Starbucks will be launching an all new Via into their Via Ready Brew lineup. The new Via is a Peppermint Mocha, and will be available in stores on November 13th. Like the recently released Pumpkin Spice Via, it will be a limited, seasonal offering. Every year, Starbucks emphasizes peppermint as a seasonal syrup, though it is possible to order the peppermint syrup year-round (though the special toppings, such the chocolate curls, are only available during the holiday promotional period.). It makes total sense that a peppermint mocha would be a natural expansion for the Via lineup! One interesting thing about this new Peppermint Mocha Via is that it’s meant to be enjoyed with hot milk over hot water.
It’s amazing how the Via lineup has developed over the years. On March 3, 2009, Starbucks launched (in limited cities) the very first two Via Ready Brew offerings: Italian Roast and Colombia Via. I can definitely say that when I read the initial official blog at Starbucks.com about the March Via launch, I didn’t imagine any of the flavored offerings which have been so popular.
I give it two thumbs up. I discovered that Target put this on sale early, so much to my surprise, I got to try this early! When I got home with my Via, I microwaved milk (about 8 to 9 ounces), and tested it out. I paid $7.99 for a box with six Via sachets inside, and I also discovered that inside was a coupon for $1.00 off of Via.
It has a distinctive mocha flavor with a subtle peppermint flavor from start to finish. It’s very nicely done. Don’t expect an overly sugary candy cane flavor.
By the way, that’s not my perfectly polished nail in the lead photo. Thank you to the person who sent me that photo. One very interesting thing – I don’t know if Target has slightly different packaging than what will be in the retail stores. The photo with the finger with red nail polish came from someone who went to the Starbucks Leadership Conference in Houston. It’s really clear that one box says that there is 5 Via sachets, and the other box says 6. I do think it’s very possible that if you’re buying this in the Starbucks stores, it will be in a box of 5 sachets, and that the CPG line of distribution (Target, grocery channels) will have a slightly bigger box with 6 sachets.
For those who are curious, the back of the box says that each Via sachet is 80 calories.
What do you think? Have you tried this new Via yet? I think this is another one that will be good to stock up on.

Of the two VIAs (Pumpkin Spice or Peppermint Mocha) which do you prefer?
@Hayley – That’s easy. The peppermint mocha Via is much better than Pumpkin Spice. I’m not that hugely into PS, and I like the mocha flavor in this. The one group of customers who will be disappointed in this new Peppermint Mocha Via are the ones who feel like they need to be drinking a whole candy cane – the people who like too sweet drinks. But I encourage people to try it, and tell me how they like it.
I haven’t tried this yet but have been assured ( and can tell by the amount in my store that there is a lot more than the pumpkin flavor. Make sure you buy early if you do like it. We have already full launched Christmas in Canada…the rollout is beautiful 🙂
I picked this up at Target last week. I have not tried it yet but my sons (15 & 19) love it.
This is one flavored VIA that I think I’ll actually like. Will get it at Target. (I can always add my own peppermint if I want more flavor).
I agree about the Pumpkin Spice VIA…not so good to me. I had one in hot milk and have used the rest for baking.
Hi Melody,
Canadian Starbucks stores launched this product on Friday, November 2nd, when they launched the Christmas promotion. I’m a partner at one of the locations in Edmonton, AB, and yeah, the Peppermint Mocha VIA has definitely caught on with customers. I enjoyed it too, so I’d recommend it to anyone for a nice taste of the holidays. 🙂

I keep wanting to try this, but I haven’t — too busy planning for the holiday season! You know what would pair great with this Via? A Verismo milk pod! Yeaahh no more microwaving your milk, just toss in a milk pod and the via and bam! Quick little latte.
@Chase, I have a great milk frother that you just plug in at the wall and it makes perfect milk, which I use with my via sachets!
Just saw this myself this past weekend at Target. Was very tempted to purchase it since it is my husbands favorite drink from Starbucks year round. When he isn’t drinking the Peppermint Mocha he gets the standard Mocha. I’m sure I’ll pickup a box for a stocking stuffer. It is a bit expensive for me but I probably feel that way since I don’t and can’t drink it myself.
I can’t wait to try this one- I’m eager to try it because you said it wasn’t that sweet- I hate how most VIA flavors are too sweet! Also, I’m not a fan of mochas but my husband and I are huge Peppermint hot chocolate fans-
If anyone is looking for a topping to put on their peppermint mochas/hot chocolates at home this is great- http://www.crateandbarrel.com/peppermint-bits/s462926
@Amy – Can’t wait to hear if you like it! Please come back and let us know! I’ve been using this Via as an ice cream topping too. Many of the flavored Vias make absolute perfect ice cream toppings!
Sounds delicious, but I have a feeling this wont be heading to UK Shores.
I’m drinking a mug of it right now! I liked it so much that I googled it, and to my surprise I learned from your blog that it is to be made with milk. I made mine with water, an a splash of cream. It tastes amazing, and not heavy at all like I imagine it might with milk. Two thumbs up from this Via drinker!
I just tried it this morning. I got it on my way to work so I used water instead of milk ( plus the whole calorie issue). It is great with water and just a little cream as Lindsay suggested. Not too sweet BUT is someone is really into the peppermint…maybe adding the Internation Delight Peppermint Mocha creamer will enhance it for you.
This product is not even close to the Peppermint Mocha Via that was sold in previous years that was designed to be mixed with milk. This new mix-with-water PM Via has that fake, dry-milk taste and leaves an icky after-taste. Even when I tried mixing it with milk, it was still pretty awful. Since I was a HUGE fan of the previous version, as soon as I saw it available I bought 5 boxes. Ugggh! Why can’t companies leave fine products alone? Or if they change things this drastically, keep the “classic” version available.
