Christmas Blend 2013 is here. I know I’ve written about this before, but I recently went to a wonderful coffee seminar for this coffee, and had to talk about Christmas Blend one more time.
Before I go any further, I want to mention that this year’s Christmas Blend packaging is a little confusing. All of the Christmas Blend packaging has the words,”spice & sweetness” somewhere on it. (Or some words close to that). The Blonde Roast Christmas Blend is in gold packaging with the word “Holiday” on it in big letters, but it still says “spice & sweetness” and is Christmas Blend.
There is also a coffee that is “Holiday Blend” which is not the same coffee beans as Christmas Blend. If the bag of coffee says, “soft & layered” on it, then it is Holiday Blend (which should be almost entirely be found at other retailers such as grocery stores, Target, and so forth). If the bag of coffee says, “spice & sweetness” it is Christmas Blend.
The hallmark of Christmas Blend is aged Sumatra. Sumatra is sourced from Indonesia, and is a semi-washed coffee bean usually known for bold, rich flavors. Aged Sumatra is a coffee bean that has been stored in burlap sacks for 3 to 5 years, and then “aged” to the perfect level of spiciness. If you want to read more about aged Sumatra, I have an old article about it here – keep in mind I wrote that article over four years ago. Having said that, there’s still a lot of good information in that aged Sumatra article.
At the December 9th coffee tasting at the East Olive Way Starbucks, we paired all three Christmas Blend coffees with the gingerbread loaf. The three variations on Christmas Blend are as follows:
- Blonde Roast Christmas Blend
- Christmas Blend (the original and traditional blend)
- Espresso Roast Christmas Blend
Gingerbread loaf was a great pairing with all of these. All three of these coffees include the same components – Latin American coffee beans with aged Sumatra coffee beans. It’s interesting even to just look at the three variations of coffee beans side by side. One can really see the differences in roast profile by just a glance at all three.
Coffee Masters Donna and Jess walked us through each Christmas Blend, starting with the original Christmas Blend. All of the coffee was prepared with the Clover coffee brewer. The original Christmas Blend was definitely good. It was complex, and had some noticeable acidity giving it a little bit of a high note at the end of your coffee slurp. When paired with the gingerbread loaf, the high note acidity was definitely mellowed out.
My favorite of the three Christmas Blend coffees is still Espresso Roast Christmas Blend, which was introduced into the Starbucks whole bean lineup in 2010. Of course, you can always have any coffee that is an “espresso roast” as a drip coffee – that designates its roast profile, but it certainly doesn’t have to be used as an espresso shot. Donna and I agreed that this was a great coffee. For me, the dark roast brought out more of the molasses characteristics to the coffee – it’s a little bit syruppier and very sweet. The small amount of acidity that is present in the traditional Christmas Blend gets lowered down a notch due to the darker roast profile.
The Blonde Roast Christmas Blend was really interesting and fun, though not my go-to coffee. The Starbucks descriptors have soft spices, and warm notes, and describe complementary flavors as baked apple, allspice, and nutmeg. It does remind me a bit of a homemade apple crip – it’s sweet, high acidity (since it’s so light), and this year I did feel like I got some of the apple notes from it. Because Blonde Roast is such a light roast profile, I think that food can easily overwhelm the coffee, and so the blonde coffees are wonderful alone too. (Well, they’re all wonderful alone!).
The four steps of a coffee tasting as as follows:
- Smell
- Slurp
- Locate
- Describe
I always love a good smell picture, and snapped this photo of Donna in the midst of our coffee event:
There is a big difference between the blonde and espresso roast profiles, and you can even see it in the brewed coffee itself:
I want to share just a couple more photos from the coffee event:
Thank you Jess and Donna for a great coffee tasting. If you’re interested in attending an East Olive Way coffee education seminar, drop by on a Monday night at 6:00 pm – but be sure to call ahead. The coffee events are about every other Monday night, and so you might want to call ahead and double check the schedule. These events are free and open to the public. East Olive Way Starbucks 1600 East Olive Way, Seattle, WA 98102, (206) 568 – 5185.
As just an aside, the “Holiday Blend” coffee (look for the words “soft & layered” on the bag) is its own new coffee recipe this year. One thing I’ve been wanting to do is write about that as well, and I still hope to do so. I think if I didn’t work 40 hours a week, you’d get a lot more blog articles from me! I tried the Holiday Blend as a Verismo pod, and I was pretty stunned at how good it is. If you like reading about coffee tastings, there are many more articles in this blog’s archive.
Last but not least, one of my least favorite things are the Facebook algorithms that filter your Facebook feed. I’m constantly battling them. If you do like this article, or other photos and articles that I’ve posted to this blog’s Facebook page, please “like” the status updates that you like. If you haven’t liked my Facebook page, I hope you will. I post more photos there of my day to day Starbucks visits, and share links of interest too.
Enjoy!

Didn’t “holiday blend” used to be the name for “Christmas blend” for customers who didn’t celebrate Christmas? I thought it used to be the same coffee in a different package for a different customer segment.
Did this change this year?
Also, has anyone heard whether or not the Christmas blends will be on sale before the holidays and if so when?
Thanks
Dave – Yes indeed! Holiday Blend and Christmas Blend were always one and the same in the past. That’s kind of why I made a big deal about pointing out the difference this year. This year is the first year that Holiday Blend does not have any Aged Sumatra. I’m not sure what’s in Holiday Blend but it tastes like a Latin American blend to me.
