Today marks the official launch of the 2014 holiday season at Starbucks. There are so many things to mention, it’s hard to know where to start!
CHESTNUT PRALINE LATTE:
Today marks the official first day of the new Starbucks holiday beverage: the Chestnut Praline Latte. While the drink had a “soft launch” (meaning that it was not advertised but available upon request) as of November 8th, today is the firm start of the all-new seasonal beverage.
It’s absolutely delicious. You can get it hot, iced, or as a Frappuccino. I’ve always said that Starbucks is the king of delicious drink toppings and this is no exception. It’s not too sweet either, which is nice.
CHRISTMAS BLEND AND HOLIDAY BLEND:
Christmas Blend and Holiday Blend have arrived in stores. (You’ll also find whole bean Espresso Roast Christmas Blend in Starbucks stores, which is a darker roast version of Christmas Blend).
To eliminate confusion, I want to simply state that Christmas Blend and Holiday Blend are NOT the same coffee. I’ve overheard many partners telling customers that Holiday Blend is Christmas Blend in different packaging. That simply is bad information. I think I know where that comes from: I think many many years ago, Starbucks did repackage Christmas Blend as Holiday Blend but that is not the case now.
Christmas Blend has been a consistent favorite for 30 years, and its hallmark is the spicy aged Sumatra coffee beans. Notice that StarbucksStore.com describes Christmas Blend as a dark roast blend of “lively Latin American beans, mellow Indonesian coffees, and rare aged Sumatra.” It is “full bodied and bold,” and “spicy and sweet.”
Holiday Blend is a “balanced blend of coffees from Latin America and Indonesia, layered with herbal and sweet maple notes.” Notice that it does NOT have aged Sumatra beans in it. This makes a dramatic difference in how it will taste. It won’t have the spicy flavor that is the cornerstone of Christmas Blend. Holiday Blend is a medium roast coffee described as “balanced, smooth, and rich.”
Holiday Blend might not be found at smaller Starbucks locations.
Christmas Blend is one of my favorites and this year’s is absolutely delicious. It’s great from the Clover brewer, and the Espresso Roast Christmas Blend makes a great shot of coffee. I admit, I definitely buy the Verismo version of Christmas Blend every year too.
Please don’t get tripped up thinking the two coffees are the same. 🙂
(I am enjoying a Clover-brewed Christmas Blend right now as I write this. Delicious. Not too spicy but incredibly bold and flavorful. Best year for Christmas Blend in years, and I happen to particularly like this year’s made via the Clover.)
LOTS OF NEW STARBUCKS CARDS:
There are so many new Starbucks cards that I don’t know where to start.
One thing to point out is the beautiful mini sterling silver Starbucks card. Each (company-operated) store received a small supply of them. These little cards are $200 each and will be activated with $50 on it.
The actual cards are kept behind the counter, so you’ll have to ask your local barista if they have them available for purchase. These were briefly online at StarbucksStore.com but quickly sold out online.
At the register area of every Starbucks, there are small number of this year’s “core” Starbucks holiday cards, which should easily be found at Starbucks stores everywhere.
Many stores received an extra selection of cards. There were two different displays sent to stores: a display of 33 new cards and a display of 99 new cards (which includes the same cards in the display of 33 cards). You might find something like this at your local store:
NEW MUGS: (The Dot Collection)
There are an overwhelming number of new mugs. From what I’ve heard, each of the 99 cards has a corresponding mug or tumbler to pair it with, though I’m not convinced that there are matches for all the cards to tumblers. There are some matches though. Look for signs for the “Dot Collection.”
IGNITE THE WARMTH:
Even the pastry bags get a holiday look this year. I particularly like this year’s pastry bags. They say “Ignite the Warmth” on them. In 1998, the Starbucks store holiday theme for Christmas Blend was “Embrace the Warmth.” I think “Ignite the Warmth” is a nice modernization of that. Though it’s quite possible that the current designers of the pastry sacks weren’t thinking about 1998 at all, but I still like it and want to point it out.
PEPPERMINT BARK and PEPPERMINT COOKIE CHOCOLATE BITES:
You’ll find little treats in stores called Peppermint Bark, and separately, there are tubes of little Peppermint Cookie Chocolate Bites.
