I like to do one blog post each year where I review the special holiday food items offered by Starbucks. This year there is a palette of chocolates, some chocolate peppermint graham crackers, and more. Here’s my review of some of the holiday treats:
Chocolate Peppermint Grahams – These are delicious! The graham cracker has just the right amount of snap and crunchiness to it, and the layers of peppermint and chocolate are wonderful. This is one of my favorites. There are five individually wrapped graham crackers in red holiday packaging. Also, these are only $5.95 for the box of five grahams. Two thumbs up!
Snowman Cookie – This isn’t really designed as a treat to give as a gift, but I thought I’d review it. The snowman cookie comes with either a red or blue scarf, but there is no flavor difference between the two. It’s a shortbread cookie with a buttery-rich frosting. I really liked the frosting a lot. The cookie as a whole has a lot of buttery-ness to it, which is to be expected. I’m not a huge fan of shortbread cookies, but mine was good. I think fans of shortbread cookies will love this. The rest of us might want to just eat the frosting off of it. Each snowman cookie is $2.25, and can be found in the pastry case. Mostly two thumbs up!
Chocolate Bites – This is two little jars neatly packaged together. One jar has peppermint cookie bites, and the other has chocolate-covered almonds with gray sea salt. The salted almonds are not new, and is the same item already available at the register. I have definitely liked these chocolate sea salt almonds for a long time. They have just the right amount of sea salt flavor, and the almonds are delicious. The peppermint cookie bites do taste like a peppermint cookie. This is a very nice combo, and easily gets two thumbs up. It retails for $9.95.
Chocolate Palettes – There are four flavors of dark chocolate squares, either available in a single package of four, or in a larger package with a total of 20 chocolate squares. The larger package of 20 retails for $14.95. The orange zest flavor barely has any orange flavor. It’s just not that great. The salted caramel also is somehow not very good. The caramel is okay, but it overly dominates the little square. The third flavor, ginger and peppercorn, … well, I could barely eat it. I simply don’t think peppercorn works with chocolate. I bought a large set and shared with a variety of people who were at my neighborhood Starbucks. The register barista, who tried ginger and peppercorn chocolate, made an unpleasant face as if to say, ‘Can I spit this out now?’ One customer wanted to try it, so I gladly shared. She told me she’s a fan of this flavor combination, but that the ginger flavor is too light. The pistachio chocolates aren’t bad. They have a faint salty taste, and are the best of the four. I’m sorry to say this though, but I just have to give these chocolates two thumbs down. There are better items out there to grab at Starbucks. By the way, I have heard Starbucks baristas rave about these, and say they sell well. Maybe so, but they’re just not for me.
Gingerbread Biscotti – Look for this item at the register. I have also seen this neatly packaged inside a coffee mug as a gift item idea, but I suspect many people get this for their coffee, and grab it at the register. It’s great for dunking. It holds its texture well, and quickly gets a little softer when dunked into coffee. I dunked mine into Christmas Blend by the way, and I thought this worked well with a the bold flavor of Christmas Blend. The frosting is delicious. Two thumbs up.
I still need to try out the hot chocolate kit which includes marshmallows in it. I’ll report back on that in another blog post. Until then, hope you enjoy a few holiday treats.
By the way, I realize it’s been a long time since I’ve listed a thread as an “open thread.” Feel free to talk about anything Starbucks-related in the comments below. This is an open thread.

I had the peppermint choc. grahams a couple weeks ago, and I agree….really good! (plus can be ‘purchased’ as a ‘reward’).
Also had the snowman cookie, or, part of one. I think it’s definitely one of their better frosted cookies..(I like the sugared cookies best). I bought one of these for a cookie-loving friend and it was a hit. I’d take the graham crackers any day.
As for the box of chocolates, didn’t try..too many combos that didn’t seem appealing….now I know! Also agree that the gingerbread biscotti was good….but not my first choice for a food bite. (still loving my walnut brown sugar tarts:)
Do highly recommend the choc. peppermint grahams….I only needed one and was satisfied with a cup of BOLD!