I’ve been asked a couple of times if there will be another sale on Christmas Blend. I think the SSC sometimes decides that last minute depending on how much Christmas Blend is still hanging around in stores! They have to clear some out to make way for Casi Cielo. 🙂
@Melody, I never tire of your coffee tastings. The name/blend may be the same, but coffee is a very changeable product so each review really is new. Plus, the highlights of the people and other activities at the tasting are interesting.
If your favorite is the Christmas Espresso, then you should try it iced on the Clover!! It will blow your mind! If you are in West Seattle- stop on by the CaliFaunt Starbucks reserve store and say hi!!!
And yes all the Christmas coffees will be on special starting tomorrow Dec 12- buy any bag of whole bean Christmas coffees and get a $5 Starbucks gift card with purchase!
@Artemis J – thanks for the heads up on the special tomorrow.
In the past the Partners would be talking this up, particularly to us regulars. Sadly, too many relatively “new” partners (don’t deserve a capital “p”) that do not know how to truly merchandise.
Great blog
Really enjoyed reading made me want some Christmas blends 🙂
Also do they have tast events in all starbucks ,
Your blogs are amazing and I look forward to all the new ones to come 🙂

Yum!! Christmas Blend is my favorite coffee by far. There’s just something magical about the flavors. I stock up for the off-season. Recently, I ran across something that I can’t wait to try with the Christmas blend: cold-brewed coffee. The premise is that the heat creates the bitter flavors and if you steep your coffee in a coffee press for 24 hours at room temperature, you get a different flavor profile. I tried it with the Willow Blend and it was amazingly smooth.
@Artemis J: yes, thanks for the heads-up! I d need to get coffee and I’ve seen nothing of this “promo”. I hope I don’t have to TELL them this, or for that matter, even ask about it!
Have some patience with your local Starbucks teams. Holidays mean changing promotions, sometimes daily, sometimes three times in one day (literally). It’s hard to keep up. We do our best! It’s not unheard of for zero lead time to share something with customers before its launch. Add in the mix part time baristas who might only work two or three shifts a week, and it’s a tall order to keep everyone up to speed. We try! Did you get an email about something? Bring it. See it on social media? Pull it up. If we can find a way to make it work, I believe most of us will!
Sounds like you had a fun evening with Christmas Blends! I love the Espresso Roast Christmas Blend and must stock up soon.
@Jessica – sorry if I seemed to be coming down too hard on Partners. I, believe it or not, understand the challenges of the season and know that there are a lot of Partners who rise to the challenges. What I get really hot about, from the customer viewpoint, is I see that Seattle HQ is creating more problems than they are solving. They seem to be making the Holiday Season more stressful each year. They do not seem to learn from the past.
@dadcooks All good! Appreciate the empathy. It’s the most fun and exciting promo for me, by FAR, and it comes with challenges.
@Jessica, thanks, you have a positive attitude that will serve you well and benefit you no matter what you chose to do throughout your life.
Is it me, because I find the new Holiday Blend to be quite spicy in the K-Cup format.
I was THRILLED to see our cafe’ at work offer Holiday Blend this month! I too taste a bit more spice, but love it!!!
Did Starbucks change the expiration date range on their whole beans?
I just purchased some Christmas espresso roast and noticed the expiration date was for the end of April 2014. Last year the expiration date was for the beginning of June. In fact, 2 or 3 years ago I had sent Melody an email asking if Starbucks had extended the dates an extra month because I was seeing expiration dates 6 – 7 months out but now it looks like they’ve shortened it.
I know some companies use expiration dates as a marketing tool and this change is interesting (the regular Christmas roast had a march expiration date) especially in light of @dadcooks’ recent comments about troubles appearing to be afoot (paraphrasing).
Did the change happen with the new packaging? Anyone know the story/reason behind this?
@Cd – I am not aware of any shortening of the time between roasting and “expiration”.
There are two things that affect the expiration dates you see in the store: (1) how stock is rotated at the warehouse, and (2) how stock is rotated at the store.
Inventory should follow the basic FIFO rule (first in, first out) of inventory management. Basically you stock the closest expiration date so that it is the first on the shelf/rack; no matter whether in the warehouse, the back room, or the store shelf.
Unfortunately people are lazy and it is too easy to push what is on the shelf/rack to the back and put the new inventory in front. So you have new product in the front and old product in the back. Along comes someone who knows how to rotate stock and the old product gets moved to the front where it belongs. Unfortunately this sometimes means that out of date product is found and has to be marked out. A loss for the store and Starbucks and can negatively effect a stores bean allotment.
Hey all, I was just reading the comments and thought I tasted a difference in the Christmas blend this year as to the previous years. I started a tradition years back with my father who loved starbucks christmas blend , every year I would get him a package of the Christmas blend for Christmas and ever since the first time he loved it and ever since that year I got him a Christmas blend every year, he recently passed and I had kept the remaining of the Christmas blend he had in my cupboard as a reminder of the last year I bought it for him. I now carry on the tradition only with myself now and I too love the Christmas blend and am running short already and wanted to stock up but all the stores are out, is there any possible way you may be able help me find some, this is one special way I still stay connected with my dad, every morning when I make a cup I make 2, one for me and one for him. Please help me find some more. Thank you. Shawn . Philadelphia
Hi I have a pack of the Christmas blend from a gift set. Is it used just in a cup as normal or does it have to be used in a percolator. Thanks
@Shawn – you may want to call stores, or check with licensed stores, such as in Target or supermarkets. Unfortunately it’s sold out online.
@Jackie – you have to brew it (percolator, standard coffeemaker, etc.). Hope that helps.
