choc chips), then we add vanilla syrup cuz the mocha tends to be on the bitter side. We add our new chocolate whipped cream and cookie crumble sprinkle on top of whip! I love chocolate but this is a bit of an overload for me! : )
My local Starbucks store has a message on the chalkboard saying that coconut is back on May 5th. The barista I talked to about it said that the mocha cookie crumble won’t be available until then either. No mention of happy hour so I’m concerned that my area won’t be included in that promotion. We were left out of the last treat receipt so I won’t be surprised if we don’t get the happy hour.
I actually just noticed it last night but found that the sign for it was placed in an area where I am not sure is totally visible because there are too many things around it and it is just too busy. I am not a Frap person either but if it works that is great. I love the billboard. I have not seen any billboards around here. Is it a Seattle thing?
Ooh! When they’re done with that billboard may I get a bag made out of part of that billboard? I’ll take two sections cut from the upper right portion of the billboard please. 😉
They actually are offering the tall cold cup, I saw it yesterday in Scottsdale… they also have a stainless steel version which is pretty sleek looking. Im looking forward to getting the refreshers back… Living in an iced tea all year round area, I was hoping they would keep the refreshers for us all year around. They didnt can the lime flavor (my fave, although not as popular as berry) so Im hoping it comes back this Summer 1.
I’m not muc of a frappuccino drinker, but I am super exicted for this! Maybe without the vanilla, to tone down the sweetness. This would definitely be a dessert drink for me, like when I am craving a milkshake!
Looks like the new re-usable cold cups are back to the original design – not the take apart 2 cups in one with 1/2 silicone top like they had late last year. the original design broke easily when dropped, but they were dishwasher safe.
It will be interesting to see how many of these Starbucks actually continues to sell. When they first came out, they were unique to Starbucks, but now it’s been a few years and they’re available everywhere.
For me the big news today was not the Frappuccino or Three Regions Blend but all the new cups/mugs/tumblers.
My Starbucks was sampling presses of Three Regions Blend yesterday and had it on tap today. Frankly, not nearly how I remember it from last year. Way too floral and fruity with hardly any true “coffee” flavor.
I like the return to the original style cold cups. The straw has changed. It is not molded with the straw, it is now a force fit ring and may be a “dirt” catcher and potentially could work its way off.
I added the new Yukon mug to my collection and might buy the limited edition stainless steel cold cup. They should make a special limited edition gold colored version for us special people 😉 .
Almost forgot, the raspberry swirl cake is back. Glad they were sampling as my blood sugar could not take much more than the little bite, but it had a great clean raspberry taste.
Sure a lot of stuff this month, particularly since last month was so slim. Too bad most people seem to have missed the community service theme for April.
I love anything sweet and chocolatey so I had to reward myself with the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino. Delicious!
Excited for the half price frappuccinos since my kids love them and we all want to try out the mocha cookie flavor. I think I may ask them to make it MINUS the chocolate chips.
Far more important than the Cookie Crumble is the return of Coconut syrup! Got my first iced coconut mocha of the spring/summer this afternoon!
The Cookie Crumble sounds like it may be a good afternoon snack.
I am happy to see those domed lids hit the stores. I purchased two a couple of years ago online. Not because I needed the room for whipped cream but just because I like the look of the domed cup. Customers, Partners and even a couple of Managers have asked me where I had purchased the dome lid. I was surprised that none of them knew they were available online prior to the release in stores.
@Purple1 – I’ve been meaning to come back to you about the billboard, but I’m stretched thin this week. I could do a whole blog post on that one billboard. LOL. I don’t know that Starbucks billboards are all that universal but the one featured above in this article happens to be a stone’s throw from the headquarters. It would be an easy walk to the SSC. So over the years, there is always always a Starbucks billboard on it. It’s here in this blog post too:
http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2011/12/09/the-starbucks-billboard-tote/
(“Seattle is known as the home of great coffee” is the same billboard.) I wish I had always consistently taken a photo of it, and saved it, but I’ve deleted a gazillion photos, and haven’t always snapped a pic of that billboard.
Any chance with soy and no whip this is vegan? I know the mocha Frap with soy is, and Oreo Cookies are vegan, but not sure about the ingredients in the cookies. Anyone know?