Alright, you’ve convinced me! Today I am going to try and find those grahams. Yum! And now I want to try the snowman cookie, too. I think they’re adorable! I need to order more of the hot chocolate, my dad loves it and it’s basically all he likes from Starbucks (he’s not a coffee drinker). I love when you review foods and such! Now I know which things to try! 😀
Denise the graham cookies have been on my list to try after your first review but the way my local store’s products are displayed it is really difficult to find things, but now with your review and Melody’s I am going to buy it with one of my rewards. Re the snowman cookie- I have to do a thumbs down on it! Maybe it was sitting too long but two times I tried it the cookie had no taste and was dry. Since this is an open thread- Lately, my local SB has really been packed with people and overall all the partners have been incredible with the flow. However, I think there has to be a better way to put the bagged food that is ordered on the counter so people know which is theirs. I have seen so much confusion especially when it gets busy. I also will continue a pet peeve of mine to say even though it is nice to have holiday displays I still wish it would be more holiday generic and not just in the red colors.
Thanks for the treats review. I really like to know what others think before buying. I do love the gingerbread biscotti. It was the food item I bought to go with my mocha latte during my first visit to Satrbucks several years ago. May have to try that snowman cookie, it looks so cute. I do think it could be given as a gift to a child if it’s wrapped in a piece of the colored plastic wrap and tied with ribbon. My daycare kids would love it!
Loe the treats review- I love the gingerbread biscotti! Tomorrow starts the 12 days of Christmas- does anyone know what they will be doing this year for it?
Nevermind found this… http://www.ilovetogossip.com/starbucks-12-days-of-christmas-2012-deals-are-up/
I will definitely be purchosing the tumbler and getting free coffee for January. It was worth every penny last year. and will have to pick up a few pounds of coffee for 9.95 🙂
Umm…When I clicked on the link for the 12 days Amy posted, I noticed a picture with a dark cherry mocha Frappuccino. Are they playing a trick on us, or are they bring that back?!?
It could very well be a bad link that I showed and shared. Does anyone have any insight about whether or not the information on that website is accurate.
I’m glad I saw this before purchasing the chocolate squares. I was debating. Now I know that it may be a good one to just pass over. Thanks, Melody!!
@Amy in Boston – I am kind of replying in a rush. Looks like that link you gave, the author just grabbed in old photo to go with the text. I’ve seen that kind of thing happen often! Those are old logos on the holiday cups. The 12 days info may be right, but the photo isn’t even relevant. It’s just an ancient old holiday photo (and could have even been a photo from an international market – someone probably grabbed something from google images. I think some international markets have had dark cherry as a winter promo drink in the past.)
I LOVE those snowmen cookies. <3 I've eaten at least five in the last two weeks. My waistline does not thank me, but what can I say–they're DELICIOUS! https://twitter.com/februaryfour/status/269580981550342144/photo/1
@purple1: I agree that the cookie one gets has to be really fresh, or it doesn’t stand a chance. This happens often with their pastries, in my experience. As I said: I prefer the sugared cookies (which I feel they NEED to bring back!) but this was a pretty good frosted one…at least the one I got and also the one I got for a friend. AND, I think the peppermint choc. grahams are a HUGE hit..I gave one who is basically NOT a peppermint person and she was amazingly surprised…loved it.
I do, however, really REALLY miss the peppermint brownies. Lord, they were SO good. I posted a long time ago: please keep these all yr. but, to no avail. and, I know quite a few people who thought they were the best thing they’d ever tasted. (for a sweet). I used tto love the cranberry bliss bars, then they changed and now? not so good. I’d love to see the peppermint brownies come back in their place!
re: Verismo for the MSI people who were told they’d be getting one. anyone???? anything??? I’ve heard they’re very near………. anyone?
@DeniseR – No sign of a Verismo here.
Your first comment says that you got the peppermint grahams as a “reward?” I just tried it, and it wouldn’t work. I want to make sure I understood you right. The barista tried it, but said her register wouldn’t take it as a reward.
oh no! i had such high hopes for the chocolate palettes!!! i really miss the fran’s chocolates we used to carry. so delicious! the peppermint grahams are to die for. they are my favorite holiday treat at starbucks!
Hi @denise r!
