I’m going to give away one 4 ounce bag of Whiskey Barrel-Aged Sulawesi. It is a thing. Wow. Starbucks officially released this coffee on Monday, March 6, 2017. It will blow you away. I’ve brewed it at home. I’ve ordered the Con Crema drink, and I’ve had it as the cold brew. I strongly recommend that you read this article here for the details.
Shortly after its release, I received a few Facebook messages with people asking me if I could secure them any of this coffee. Yesterday, Thursday March 9, 2017, I stopped by the Roastery on my way home from work thinking I’d buy some coffee – I wanted more for myself at home, plus I decided I would mail it off to a few people. It was sold out. I had several Roastery partners tell me that yesterday, the Roastery sold their entire week’s worth in one day. I heard that I should come back on Friday (today), as they were trying to get more.
Today, at 7:15 AM, I dropped by the Roastery on my way to work. There was a crowd of people at the scoop bar, and one partner trying to get all their orders for the Whiskey Barrel-Aged Sulawesi. I have been visiting the Roastery since before it opened. I have never seen a crowd at the scoop bar in the early morning.
So today, I bought a little more. I bought some for myself for home, a little to send, and I have one single extra 4 ounce bag of it. This is NOT in Flavorlock packaging, so it needs to be consumed quickly.
How to enter this giveaway:
I’m going to do a super quick giveaway. I can’t imagine that very many people will enter, but here’s what you will win, if you are chosen (at random) as the winner. The winner will receive the pictured beautiful bag of Sulawesi, plus one $15.00 Starbucks Roastery card. Leave a comment below. Tell me why you want this coffee, or tell me what your favorite whole bean coffee at Starbucks is. You have less than 24 hours to enter. I have to get this in the mail because it is a perishable item. You must leave a comment before 6:30 PM on Saturday, March 11, 2017, Pacific Standard Time. If you win, you assume all the risks of consuming a perishable item. Only one entry per person. You must be over the age of 18 to enter. You must have an address inside the United States – no FPOs or APOs. (The puzzle in the background of the photo is not included in the giveaway). The winner will be selected at random. I’m going to write all the names on little cards, throw them into a Starbucks bag, and draw one at random. Your comment has to be meaningful. You can’t just write, “I’m writing this because you told me to leave a comment.” I am the sole decision maker of whether you left meaningful comment. Please enter with a real email address, because I will contact you via email if you win. If you fail to respond to my attempts to reach you, you forfeit any prize. I will update this article at the bottom with the winner, and send an email. You have exactly two weeks from March 11, 2017, to claim your prize, otherwise it’s forfeited and I just keep it. If you win, brew this coffee as soon as possible. The freshness standard for coffee NOT in Flavorlock packaging is only 7 days. Again, I am not at fault or at risk if you choose to brew coffee you’ve kept hanging around your kitchen. You cannot preserve a coffee by putting it in the freezer.
Going back to my experience this morning, at the Roastery at 7:15 AM. I was in awe. I really was. I have heard stories of old of people lining up to get Christmas Blend upon its release, with such excitement over a whole bean. While I don’t personally remember that early era of Starbucks, as I saw the congregation of people swarming in on partner “LB,” I thought ‘Something right is happening here.’ It’s hard to explain but I thought back to the stories of old of people lining up for Christmas Blend or Anniversary Blend, and I thought it pretty cool that the Roastery can evoke some of that passion for a new coffee.
By the way, this evening on Facebook, I saw a comment from a Roastery partner who mentioned that today the Roastery sold out again of this whole bean. There’s a chance they won’t offer it again (or at least very, very, limited supplies) as a whole bean coffee because they have to conserve their supply for the beverages that use this coffee.
Again, if you need any background on this coffee, read this.
I know that a few readers collect the Reserve taster cards. You can use this website to see how your collection compares to the U.S. releases of Reserve taster cards.
There is one other Starbucks coffee that has a history related to whiskey: Do you know the true Caffè Verona story?
Congratulations Dave Peterson!

My favorite bean is still no. 11. Although, I had this con crema and it WAS amazing. It is definitely up there now!