Every year these tend to be surprisingly delicious little treats, and this year doesn’t disappoint. The Peppermint Cookie Bites have the right amount of crunch and a lot of peppermint flavor. I feel like the Peppermint Bark changes a little from year to year, and this year’s tastes a bit like a white chocolate candy cane. In fact, it appears to be a mix of milk chocolate, white chocolate, peppermint flavors, and candy cane shaves atop it. I’m sure none of this is good for my waistline, but then most of the holiday season is bad for the American waistline.
HOLIDAY REUSABLE 2 DOLLAR CUP:
If you use one of the plastic, reusable cups, you can now get a seasonal version of it, for two dollars. The $1 plastic reusable Starbucks cup was first introduced in the fall of 2012, and has been so successful that it is still offered.
Starbucks offers a ten cent discount on your beverages when you bring your own cup. There official policy is that there is no cup discount when you use the store’s for-here ware (though I’m aware that some baristas will give the ten cent discount to customers, nonetheless.) And there is no discount when you’re buying ready-to-drink beverages from the cold case in the store.
That’s it for now! I have highlighted some things you’ll find inside Starbucks stores right now. I will end up writing about the holiday offerings again soon – I still have to talk about the special holiday food too!
Please weigh in!
If you have not done so already, please enter your email address in the side column and subscribe. Another great gift idea is the book Tales of the Siren: A StarbucksMelody – it’s a must read for any true fan of Starbucks. Intended to be light-hearted and a little silly, Tales of the Siren demonstrates how Starbucks is in the “people business serving coffee.” Hope you’ll read it!

The new mugs are gorgeous and impossible to choose! Speaking of… I kind of freaked out when I went into the store today and saw ALL of those gift cards!!!! I wanted to take one of each for my collection, but felt that would be a bit… well…inappropriate. Which brings me to the question – what IS the policy on picking up gift cards just for one’s collection? I’ve never given it much thought for the one or two by the register, but all of those???? Would it be okay to take one of each that I like? Do you know?
@Kat – There isn’t a strict rule, but I’m sure it IS strongly encouraged to activate each card with $5 on it. I suspect that when you’re dealing with the core cards – which are easily replenished and not nearly so collectible – you could ask a barista for one or two without activating it with $5. However, in case like this where the cards will be gone super fast if people just take them, I’m sure stores are hugely frowning on that.
In fact, I was a little amazed that the cards weren’t behind the counter. That display is very inviting for people to just grab them – I suspect that some people don’t know you’re supposed to activate them (there’s no bold sign that says “do not take without activating”) and I suspect that some people know and just take without activating or asking, which will be problem in this case – the cards will be gone super fast.
My sister, who lives in Vancouver, said that some of the stores there seem to have had issues with theft. One had an ‘Ask a Barista to see the cards’ type note and another was only putting a few of each design out and keeping the rest of the stock in the back.
It doesn’t seem to be as much an issue where I live (Calgary), but the displays *are* starting to get picked over now. However, the only store I’ve seen with the 99 display still seems to have 80-90% of the designs as of today (the alphabet ones seemed least picked over). The ‘Winking Owl’ & ‘Fox’ cards seem to be favorites.
Thanks for the information. I’ve long wondered about that. I will definitely just go with my favs, then and activate them. It’s a shame to read about people taking them to make a profit. Though, I can’t say I’m surprised.
melody,
I live in Renton as well work by Madison street in Seattle. I haven’t located one of the 99 display. Even the employees at my starbucks don’t know where they are. I checked out the ones they thought but no luck. I was trying to buy some of the letters for Christmas presents. Do you know where I would find one?
Thanks, rich
In Canada we got the cards early, on nov 3rd. By nov 5th, the display of 99 cards at my local Starbucks were completely depleted. I’m glad I went on the first day and actually spent just a little over an hour and activated all 106 cards (99+6 core +1 sterling silver). It got pricey!

