Last month, the first Tazo Tea store (operated by Starbucks) opened. It’s been almost two months since I’ve been back to the Tazo store, so I decided I was overdue to check out what’s new. On top of that, when I did the Tazo Tea Card (which of course can be used at any Starbucks and registered online to Starbucks.com/card) giveaway, I discovered that it was one of my most popular giveaways ever. Lots of people wanted a Tazo card!
When I walked into the Tazo store today (December 29, 2012), I was immediately greeted by Cody, who remembered me from my last visit in. In my first article abut the Tazo Tea store, he was the Tazo partner making my sparking iced tea. He joked that he was disappointed that I’d only featured his hands in my last article. He is such a nice guy! I explained to him that I needed a few gift cards for another Tazo Tea card giveaway. As he was getting my three cards, I snapped a very quick photo of him in action:
This store is chocked full of merchandise. I just want to look at every little thing, and smell all the teas, despite that I’d much rather having coffee over tea. I went around taking a ton of pictures of what’s for sale. There were coasters, spoons, tea sets, kettles, flavor-infused sugars, bottles of green tea oil, and much more. And of course, there were a million teas. As to the food, the white chocolate and chai chocolate bar is still one of my favorites. I decided to try the savory Madeleines on this trip in. That was an interesting experience. I’m not sure that a Madeleine cookie is meant to be savory. I really did want to like them a lot. There were two savory Madeleine flavors: Lemon Chive and a Tomato herbal one. (I don’t recall the exact name of the tomato flavored one). The lemon and chive was the better of the two. I’m sorry but these were odd, and didn’t fit in with all the other Tazo tea goodness. So here are merchandise photos – be sure to click onto the thumbnail image to make it larger:
The problem is that I would need like 20 or 30 pictures to really take you on a virtual shopping trip in this store.
I saw something very cool happening while I was there. James, a tea master in the store, was leading a tea tasting and cupping at the community table. It started shortly after I arrived. I asked the manager about it. The store manager explained to me that earlier in the week a woman dropped by the store and asked if she experience a tea tasting for her and her whole family – the customer explained that her family was in town for the holidays, so it was a large group. The store manager absolutely said ‘yes’ and made the time for James to sit down and walk the large family through a tea tasting. That is so cool. That is what I call customers connecting with a store. I walked near the tasting and grabbed my bag, and I overheard James explaining to the family that Tazo was started by Steve Smith many years ago, and then bought later by Starbucks. It was quite clear that the family didn’t realize that Tazo was in the Starbucks family of brands. Everything about it struck me as so cool. I don’t know if others get so excited about this like I do, but I love coffee and tea education. Here’s the group at a distance:
********** TAZO TEA CARD GIVEAWAY **********
I am certain that all my readers know that a person can use a Tazo Tea card at any Starbucks store, any Evolution Fresh store, and the Tazo store. You earn a star for each transaction at Evolution Fresh and Tazo. The Tazo card can be registered to your Starbucks.com/card profile, and can be reloaded and used exactly like any Starbucks card. This makes it a very unique Starbucks card! 😉
I bought three Tazo cards (one of each color) and each one is loaded with $15.00 on it. There will be three winners. As usual, your odds of winning depend upon the number of entries received. You must leave a comment in this article (not an email reply to me) to be counted. You must be over age 18. You must post your comment and entry before January 5, 2013, at 11:00 p.m. PST. I’ll ship the card anywhere – if you’re outside of the United States, that’s fine too. You must share something of mine somewhere. You can tweet any StarbucksMelody.com article. You could share any Facebook post on this blog’s Facebook page. You could do a Google+ share of any of my Google+ posts. You could even share any of the Seattle’s Best Melody articles. Or you could re-pin anything you like from my Pinterest profile. Or, last but not least, I guess you could just retweet me! When you enter, be sure to use a real email address so that I can easily reach you if you are a winner. And please be patient with me in getting the winners posted, and prizes out in the mail.
I really do look forward to your comments on this fun store, or whatever it is you want to comment on. Do let me know if you’ve made a share.
And one more time, I want to say a big thank you to the small group of readers (you know who you are!) who have bought me a cup of coffee!
I’d like to wish all of my readers a very happy 2013! I’ll see you next year!

Thanks for the write-up on the Tazo tea. As you…I’d rather have a cup of coffee, but after my daughter just returned from a semester in Europe and becoming a tea lover I am going to give it a go!
I’ve tried a few Tazo teas….I think they have a nice holiday blend.