I agree about the freshness – Starbucks really is lacking in the pastry department and then when they aren’t the freshest they can be, it really takes it down even further. I suggest asking “did you open those today” before you decide what to order. If they weren’t opened the day you order them, it probably isn’t worth the price/effort. My $.02
@Melody & Denise….. My Verismo arrived this afternoon while I was at work.
I think I will try the Chocolate Peppermint Grahams this weekend.
@Chgo. Awesome! Have fun playing with your new Verismo. By the way, you’re right on the money with your comments about MSI in that “ignore a user” thread. Incredible how angry people get (like as if it will make you look cool to take a jab at others), and how they leap to wrong conclusions. But I guess “ignore a user” would be hard to implement when one person has many user names! LOL.
I realize I don’t know what address my Verismo is slated to arrive at.
1) Yay!!! for the Verismo surprises!
2) @Melody: for sure, at least here, the choc. grahams can be used as a reward. I’ve done it twice with no trouble each time. It may have changed since I last did that but I can’t see why? It seems the rewards would be based on some price limit and at $5.95….they’re less expensive than many drinks. (at least with my 4 shots in everything:)
3)Hi to chgo and CD! @chgo: are you keeping the Verismo or using it as a gift? I recommend trying some of the syrups (ie: peppermint), which goes in first, along with some mocha powder or sauce (sauce online only), then a milk pod then the espresso pod. makes a good treat drink. especially topped with a little whip! I know you (?) prefer decaf, they only sell decaf espresso pods online but!!! you can buy a box of decaf lattes (so you get 8 milk pods and 8 decaf pods) at some other stores,,,,like Bed Bath and Beyond. Also the Christmas Blend pods and Verona make a good cup of coffee…but not very much (quantity), and also not decaf. I know you’re spoiled with that Clover at the P.R. store (how is that store???)….I still have to go to R.F. and check them out….but the Verismo is a fun thing. (my $.02 cents!)
Denise you are getting me psyched for those graham crackers and this am at my local SB I asked the SM if they had any and he sort of looked perplexed and could not find them and then said the holiday retail food items are doing very well and then he said they only get so many per automatic orders. So, next time I go in I am going to ask one of my favorite partners there if he knows if they have any and perhaps he will save me a package. Disappointed for sure.
Wrote too fast meant to say SM said the holiday retail food items were not doing very well! Part of that is I think due to the amount of floor space and the way all is displayed.
@Melody – I would be interested in knowing how many of these Holiday items you have tried? I know everybody’s taste differs, but I depend on everybody else to find out what taste good and what doesn’t. Then I decide whether I should try it or not.
@Denise – I was leaning toward gifting it, but my wife and daughter aren’t having that (well actually they are having it depending on how you look at it). I guess I’m keeping it. I don’t drink a lot of coffee at home. I’m set in my ways and like an excuse to go to Starbucks. I doubt it will beat the taste of a Clover made coffee. I am looking for an excuse to dump my Keurig Machine. The coffee has a horrid taste coming from the Keurig and I’m blaming the water. The Keurig is emptied when not in use, but I’m guessing any water that can’t be removed and remains, builds up and gives off a musty taste to the water. Even if we flush it 4 times before use, the water ruins the flavor of the coffee. I’m hoping the Verismo is different.
I should be drinking decaf as mush as possible, but I don’t anymore. My favorite decaf’s were Komodo Dragon and Verona. I can’t do much about that. I’m drinking Reserves most of the time and there are no decafs. I don’t like decaf Willow. I’m happy that I can get a decaf Christmas Blend for the moment. So often when I order a decaf, they forget to give me a decaf. It happened again today. I could make them remake it, but why bother? I’m content with the Reserves without a decaf option. The PR store is fine, but chaotic when outdoor seating is over for the season. Seating is scarce. We buy our drinks and go across to Panera and order food if we want a seat. I have not been to the RF store yet since the remodel. Every time I go near Harlem and Lake it cost me money lol!! I keep telling my wife to stop there in the morning when she drops my daughter at Dominican, but she hasn’t yet. It’s rather odd I haven’t been there considering I was a fan of that location going Clover. Seating is iffy like the PR store is and there are some real characters hanging outside because of the Green Line. Of course you know that…..