(Please do NOT consider me for the drawing as I’ve had this and would like someone else to win!)
I would love to try this coffee with my partners at our store in New Orleans! I plan to use my Siphon and share with all my partners and customers! I am now a coffee master and hope to inspire more partners at my new store (90% green beans) to love and appreciate coffee as much as I do! Thanks for the opportunity!
I would love to win this coffee because my co-workers and I were discussing and drooling over this earlier this week. And we’re a bunch of blue-collar dudes working in a factory.
This coffee looks wonderful. Sulawesi had a wonderful flavor in its own, and I cannot wait to try it from an aged whisky barrel.
I was born and raised in Seattle but didn’t start working for Starbucks until I moved to Las Vegas and there were NO starbucks! I started in 1996 when we had 3 stores in vegas and less that 1000 stores total. I now live in Texas and have been a partner for over 20 years. I’m a huge coffee fan and my husband is a big whiskey fan. This is like a perfect coffee for both of us. Your posts about my hometown make me smile and bring back great memories.
I really want to try this coffee because whiskey and coffee are my two favorite drinks and this pairing of flavors sounds incredible.
I have been a Starbucks coffee fan for years, as you know. I would love to try this coffee because it sounds AMAZING. I have not been able to try any of the Roastery offerings or coffees ever, so getting to try this one would be super special for me. Thanks for your generosity in hosting this and giving us the chance.
I would love to try this coffee because it combines two of my favorite things: coffee and whisky. I’m a scotch guy.
Anywho, my favorite Starbucks coffee is Casi Cielo for both it’s flavor and it’s name.
Oh, WOW. My heart is aflutter with desire to brew this coffee, waft in a never experienced whisky-java scent, and sip and savor its delights! My favorite Starbucks roast has been, by far, the single origin Sulawesi bean; I even appreciated the distinctive orange, clean-set packaging with the tribal print. Why do I love Sulawesi? It’s full-bodied, sooooooo herbal, richly earthy with just a subtle spice. I would LOVE to try this. I’m intrigued with your description from March 7th that, “The Barrel Aged Sulawesi con Crema tastes like it has an Irish cream flavor to it! The cold brew has this light but distinctive Irish cream whiskey.” This sounds too distinctive to want to miss out on — I hope that I have the luck of the draw!
I would LOVE to win this for my husband. He loves anything barrel aged (we live in San Diego and barrel aged beer is all the rage amongst craft brewers.) and he loves coffee. I am pregnant with surrogate twins and he has been my rock throughout this whole process. This would be a great Thank You gift for him.
I think this particular giveaway will prove to be more popular than you think!
I just wanted to say I picked up a single origin sun dried Ethiopia sidamo today, based purely on the amazing aroma. I might try coating some of the beans in chocolate, if I can find some chocolate I deem good enough.
Should I save some for you? I can maybe make a sticker for you too, if you’re interested.
Wow. I would love to share this with my fellow partners. I know a few people at my store and a few others that would be so excited to try this. It sounds wonderful
My favorite whole bean coffee is Verona! I drink it everyday!
One of my favourite blends is House Blend. Back when I was a partner, I would make this in a press with the cinnamon coffee cake. Many people, were amazed with this simple pairing. I think that it is a bit darker than Pike Place. Sometimes the simple things in life are the best, not elaborate tastings.
My all time favorite coffee is Gold Coast because it has so many memories of me and my best friends adventure. Recently I just became a coffee master and I want to grow eventually getting out to the roastery! I want to share the knowledge and flavor this coffee has to my fellow partners!
My favorite Starbucks whole bean coffee is Aged Sumatra, either on its own or as part of the Christmas Reserve blend.
Thank you for getting in line so early in the morning for this!
(you know I’m in Canada but I do have a U.S. address you can ship to)
Oh man, I was planning on picking this coffee up at the roastery on Tuesday when my store heads down for a visit. Darn. I am leading a coffee tasting with my DM and RM Wednesday. Thank you for the opportunity to win.
My favorite coffee at the moment is the new Sun Dried Ethiopia Sidamo. I used to absolutely love Tribute Blend, but it has been MIA for the last two years. Those beautiful black cherry notes are heaven. Not to mention, the bag artwork is magical! Victor Melendez outdid himself.