Oh I would love to see a Tazo store open up in Hawaii! In my opinion it would do well. Mahalo Melody for sharing your experience with us!
I use to love tea so much, but after I started working at Starbucks I just fell so deeply in love with coffee!! ^_^ Still love tea but I am now happily having an affair with coffee!! __<
I found it ironic that just as this popped up in my tweet stream, I had settled down with a cup of Tazo sweet cinnamon spice 😉 I love the pictures of the store. Thanks for letting us visit vicariously through you!
I don’t drink coffee at all, ever. But Tazo is my favorite brand of tea and Passion is my favorite of their teas.
I retweeted this tweet of yours: Starbucks Melody @SbuxMelodyBlog

@tammigirl
Please ask them to give us a Tazo store by my house!
Wow, I had no idea that Tazo tea was such a developed brand. I’m a dedicated coffee drinker, but I do enjoy a cup a tea here and there, too. The Gingerly Jasmine, Apricot Vanilla Creme, and Aloha Citrus sound yummy. Those infused raw sugars would be quite the treat for tea or oatmeal. And Green Tea Seed Oil? Who knew! From your pictures I can tell the store is aesthetically pleasing…seems to be a cross between a zen and delicate glam design. Nice! Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year to you!
As you already know…I’m a HUGE tea fan and despite my Coffee Master experience I probably enjoy Tea just as much as Coffee. It is so great to see that the company has elevated and expanded on this important aspect of our business. My favorite teas are Green (Westlake Dragonwell) and Oolong (Ti Kwan Yin). Would love to have one of those cool Tazo gift cards btw!!

Thanks and happy new year!
The Tazo store looks pretty great. I’ve always liked the Tazo brand
So I shared this blog entry on my Facebook page. Curiously this blog entry has not shown up on your Facebook page yet, though I did find it in e-mail.
Thanks for the “refresher” on Tazo Tea.
Experiencing a real tea store (not just your regular Starbucks coffee shop) is quite enlightening to the uninitiated. Tea has an interesting history and (not to minimize a Coffee Master) the Tea Master is a person to respect. Can lead you on some interesting journeys of taste.
So I toast a Happy New Year to you all as I start my day calmly with a mug of Zen.
Hopefully one day a Tazo store will open up in Canada! I am a tea and coffee lover and so excited for the chance to win a card. Thanks Melody! 🙂 I repinned an old Tazo ad that is just so cute!
Melody this followup blog post on the Tazo store is beyond cool. I am so jealous that they have this tea tasting and the way they offered it to the customer. It seems like all the partners at this store are really into tea. Bring one near me please!!!! Happy new year to everyone!
Hi Melody! Thanks for another great give away. I shared this blog post to my Facebook wall. I like the idea of the flavored sugars. I do prefer coffee or soda over tea most of the time, except when it comes to iced chai tea lattes. Tea is like wine for me, something that sounds interesting in theory, but is unable to meet my personal taste preferences.
Hi Melody, I would love to win one of these unique cards (it would be one of a kind here in Vancouver)! My favourite tea is a matcha green tea latte, but I like other teas as well. (I am waiting for the Joy tea to go on sale at a local Starbucks.)
As for coffee, I am not a brewed coffee fan at all, but I like my lattes (preferably a Cinnamon Dolce Latte). Thanks for your blog and this great contest. I will retweet and share on facebook.
So many great comments! Everyone above is entered obviously. I can’t respond to all the comments, but I’m glad others find this as fun as I do. Love that you can have a tea adventure at this store.
omg as a brista I love the tea the Earl Grey is my fav love a card to
You know, I’d love for Starbucks to do some test run stuff on the East Coast. I would love to see the new Tazo store (although I’m not so much a tea person as a coffee person), but Seattle is FAR!
Anyway I’m retweeting you (@NotAnotherTW).
I am really jealous of the Tazo tea store! Living in AL, I doubt I will see this anytime soon. However, I love learning about it on your blog! I shared this on pinterest!
Great article! I wish a tea store would open somewhere close to me- New Orleans or Baton Rouge. I’ll share this article with my facebook friends.
Hello Melody! Love your blog ~ So hoping I win one of these cards! I drink a Tazo Chai everyday! Addicted! ;0) (I also tweeted this blog post!)
I have a few flavors of Tazo tea at home. My husband and I have tea each morning especially in the Winter months–such a warm and soothing drink.
I’d love to visit a store like that! I wish there was one in my area! Thanks for sharing your experience!