@Chgo – All of the items that I mentioned above in this article, I tried. That’s one of the reason it’s only five items. Actually, I rebought the peppermint grahams twice because they’re so good, and easy to share because of the packaging. I haven’t reviewed the Merry Moments Cocoa set yet because I haven’t bought one yet, but it’s on my list of things to do. So far, the only clear “miss” was the little chocolate squares, which just aren’t worth it, imho. What was Starbucks thinking?
By the way, I too have been told once by a doctor to cut down on caffeine, and consider decaf. Haven’t really listened to that advice. I don’t think I have written much about it, but just having a coffee conversation here … one unsung hero in the Reserves is the Colombia Supremo Valley of Gold. Wow. It’s squarely a light to medium roast profile, and incredibly flavorful cup of coffee from the Clover. It’s very reasonably priced. http://www.starbucks.com/coffee/reserve/colombia-supremo-valley-of-gold – I get hints of peanut, little roast profile, and light body in the mouth. It’s not “complex” like some of the dark coffees, but it’s just a gem. I really like it. And it’s inexpensive.
I realize that floor space varies from one store to another and some food has to be refrigerated, but thinking about it I find this year’s offerings hard to seek out and although there might be some small signs it seems that SB did not put much effort into doing in store promotions. Truly, without reading your blog posts melody I might not have paid attention to what is in the store. I am sure on some level SB does not want that.
@Purple1 – I think that as time goes by, Starbucks is increasingly making a shift to online information (their blogs, and websites, and to a very small degree, unofficial blogs) or information through social media sources (Facebook, Twitter, even Foursquare!). It seems to be a trend happening all over.
I noticed that when I did my first Starbucks Foursquare check in early today (at 7th and Pike), the Foursquare app immediately told me of today’s 12 Days of Gifting offer. It’s a little thing, but indicative of this shift away from paper signage in the store. It is what it is.
@Melody – I have found the CSV of Gold to be an excellent choice off the Clover Iced. I find the Medium Roasts work out best for me iced. My Doctor told me to quit drinking coffee altogether once. I told him besides a good glass of wine, it’s my only vice in life, and I would hardly call it a vice. So I asked him to make a decision for me. I asked him would he rather me drink coffee or go back to the days of drinking lots of beer? He didn’t know what to say. I told him I once drank 3 or 4 Venti’s a day and cut back to 1. That’s progress in my book. Caffeine really does have an effect on me some days, unlike it did 10 years ago. I refuse to touch it after 10 am.
Melody I totally understand what you are saying and have no issue with SB going the route of using social media to promote their products, etc. I do see it is the way of marketing and very effective, however, there still is that visual sensation a customer might want to feel when they walk into a store. Certainly, doesn’t that perhaps get a customer to buy an item?
Ok here I am again at my local SB and I ask about those peppermint graham crackers and the partners say wow that sounds good but we have never received them! Wow! I have to go to another store and see if they have it. Seems so odd my local store would not get them.
Thank you!
I’ve been eyeing up the treats (chocolate) and am very glad to know they aren’t worth it
I am also disappointed by the hot coco’s (you can get in the grocery store) 🙁
I usually like the cookies, but now i’ll need to try the grams!
re: the choc. peppermint grahams…apparently I JINXED my self on here talking about them. Twice I went into my regulaar place, the 1st time holding up the pckg and asking a more experienced partner: “can I use a reward for these?” She said she didn’t know, try it. I did, and it rang thru fine as a reward. Second time, a few days later, (since they were SO good) decided to get a pckg for a friend. Again, I said as a ‘reward’ and it rang thru fine. (I cannot imagine this stuff!)
So, after all this conversation, I go in today and NO, they can’t get it to work as a reward! So, I’m waiting for the sm and dm, who I intend to see on Monday…not that they can do anything but for some reason obviously this was changed. I can’t imagine why. I certainly could create a drink for more than $5.95! Seems it should be a reward, as it WAS, at least for those days that I asked for it…maybe a couple weeks ago? Anyway, that’s my story…and I hope it changes! There must be a dollar amount on what a ‘reward’ is and obviously it’s not $5.95. So….that’s all I know. (but they are really yummy!)
btw: got Peppermint Mocha VIA (6 pack) today at Target for $6.64, which was nice. Other than straight coffee, I think this is by far their best VIA.