I’m personally not a fan. The only change between the Java Chip and Double Chocolatey Chip frappuccinos and the new drinks are the added pumps of vanilla. Having not had a Java Chip frappuccino in a long time – or any blended drinks for that matter – I recommended having it double blended. The chips were too chunky and got stuck in my straw one too many times.
I haven’t had a chance to try the Mocha Cookie Crumble yet, but I can’t wait to! It probably will be a little on the sweet side for me, but I can’t resist—it sounds pretty tasty to me! Also, I was really excited to see the domed lids and extra straws for sale in store. I’ve been meaning to order some from the Starbucks website, but just hadn’t got around to it. Also, I love the Frappuccino photo contest! How fun!
I love this promo. It tried the Cookie Crumble today and it was great. I love the chocolate whip! I will be making several trips over the next week, that’s for sure!
I don’t really drink frapps but do like the occasional coffee soy frap. But it’s cool that Starbucks brought back this promotion. I did purchase a pack of the 3 venti straws. I don’t remember them being sold in the stores in the past.
@dadcooks, I agree with you about 3 Regions blend. It was much better last year. I tried it last week and it didn’t taste like coffee to me.
the chips are NOT vegan, so leave those out too!!!!
@Van there is no need to double blend anything any longer. The new blenders only make the frappuccinos watery if you do so and do a fine job blending well the first time.
We have a lot of the tall sized cold cups!
I caved and bought the stainless iced tumbler-“do I need this…no I don’t need it…but it will last…” lol LOVE it. I find things are colder after sitting in it for a few minutes than when I put the drink in it and no sweating!
Oh-and for me, it’s all about this chocolate whipped cream. Not nice to do to the pregnant girl starbucks lol My fav so far: a 3 pump white mocha 1 pump mocha , coconut marble hot chocolate with chocolate whipped cream. Great treat!
@Beenaround and @Melody – forgot about the chocolate whipped cream – thanks for the reminder. Melody – you drink doppio con pannas, right? Try it with the chocolate whipped cream. Wow.
@CD – con pannas with the chocolate whip are to die for. I’m in big trouble…I had one with a pump of hazelnut in it, and it tasted amazing!
@CD: a doppio con panna with choc. whip sounds really good! I’ll be trying that later today…..
I did taste one of the cookie mocha frapps……… no big deal for me. And actually, the choc. whip seems less sweet than plain whip… don’t know if that’s true.
But, will try a doppio w/ the choc. whip!
The chocolate whipped cream does make it less sweet, I think too. I love the doppio con panna with chocolate whipped cream! I’ll be trying that for sure!
@DeniseR Hayley, and Rebecca – I had a doppio con panna with choc whip the other day when visiting 1912 Pike Place. It’s my fave store to get that beverage because of the manual shots. Delicious! I have to go back and have it again soon!
Regular whip cream IS sweeter because vanilla syrup is added to it. The chocolate whip cream just gets the mocha sauce which is not as sweet as the vanilla syrup : )
the mocha cookie crumble is the best frappuccino i ever try
Hey all!
I’ve only begun going to our new Starbucks recently and fell madly in love with The Chocolate Cookie Crumble (not to be confused with the mocha crumble). I’ve searched the net but can’t find a recipe. I always order. Venti Chocolate Cookie Crumble (no coffee). Can someone please help me out? It’d be MUCH appreciated!
-Thanks !
Hi Piper – Welcome to StarbucksMelody.com! Hope you’ll “like” the blog’s facebook page too. (See widget in the right-hand column).
I’m not totally sure what you mean by The Chocolate Cookie Crumble? And are you saying you want to make Frappuccinos at home. I think that it would be hard to duplicate a Frappuccino because of the proprietary special “base” that is used. It’s essentially milk, ice, mocha sauce (which is a chocolatey sauce), and then some kind of “base” and whip cream and a topping.
Hopefully a partner will weigh in and help us out. I have to admit, I order so few Frappuccinos that I’m not very clear in what the recipes are – I just haven’t been paying attention to Frappuccino recipes. We need help from a partner.
By the way, congrats on your town getting a new Starbucks. Sounds like you found a nice store.