You’re very generous to have another giveaway!
Oh, and I’ll definitely retweet you!
I love Awake and Chai teas by Tazo. Thanks for the giveaway and happy new year!
I absolutely love tea and I greatly enjoy reading your blog. I shared this on FB.
I’ve never been in a Tazo store, but I love the teas! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Melody!
That looks like an awesome store to visit! I wonder what will happen with the Tazo stores with the acquisition of Teavana. Should be interesting to see it play out in 2013!
Happy New Year! I’ll post another time how I’ve shared this for the giveaway. I hope you get to go to a Tea tasting there since it seems right up your alley!
Happy New Year to everyone…..especially all the ‘regulars’! (@Melody: amazing what a giveaway will do! ha. )
I hope they would release these Tazo Stores in Europe as well…I think there must be an amazingly magic smell inside the Tazo Stores. Do Starbucks partners get their discount their as well?
This looks like a lovely store. I would love to visit one someday. 🙂
Thanks for the mini virtual tour!!! I can’t wait for my next trip to Seattle so I can soak in all the tazo goodness. The madelines sound divine!
@Denise (and anyone) – I have been doing about one giveaway every month, which is truly the most that I can do. I realize that the effort (and money) for a giveaway is too much to do it more than that. (If only I could JUST do this blog and not work 40 hours a week, but I shouldn’t wish that given how precarious my employment situation is).
I notice that I have a group of fairly regular commenters, and a second group that regularly comes out once a month for a giveaway. I really hope two things happen each time I do a giveaway – that some lurkers will start regularly joining in the conversation (or regular names from the past -now sorely missed- will be back) and/or that some people will be encouraged to subscribe or “like” which, in the long run anyways, will help the blog. And then every giveaway brings out some people that we’ve never seen before, who have only lurked – and it is fun to see brand new names and comments too. I really am super thankful for those who comment often!! You’re creating great conversations.
Melody, Denise, all the regulars and everyone- Happy new year to you. Somewhat dreary day here but pretty warm. Happy 2013! It is interesting how people come out with comments for a giveaway and then go back in hiding for the rest of the blog posts. I learn so much from these posts and to this day I still find I tend to know a bit more than the partners and SM at my local store. Thank you again Melody for all your work on this blog and I look forward to many blog posts in 2013. And to hopefully a Tazo store opening near me too!
@Purple1 – I have that problem at times. I’m sometimes surprised how little some partners know about things that Starbucks is doing. Without a doubt, those partners who know the most seem to be the ones who will take some time to be online learning about their brand. That was one of the reasons I did this article: http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2012/12/20/up-to-date-starbucks-news/ – I can’t expect that every partner is going to like this blog at all! It just doesn’t work that way – Some people don’t like this blog (you just can’t please everyone). But, I hoped to give people (both partners and customers!) some good ideas on how to keep up with Starbucks news and updates with that article – http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2012/12/20/up-to-date-starbucks-news/
Thanks for all of the updates you do! It looks like you’ve already seen I re-tweeted your post yesterday. I’m looking forward to head down to U-Village and the Tazo store today 🙂

By the way, thank you for the many great comments about the store, and to those who like my blog so much! It keeps me going! 🙂
There’s still plenty of time for more entries, but that’s where we’re at right now. Of course, as I start posting new articles, the number of entries will slow down because lots of people only read above the fold of a page.
Thanks for organizing another giveaway; I have tweeted your article here: https://twitter.com/brianchow/status/286203399635087361
Thanks!
Hi Melody,
I retweeted your twitter post, “Embrace the Warmth of Starbucks Christmas Blend.” Starbucks Christmas blend is my favorite coffee. I bought five bags this season! I hope, I linked your blog correctly!

I’m really excited to see what is going to happen to the TAZO line now that Starbucks has bought Teavana, I will be really excited to expand my tea knowledge!
I freely admit that I’m a lurker. I subscribe to this blog, but I rarely comment. I read all the posts via email, and I enjoy the passion that Melody has for everything Starbucks. However, I usually only leave comments on the give aways because I like free stuff as much as I like this blog (which is a lot!). I’m not a partner, I don’t really like coffee, and I don’t have a lot of time (I have a toddler). I prefer engaging on Twitter when I can. These are my reasons for not posting frequently, but by no means is it an apology. I am who I am. (This is not directed towards Melody, but to the people leaving comments about how some people only comment on give away posts. I know these comments weren’t directed to me personally, but I felt the need to speak up for lurkers everywhere.) Melody, I hope you continue to do your give aways. They are always fun.