I would love to win this to share with my team and 2 partners currently taking the coffee master journey. We saw this and were so excited by it and sad we couldn’t get any to try.
My favorite tried and true coffee is still Verona.
I would love this coffee for my DM. I had a partner trying to get this for me to give to my DM at the roastery yesterday and she couldn’t as they sold out before she got to work. My DM has been so supportive and has helped me succeed as a ASM to SM and she wanted this coffee so bad that this could be just one way of saying thank you for everything she has done in my success. Thank you
I would love this coffee so that I can do a roastery tasting with my partners. I would love to be able to bring not only the tastes from the roastery, but the PASSION from the roastery!! We get drinks in store to make that have been created there, it would be awesome to get to taste a wb coffee directly from there that we can’t get anywhere else.
I don’t live anywhere near Seattle, so I have to experience the Roastery vicariously through your posts! Despite being an avid Starbucks consumer, my favorite roast is still their old fashioned, tried and true, Colombian roast.
Sulawesi was my first ‘a ha’ moment coffee just over 12 years ago. The herbal tones came out so strong on my palate and it finally made my ‘Coffee 201’ journey click together and elevate my passion for coffee (and geography, I read about this uniquely shaped island and its culture). I get excited every time we have an offering from here. It would be wonderful to get to try this very different offering.
I would love to try this coffee. My favorite whole bean coffee is Christmas Blend Espresso Roast.
I was intrigued by your original post about Whiskey Barrel Sulawesi. I try different Reserve coffees, but this is a chance to try a coffee that would never make it to Texas. My favorites of core coffees are usually bolds like Sumatra, Verona, Komodo Dragon & Italian Roast. Today I will be going for the single Origin Ethiopia Sidamo.
Wow thank you for offering to share this rare coffee with one lucky winner. I love the analogy to the old days of Christmas Blend releases – before my time as well but I’ve heard the stories. I’m a coffee master and store manager and I know my partners would love to try this coffee with me. My favorite coffee has been Kenya since I first tried it as a licensed partner in 1998 but I love trying new coffees and sharing them with my team.
I am a District Coffee Master over here in the UK.
We often unable to get some lovely Reserve Coffee that you guys can get over there. And living within close proximity to the Seatlle Roastery must be a joy in itself.
We have recently managed to get our first Reserve Coffee Store in Covent Garden in London but that is a three hundred mile jouney for us in the middle of the U.K. where we are based.
If it would be possible to get a bag of the Cask Coffee, it would make everyone day over here in the Derby Store.
Thanks for listening.

Wow, this is the first time I’ve ever read about a lineup for whole beans. Now I’m really intrigued about this coffee.
Reserves are my favorite offering as Starbucks and the most memorable ones to me are Aged Sumatra, Christmas Reserve, and Jamaica Blue Mountain. For everyday home brewing I use a Starbucks seasonal offering. Every year I make sure to get Guatemala Casi Cielo, Anniversary Blend, Christmas Blend.
I would love the opportunity to try this coffee with all of my partners! I am currently working on my coffee master certification, and would love for this coffee to be a part of it!!
Hi Melody. I want to share this coffee with SM Todd who originally introduced our team to Whiskey Barrel Aged coffee. If I’m selected I will be sure to send you picks of our tasting. Thank you for all that you do.
This would be so awesome for our Starbucks
Partners in San Antonio, TX. I would love to do a coffee tasting with our coffee counsel (baristas selected from multiple districts) to celebrate their work! Plus our baristas are the most awesome people ever!! Oh, my favorite coffee is Casi Cielo and winning this would ease the pain of placing the last available Verismo Pod in San Antonio into my Verismo last week. I am still a little sensitive…
I would love to win becuse today is my birthday!!! I am a starbucks partner in Arkansas, but I’m from WA state.. and will be visiting soon, so I could use the card when I visit the roastery!!
I’d really like to surprise my wife with this coffee, she loves the various reserves but I do know she really likes sulawesi.
I know she’d brew a cup (or two) in her Chemex the day it arrived!