I arrived at my local store at opening with the plan to legitimately purchase 10 at a time, reload the money back on to my card, wash rinse, repeat until all cards were acquired. Since I don’t believe in taking without asking or activating, and only collect for myself (not to make money) I figured this would be my best way to acquire all cards on the up and up without spending $500. When the barrista saw what I was up to, she askef how long I’ve been collecting (12 years), and what I planned to do with the cards. She then activated the first 10 and told me to take the rest. I didn’t complain.

Some of those Tumblers are really cool looking. However….. I dislike this time of year at Starbucks, and I can tell already this year is going to be worse. Space!!!!! The store I frequent doesn’t have space. Yesterday as I walked in the door, I had to walk through a maze of boxes to get to the counter. The boxes were even in the foyer and blocking a door. This isn’t temporary either. These boxes will remain until it’s sold or used.
Although this store has little storage space, all the whole bean coffee had to be removed to make space for the Tumblers. The card rack is now sandwiched between those boxes and the windows. The tables in this area had to be removed. This is a very busy Clover store, and they can’t afford to give up tables for storage space either. I think this practice of storing boxes in the customer area is just ridiculous. It is so ridiculous, that it takes away from the Holiday feel and the purpose of these displays by severely cluttering up the rest of the store.
This is the store Melody and Denise visited after a remodel and discussed on here. This store is slated to become an Evenings Store. If they don’t have the space now, how are they going to pull that off? Seriously! These boxes will remain all over the place until Christmas. Much of the stuff in the boxes, are the rest of the stock/inventory that has been displaced by the whole bean coffee to make room for the Holiday displays. Does Corporate have any idea this is going on? Because this goes on at many local Starbucks, but this store is worse. So much for ruining that Holiday charm.
Some people are selling the full set of cards on eBay. I’m tempted as we didn’t get any of these in the UK. With regards the cards and mugs is it possible there are simply too many? Do many stores sell the full selection of both?
I’m liking the gift card collection, and I picked up 7 yesterday on release day in the U.S.: Vespa 2014, Tradition 2014, Pour-Press-Serve, Fox in Woods, Letter W, Village, and Mermaid. I activated each with $5, and will add these to my card rotation (all are registered, and I use the physical cards in store). This year’s Snowman release is not for me, but I think it will be popular, as will the Fox in Woods card, and the Vespa re-release should hold some intrigue for long-time collectors.
At times while building my collection, I’ve taken one or two designs from the store without activating, then activated a day or two later when I had the cash.
I do notice a lot of new/unactivated cards on online auction sites, including full sets of the 99-card collection and folks who show 30+ of a single card design available. Clearly, people are raiding local stores for cards and selling them for small profit. I wish that wouldn’t happen, but I don’t think it’d be good to put all the cards behind the counter (Sterling Silver obviously makes sense) and put the onus on the Partners to control the release of cards. In my local stores, I’ve never had them run out of a card that I wanted, so I suppose the online resellers are limited in number.
All in all, I think the card collection will be hugely popular, and help Starbucks capitalize on the momentum of last season’s record-setting gift card sales. The mug collection should also help to drive store traffic and encourage whole bean purchases as tag-along gifts to go with the mugs. It seems to me that these will be popular with customers, but are also part of a larger strategic plan.
I am really enjoying seeing the new cards at the card display. I wish some of them would be available all year long. The sterling silver card at my local store is kept in their safe from what I understand and some customers have asked for it. I think the mugs are really nice too.
I look forward to your holiday post each year and this one is definitely a favorite! I’ve yet to visit a store to view all the new merchandise, but oh my goodness, those tumblers are calling my name and I must resist the urge to buy one. Usually I purchase a Starbucks Christmas mug each year, however about a month before this post, I convinced myself that the mugs in my cabinet didn’t need a new member. So of course this would be the year Starbucks releases not one, not three, but a gazillion tumblers to test my resolve. Must. Resist. Ha! 🙂
The Chestnut Praline latte sounds yummy…I’ll try that and the Chai Eggnog latte drink mixture I’ve heard some people rave about lately.
What?
No collection of holiday music being offered @ Starbucks this year? Buying the new one each year has become a holiday tradition with my family… Say it isn’t so! : (
Hi,
I notice that Costco sells the Winter Blend. Is Winter Blend a different blend from the Christmas and Holiday Blends?