Melody,
Thanks for the speedy reply. Yes– I was referring to making them at home. I don’t think it would be extremely difficult because I sort of have a lst of ingredients just not the proportions. The drink I always get is the Venti Chocolate Cookie Crumble Creme (no coffee). Im reasonably sure I can tackle this at home (I’m just gonna need a much better blender first!) lol.
-P.
the bases have changed since i barista’d, but the frappucino base had always previously been a mysterious liquid mix that came in a box. we measured the mix, ice, additives, etc very precisely in specially marked blender pitchers. there was no way for a barista to be able to tell you what proportion of what was in that mix, beyond showing you the ingredients list on the side of the box.
i’m sure it’s slightly different now, but probably still a mystery for the most part.
You won’t be able to make them at home due to the base that we use to hold it all together. However, the recipe is pretty simple. It’s milk, chocolate syrup (mocha), and chocolate chips, along with some vanilla and then the base. Same as a mocha cookie crumble only minus the coffee. Then it gets chocolate whipped cream, chocolate drizzle and cookie crumbles!
Thanks guys for the info. I’m also conversing with a girl on another blog about the recipe and she’s mentioning a vanilla powder…which confuses me. But ..meh, I’ll get to play n00b barista in my kitchen tomorrow, lol.
OH—here’s a thought: how about using a scoop of the Starbucks mocha Frappuccino ice cream for a “base” ?
@piper- You could try using some of our VIA but with a little less water as a coffee substitute. You’re going to get caught up on the emulsifier. If you don’t mind drinking fast, you’d be in luck
@Jess
Well, there enlies a glitch. I order my drink without coffee, so adding VIA would mess up the flavor for me. But I appreciate your help : )
I don’t know how using ice cream would work as a base. The current base is a (mystery) syrupy type thing, it gets pumped into the blender pitcher as the last ingredient before blending. It emulsifies and makes the Frappuccino easier to pour out. For a Chocolate Cookie Crumble: the mocha sauce is chocolate flavored, and there’s also vanilla syrup and chocolate chips blended w/ milk, ice and base. No coffee is added. Then of course, the chocolate whip cream and cookie crumbles are only sprinkled on the top. I don’t think vanilla powder is going to help you in anyway, unless it’s the only vanilla you have.
They kind of have a ratio on the iPhone app. A Venti looks to have 4 pumps of mocha sauce and 4 pumps of vanilla and 4 scoops of chocolate chips. I don’t know the ratio for the milk and the ice though.
Chocolate cookie crumble is the creme version of mocha cookie crumble – so there is no frap roast and instead of coffee base it is the creme base. Easy as pie. So a grande CCF would be: whole milk, 3 CBS pumps of mocha, 3 CBS pumps of vanilla, 3 scoops frap chips, creme base, topped with chocolate whip and cookie crumbles. MCCF follows the same recipe but with frap roast added in and coffee base instead of creme.
Thanks Matt !
I’m gonna try a series of experiments and I’ll report back (that is, unless I’m in jail for breaking into Starbucks in the middle of the night and stealing a drum of the ‘magical’ ingredient . Lol
Here is the secret to thicken a homemade frappuccino, use Xanthan Gum (pinch = 1/8tsp) or Pectin (1tsp).
Here is a good webpage that shows you how to make frappuccino:
Make a Starbucks Frappuccino for $0.32
pectin is a very good idea, and not too hard to find. beautiful idea, dadcooks 🙂
@Matt,
What does CBS mean?
My plan is to make enough for a Venti sized drink because that’s what I always order. I’ve recieved an entire list of rambling ingredients that folks from other forums have suggested —But, I’m soo LOST !
First and foremost, I must match the Creme base:
Perhaps with Starbucks mocha icecream?
Then there’s
– whole milk
– ice
– dark chocolate chips
– vanilla syrup
– either chocolate syrup or coco powder..
– Oreo cookies to make the crumble dust.
– and possibly xanthan gum
*sceams*. I have all kinds of different amounts and I’m just so lost and confused, can someone be kind enough to help me with nailing this recipe down?
Thanks!
CBS = cold bar syrop. The pump quantity is half of a hot bar pump…sonif hot bar pumps = 1oz, CBS pump = .5oz