My favorite whole bean coffee at Starbucks is their Casi Cielo, as it makes for a wonderful cup of coffee to wake up to and my wife quite enjoys it.
Glad to read about a new coffee, it’s been awhile since I’ve made time to read up on some instead of just spending it trying to get more used to grinding my own beans.
I would love to be able to share this coffee with my partners and especially with my barista who is almost finished with his coffee master training. We have all been drooling over this since we first found out about it.
Hello. I am a coffee master at Starbucks in Hermitage Pa and we have a few other code coffee masters in training right now. Our store in general has a strong coffee passion among our partners and I would love to be able to share this with them during our next Partner Passport Night where we get together and do coffee tastings together. Also my go to coffee is (decaf) Sumatra and regular Sumatra when I’m not breastfeeding! Thank you for all your fun Starbucks knowledge.
I would love to win this coffee to share with all of my fellow partners at Hermitage, PA. We are all our crazy passionate about coffee. Thank you for doing this great giveaway.
Hello Melody,
I love your blog and read it all of the time! I’ve been a huge reserve fan with my favorite being the coveted Kona Reserve. I live in Ohio and the chance of me enjoying a rare reserve coffee like this one is close to zero, so I would love to try this new Whiskey Barreled coffee! My plan if I win is to enjoy the Sulawesi both using a pour over and cold brew. Thank you for your blog and for doing this giveaway!
We are coming out to Seattle from Ohio over Easter and was really hoping to try this new coffee at the roastery. So sad it won’t be available. We are avid Starbucks fans and drink only Starbucks coffee made from their beans. Hoping to win to share with my three grown children. Thank you.
My favorite whole bean coffee at Starbucks is the Jamaican Blue Mountain. It’s soooo smooth and wonderful.
well, i am spoiled because you already sent me some of this coffee, but i want more so i can share it with more partners. everyone here is so curious and rightfully so!
Awesome! My favorite is still the simple Veranda blend, although I recently tried the Jamaica Blue Mountain.
to respond to your post and as well as the Facebook post that you posted. I would love to experiment on the coffee on different pairings. I went to the coffee con LA and I wished Starbucks was a part of the vendors like they were in Seattle but during the coffee con, there was a vendor who used the blood oranage Pellegrino with espresso shots. It then inspired me to experiment with Starbucks ready to drink bottles with the reserve coffees. This would be a great tasting to try and provide my experience to my store as well as the Starbucks fan blog page. Thank you for all you do
Representing as a Starbucks barista in Hermitage, PA! I am one of many who have grown to be more and more passionate about coffee! It would be incredible to win and try this blend at our stores coffee tastings and expand my knowledge further of our companies many delicious options. My personal favorite has been our Ethiopian blend – and my go to has been Veranda! Thanks for this wonderful opportunity!
Hi, Melody. My favorite Starbucks coffees include casi cielo, Christmas blend and Sumatra. I would love to win this contest because I love coffee and I love whiskey. This would definitely excite my senses.
I was a partner working in the newly-opened Gastown store in Vancouver in the early 1990’s. At the time, my two favorite coffees were Sulawesi and Arabian Mocca Java. I loved the richness, the heartiness, the body and the earthiness of Sulawesi. And I was sad to see it go from Starbucks regular bean rotation. I would very much love a chance to enjoy the coffee again, with the added twist of aging it. Aged Sumatra is awfully tasty and I expect this will be as well. Thanks for offering us the chance to win the coffee, Melody.
This is a wonderful giveaway! I am a partner in Hermitage Pa and I am training to be a coffee master, along with 3 other partners in my store. Our store is extremely passionate not only about the different coffees but also the different coffee brewing methods. I would share this coffee with all of our partners!!!
I’d love to try this coffee! I love strange coffees and coffee ideas. I often share my creations with friends and family and am always excited o try something new.
My go-to is always a blonde roast, but this sounds amazing! Enjoyed the blog for a long time, Melody – thanks for the chance to win. And by the way, I’m looking forward to my first Starbucks at sea when I go on my honeymoon cruise later this year. 🙂
I would love a shot at this coffee for my partners and I to try!