Are all stores only selling the Christmas Blend in 8 ounce bags this year? The store I just went into only had it in the 8 ounce bags and they said they weren’t going to have 1lb bags this year. Has anyone else noticed this?
I see on the starbucks store website they have it in 1lb bags.
I bought one of the new reusable cups as they are really pretty and I like sharing it with my daughter for our to go beverages from home too. I bought a box of the K-cups Christmas Blend but was disappointed they didn’t have the Espresso Roast Christmas Blend in K-cups. So frustrating!
@Brian – That’s a very good question about Winter Blend. I’ll have to research that.
@Derek – Yes – this is the first year that there are no one pound bags of Christmas Blend! It’s all the half-pound bags inside the actual stores.
I have more to reply to – Thank you to everyone who commented.
That’s disappointing though I can see why from a business perspective. It seems like every year all the stores after Christmas are literally giving away the one pound bags with the BOGO offers.
i didn’t see this mentioned. Please tell me that they have the ceramic versions of their red cups. I have been collecting these since 2009 and would be super bummed to learn that they’re not carrying them anymore.
re: ceramic red cups.
I think there is a 12 ounce ceramic tumbler, a 16 ounce mug, a 12 ounce mug, and a tasting cup…all ceramic red cups. However the latter two are only in gift sets.
The Chestnut Praline Latte is delicious! I like that it’s not overly sweet. I also picked up a Night Owl card because the design was so cute.
To comment about the half pound bags, if you purchase two of them, the barista will give you both for the price of a 1 pound bag. I believe they have to be the same type of roast, but I will have to double check on that.
Also, during this time, the stores are filled with tons of extra boxes and people. However, Starbucks is very smart in that it doesn’t build a store for just one season. Much like churches don’t build a sanctuary to accommodate the Easter/Christmas services, Starbucks doesn’t lease space that it will not use for the majority of the time. So although it may seem a struggle to go through the maze of people, boxes, and merchandise, it is only for a short while.
Looks like I need to give the kids my Christmas requests for coffee and mugs!

I saw the gift card stand at the Factoria store yesterday. It was a bit overwhelming and I tried take a picture of them. It is a high traffic store due to T-mobile HQ and other businesses around, I wonder how many people will just take them without putting money on them. On the other hand, I didn’t know the limited edition Starbucks card. No email for previous limited edition card holder?
Yeah gifts cards have been an issue of people taking and trading. When I went to the Philippines and even the la Boulange restaurant in Los Angeles, CA, the gifts are behind the counter. I think next year if Starbucks decides to do a lot of gift cards. I think putting behind the counter is a good way to make sure that the cards are being activated
@Josh – Respectfully I must disagree regarding the boxes. Boxes are no longer just a Holiday inconvenience at some stores here, and namely one! The Holiday boxes last year……. Cluttered up this store until the Holidays were over. Boxes are becoming the norm. Starbucks continues to expand, but not the size of their stores.
The problem……. Sure the Holiday stuff will leave their boxes and end up on display or some shelf. But as I said, it will displace everything else that is normally in those spots. So now what happens, is that every box of cups (paper) lids, napkins, sugar, syrup, straws, whole bean coffee (core), toilet paper etc. etc. has nowhere to be stored. The floor and the customer area becomes storage. That isn’t very smart. I once discussed this at msi, but it was just a waste of time.
If this store does actually turn into an Evenings Store, how will they make the room for the added inventory for the menu and stuff they sell at those stores? Because as you said, they only have stores for the space they need, which I understand, but disagree because it leaves no room for their expanding ideas and plans. If they only lease so much space, then how do they turn a store into an Evenings Store, without addressing storage. The store I’m speaking of, does indeed have a storage problem 365 days a year now.
I’m interested in the sterling silver keychain but $150 is quite a bit for what is essentially a novelty!
Does anyone know if the Christmas Bearista Bear will be out again this year? Gotten them for my family 5 years running but no stores seem to have them this year.
Thanks
Chgo. the issue of space has been a real ongoing problem at my local SB and even though they have a storage area in the basement, there are always boxes all over the store. In fact, there are times they say one of the bathrooms is out of order because they put the boxes in there for storage.