Denise this morning I went to another SB and found the graham crackers and told the partner absolutely I could use it as a reward and she said no and we got into a yes and no game but ultimately she was correct. That was ok. I would be curious to hear what the SM and DM say to you. I have not tried them yet. BTW at my local SB a partner told me this am that the Verismo is not selling at all and another SB store came and took all their stock because that store sold out!
I totally agree the peppermint graham crackers are terrific and they should keep them all year long!
I’m glad these reviews were helpful! Denise, I’ve been meaning to pick up some more of the Peppermint Mocha Via. I think today might be the day to do that!
On a different topic, does anyone remember last year’s peppermint brownie at Starbucks? I was at Seattle’s Best yesterday, and picked up one of their peppermint bark brownies, and it occurred to me that it looks a lot like what Starbucks used to sell! I pinned it to my Pinterest profile here:
http://pinterest.com/pin/175288610468233523/
^ Is it just me, or does that look like it should be at a Starbucks not Seattles Best?
@Melody – It may not be the answer you were looking for, but who cares (kiddingly)? That brownie looks good no matter where it can be found! The nearest Seattles Best is inconveniently not so close to me. I want one though!
re: the infamous most perfect wonderful peppermint brownie. I REALLY LOVED IT!!!! I posted a thread on msi last yr to please keep it all yr now I just wish they even had it for Christmas. Was THE best treat. so sad. and like @Chgo, not close to any Seattles Best.
@Denise – There is one in Northlake between I-294/90. and Wolf Rd. It was a Starbucks that was converted to a SB a couple years back. They recruited a local barista from one of my Starbucks to work there when it opened. There is nothing convenient about going west on North Ave. most of the time, but I now may have a good excuse to visit an old friend and get my hands on one of those brownies.
Gee!!! Thanks for the idea Mel!!! Sweeeet!!! Literally……
The snowman cookies aren’t getting nearly enough attention here! They don’t have regular frosting. The top is milk and white “chocolately”. Don’t worry about the “y”. It just means it has a bit less cacao but it is delicious. The hat tastes like the milk chocolate and the body tastes like white chocolate. The cookie is flavorful and flaky. So many of the fancy iced prepackaged cookies that you see in other stores are hard as a rock, taste like cardboard and the icing is just crunchy sugar. I bought a whole box of these to stick in the freezer to break out on Christmas eve as they are so festive. The only negative is the blue scarves should have been Green!
@chgo: thanx for the info..but I’m thinking that is a pain (as you said) to get to…for me. Not really so far, especially on the way home from my mom’s but just not convenient. I was SO disappointed they didn’t bring back the peppermint brownies…they were always selling out here. I guess they think the ‘cake pops” are a replacement. 🙁 (not to me)
I whole-heartedly agree with the chocolate palette review. I was rather excited to try them because I know what a hit the salted caramel platform has been, and that it was in fact inspired by a candy. Plus they just seemed “fancy”.
The best of the bunch is the pistachio. If you are a fan I recommend buying the salted chocolate almonds which have a similar taste profile. I agree that the orange has NO orange flavor, the ginger peppercorn is a complete miss (inedible in my opinion) and the salted caramel is WAY TOO SALTY.
The Snowman cookies are a HIT with the kids. This is why I’ve found it’s best to keep them on the lower shelf of the case so they’re right at kid’s-eye-level 🙂 On a Saturday we will easily sell an entire case. So we have no problems with freshness at my store! I agree the shortbread version this year is immensely helping sales.
I have received a lot of feedback about disappointment over the lack of a peppermint brownie this year. And when I point out the Peppermint Brownie cake pop, customers give me that frowny “yeah right, you know that’s not the same thing” face. I completely agree with them! They sold like crazy and I think it would be WAY easier to sell a tray of them than a tray of Cranberry Bliss Bars, especially if they were part of the 12-day sale.
One more thing–for all you brownie lovers, there is a cheesecake brownie coming for the Winter promotion! Shhhhh, secret….. 😉
Melody, I looked at your pin of the ‘other’ peppermint brownie from Seattles Best, and while it looks good…it still doesn’t look the same (or as good) as the Starbucks one. I’m with Denise…that brownie was amazing.
Does anyone else miss the polar bear cookies? They were much better than the snowman ones.