@ensanguin – Well you are certainly not alone! For every one natural comment on a blog, that blog may have gotten between 75 and 200 visitors. My own numbers bear out that most people lurk. Sometimes people use the “contact me” form and send me really great emails with their thoughts on the articles, and that makes my day too. I am happy with having many many lurkers. I sometimes wish I knew who they were though. My goal (well, one of several goals) generally speaking is to have an impact: whether that is to make customers feel good, inform customers, inspire partners, or even create change at the headquarters based on what was read here.
By the way, I love your comments too, and appreciate them even if I haven’t replied to you always. As for the giveaways, I have settled into a routine of roughly one per month, and I’ll keep that going for a while… unless something changes with my employment situation.
I sort of wish Starbucks would just pay me to produce this blog, but that would remove any kind of authenticity. An employee can’t easily write things like “The chocolates get two thumbs down.” (That was in the holiday treat article).
I have rambled! Just ignore this ramble!
Entries so far – I know from experience that since this is no longer the lead article, entries will slow down drastically now. Could mean great odds of winning! LOL

I’ve always wanted to try the calm tea! I really enjoy tazo passion fruit tea! I shared your starbucks meg collection post on google+!
I found your via pinterest and repinned a few of your pins! I love Tazo Teas!
I’d go in the store and ooh and ahh over the things inside and try the food offerings. I’d be so intimidated on what teas to try though. Coffee is my first love, but if there was anywhere to learn more about tea and try one I would like more than chai….this is it! Thanks for the peek inside!
@Melody – Well, now you know at least one lurker for sure. I started following you on Twitter way back when, and that’s how I found your blog. You’ve definitely had an impact on me. You once sent me a free key chain, and as an apology for it being “late”*, included a pre-loaded Pike Place card. You also included a personal note. I still have all of those items, and I’m still excited to show off my key chain (which is very dirty, lol), and my Pike Place card. Several of my local partners have even commented on it! You have a great way of connecting with people. I’m just sorry that some of those people are hit-or-miss like I am. 🙂
I think it’s a terrible idea for Starbucks to pay you to blog (even though I know why you said it). I truly hope more people start using that “donate” button to help buy you more coffee (and more stuff for your give aways!)
*a) I thought it was funny that you included the pre-loaded card for being “late” on sending me something for free. There’s no way I could complain. b) I remember that your laptop or pc was down at the time and you were running your blog from your phone, including sending out 25 of the key chains. (Is my memory right?) That must have been a pain!
Wow. You have quite a memory. I did have a period where my computer was down – I think I had a very old net book that I was trying to write articles on, but I had no way to manage images really (no photoshop to even resize them), and as I recall, I slowed down, and wrote articles with no images. Eventually, my friend Elly fixed my computer. She does comment on this site now and then. She is a super nice person!
I don’t want to belabor this point, but I have definitely learned that when you have a blog, it’s like walking around with a megaphone in your right hand. Just as I’ve had people tell me that they love my blog, and can tell you of a few incidents where I’ve pissed people off. You can’t make everyone happy!
To be totally honest, I just worry a lot right now. I love my job. I’ve been there 6 years. I’ve gotten through life by borrowing money – I borrowed a huge amount to go to law school in San Francisco. And obviously, I pay for the roof over my head. I don’t have a car at this time because it’s just not on my list of priorities right now. Anyways, in six months King County will be taking over the agency where I work. The place where I work will somewhat dissolve away. So it feels scary. I might be fine. I might continue on as a County Employee. But there is a risk that I won’t because of the kind of work I’m doing at the moment. (I work in a city court). Anyways, truly, I don’t know what will happen. I don’t know. But I can’t help but worry a little: that’s who I am. So it’s very easy to dream about the idea that maybe Starbucks could just pay me to do this: Run around eating food, drinking coffee, writing about stores … and getting paid a nice salary. Obviously, that is total fantasy land. I’m a bit of a dreamer! But yeah, if Starbucks paid me, I’d never be able to say things like “I thought Veranda was boring” or “I don’t like the new packaging on the whole bean bags.” Or “The holiday chocolates weren’t very good.” Or, you name it … the times I’ve written things that probably made somebody at the SSC wince. My huge apologies for the ramble. Please disregard!
A partner just showed me your website and I love it! I am a tea and coffee lover and so excited for not just your website but a chance to win a card. Thanks Melody! I re-tweeted this article.