Does anyone know how many Starbucks 2014 gold Are You Here Ornaments? and Where are they from?
I believe there are 10 ornaments – Chicago, California, Seattle, Pike Place, Hawaii, Florida, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Washington D.C. There are also full sized Hawaii and Pike Place Market You Are Here mugs in the style of the ornaments (gold and white).
Happy hunting!
@Jerome – There is no US bearista bear this year. I think there are still some international versions in the China-Asia-Pacific markets.
@Maria – I’ve heard that the 2014 You Are Here ornaments are only in these designs:
Hawaii, Los Angeles, San Fran, California, Seattle, Pike Place Market, Chicago, NYC, DC and Florida
@Melody – I’m sorry for the Debbie Downer like comments here. Although I do believe that Starbucks starts too early with the Holiday look and merchandise, I do enjoy enjoy the Holiday atmosphere. I’m just really peeved that Starbucks continues to ruin it for some customers, at some stores with the boxes. Taking away the much needed seating for these boxes is also a disappointment.
I’m glad somebody like purple1 backs me up on this. I believe purple1 has backed me up on this before – 😉 It defeats the purpose of decorating the store, only to ruin it all with box clutter stacked to the ceiling. I can’t blame the Partners, because I know they just don’t have the room. They do the best with what is available. But somebody higher up the chain needs to address it.! I too would just like to appreciate the atmosphere.
@purple1 – If they are stacking inventory (especially consumables) in a bathroom, that is just plain wrong on every level. Washrooms are the most neglected areas of stores these days. And I’m not even a germaphobe.
I love the Holiday Promotion. It’s my favorite part of the year at Starbucks. This is my third holiday setup and the most daunting. Unwrapping over 100+ mugs took a long time. I felt like a shoe salesman at JCPenney with all of the boxes.
The gift card rack is pretty amazing too. Unfortunately, because it’s double-sided, there aren’t a lot of places to display the rack in the store that doesn’t create a huge traffic-flow problem. However, I think a lot of the cards are very pretty and I can’t wait to grab some! I agree with those above re: taking vs. purchasing cards. I think you should activate the cards that you get. Otherwise, it’s just theft. It also hurt my heart when I started cruising eBay right before the set happened and there were already tons of merchandise available that shouldn’t be. It makes me wonder if sellers are claiming to already have these items and get a jump start on it or if there are partners and other vendors who have already helped themselves to the merchandise.
I’m so sad the Bearista Bear did not return. I have both from my previous two holidays and I wanted a third little buddy for them. The ones I’ve seen for the CAP market are cute though.
@Purple1 and @Chcgo – At least for the last few years, the hard holiday launch has come in November – This year’s was about one week later than some others because Starbucks waited until after Veteran’s Day. I know there is always a time during the month before the holiday set, that there are boxes in the cafe. But by the time you get to now, there should be boxes in the cafe. Even small stores around me look great. I agree that boxes should not go in the bathroom! But Starbucks has had boxes in their cafes for years. The stores are getting larger! Early stores were tiny spots and as larger nearby spaces open up, Starbucks is moving into bigger sites, when available. This is what I mean:
http://starbucksmelody.com/2012/05/06/the-ballard-clover-starbucks-one-of-the-best-in-seattle-store-review/
Maybe it’s less of an issue here because there are so many Starbucks around me, all taking seat space pressure off one another. I can see that if you get to a Starbucks and find that there’s no place to sit because of boxes blocking seats, that would be disappointing.
@Claire – I was surprised no Bearista Bear this year. Maybe next year? There’s no way they’ll do the same thing twice with the cards and dot collection, so maybe next year we’ll get the return of more traditional merchandise??
@Melody Personally, I think it’d be easier to keep the card rack for the coming years but switch back to a more traditional merchandise set in the future. 100 cups and 100 cards is a lot for customers and partners to get used to. And if this gift card thing takes off, I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t continue. But what are we gonna do with the 20 styles of cups and mugs that don’t sell? (And I say that with real concern. I am genuinely worried about storage space for this stuff as the holidays ramp down.)
I also really really really really really really want to see us start using a card recycling program. I tweeted something to the partners account about it and even suggested it on MSI a year ago. Never got an answer I was happy with. There are over 100 different designs of cards out there in the US market right now and most stores got at least 20 of each type of card……that’s a lot of cards that will eventually end up in a trash can. Not everyone is a card hoarder like me. I throw away so many cards every day and it’s my biggest (and only) complaint about Starbucks. I want to see this happen.
@Claire – I assume at the end of this year, there’s going to be quite a sale on mugs and tumblers! LOL.
From the 99 collectible cards, I’d imagine that they’ll be gone. There will be no storage issue. The core holiday cards – maybe you’ll go through them all. It’s amazing how many cards get activated this time of year. What worries me about the 99 collectible cards is that really they’re not being gifted around. I guess I shouldn’t worry about that. Starbucks knows that there are a HUGE number of card collectors out there. Still, there is something that I can’t put my finger on that is a little off about the set of 99 – just seems like the percentage that will be gifted to others might be small.
Regarding the 8 oz bags of Christmas Blend, (my favorite blend, with the Anniversary a close second), my local Starbucks would only sell me ONE 8 oz bag ??
What is up with that ??
I was then told that the Christmas Blend has not been a good seller the past few years, so it would only be offered in the 8 oz size bag and that only ONE bag per customer would be allowed. I went to the back of the line to buy another bag. The same partner was at the register and refused to sell me a second bag. How can the sales numbers go up on one of the most enjoyable blends that Starbucks offers on a seasonal basis if I can only buy one bag ?? Is this the official Starbucks policy, or is this a mis-informed partner ??
curious (and frustrated) in costa mesa…
@Jeff from Costa Mesa – That is crazy. That has to be a totally misinformed partner. Email me as much detail as possible – which store, what happened, the partner name if possible, when this happened, and I’ll try to forward it to someone who can take action. Thanks.
@Jeff – FYI…… You should have demanded a talk with the SM or Shift.
Does anyone know if Starbucks will offer the holiday refillable tumbler again this year? Last year it was valid for a month of free lattes in January!! I think it was about $69
How funny – I came here to ask EXACTLY this same question! Last year I scored my tumbler for 70% off at a TargetBucks and you can bet I used it every single day. (I actually still use it – it was a really nice tumbler, even though the design on the outside has long since washed off…) Anyone know?
I actually spotted the Coffee Refill Tumbler for 2015 at a Target the other day. It was $30. I don’t think they were supposed to be out as none of the other Targets I went to had them out already. I bought it because I couldn’t wait for Black Friday (which is the date I think they were both released last year). It’s pretty cute. It has the numbered design like last year overlaying a design of holly berries.
You’re referring to the Espresso Refill Tumbler, which I haven’t spotted yet.

“…the company is also selling its 16-ounce tumbler for $30, and offering one free medium-sized coffee per day for the month of January 2015. “
Finally went to check out merchandise and the cards at my local store. I had been dreading how packed it would be with so many cups and tumblers. But to my surprise this store is not carrying any of the dot collection and only has the display for 33 cards. I actually only saw one new tumbler and it was the verismo one. No holiday ornaments or the annual red cup mugs. There was a very small display of the holiday coffees. So strange. The other store I go to sometimes is getting a remodel and is closed. They are however serving beverages from a truck parked outside the store.
Hello..
Have people noticed if/when all the 99 gift cards were taken/ran out at their respective stores. I am in southern california. The promotion now is about two weeks old and basically all the cards are gone. Wondering if they will have a refill period especially with the lifetime of free starbucks promotion going on.
@SamChoi – I’ve noticed that the stores that I go to that have the cards aren’t quite out yet – but depleted down to maybe 25% of them still left. I’ve always heard there are no replenishment coming in for those cards. At the end of the day, I think the situation does create a problem of 99 collectible cards which will be valuable as just being one of the 99, whether or not there is money on that card.
I suppose it is a toss up re the availability of these cards because around here I am still seeing a significant amount of these cards in the rack display. I know every region has a different marketability of these cards and I would be curious in the end to see which area sold the most. I certainly like many of these cards and wish some of them would be available all year round.
Hi,
Are the 99 cards coming to San Francisco Bay Area? I have been looking at the stores in downtown and don’t have any luck. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
