Once in a while, you’ll see Starbucks stores selling their own custom whole bean coffee blends. Over the years, I’ve heard ofย “Tahoe Blend,” “Bluegrass Blend,” as well as “Redwood Blend.” If you’re in the Seattle area, visit the Bainbridge Island Starbucks, and try the “Bainbridge Island Blend.”
Starbucks stores in Bozeman, Montana are offering their own special blend: Bozeman Blend. It’s described as “Balancing a sturdy backbone with bright acidity and complex citrus, cocoa and herbal notes – this blend evokes Bozeman’s mountain ruggedness and rich personality. Bozeman Blend is dark and smooth, but won’t weigh you down.”
I got to try the Bozeman Blend for the first time today (May 3, 2015). A friend brought me a bag. Someone sent her two bags (I’m not totally sure who! Sorry!) and gave my friend (Jocelyn) instructions to share it with Melody. I genuinely enjoy a chance to try a new coffee! They way to my heart is through a cup of coffee! ๐
So today I got to experience a quick tasting of the Bozeman Blend, made via a pour over brew method. It was fun to try this new blend! I got a lot of citrus notes. I shared the sample cups with several other partners. One person I was with described it as dark currant, citrus, with an herbal finish. Despite a grapefruit – currant like citrus note, it was surprisingly smooth and definitely complex. What I picked up on the least was the cocoa notes. I’d recommend trying this with a current or savory herbal scone.
A lot of customers haven’t seen custom blends around so I thought that it would be especially fun to spotlight this. This was an enjoyable cup of coffee, though wouldn’t be my go to cup of coffee for a hot cup of coffee. I did enjoy the complexity and the smoothness. Congrats to the Bozeman, Montana partners for their coffee passion and coming up with a fun, new blend!
Here are a few photos from today’s tasting:

This was so awesome to read. I’ve never seen the custom bends before and am now anxious to try one.
@Launce – I remember when custom blends used to be a big thing at Starbucks. In the 1990s, until about 2004 (??) it was a huge way for baristas to show off a skill – be able to blend a few coffees together and come up with a fun, overall new coffee blend. Thank you for your comment Launce!
Currently working on Pheonix Blend. Once we sort out packaging, I plan to ship you a few bags to share with the amazing Seattle partners I hope to meet soon. ๐
@Diele – Would love that! Can’t wait to try your Pheonix Blend and hope to see you soon!
if you want to do a bi blend giveaway with mug, let me know. I’m ready ๐
@Jocelyn – I haven’t done any giveaways in a long time. Maybe after my May vacation. Overall though, I’ve found giveaways to be frustrating – people make just one comment and don’t comment on other articles and/ or now and then people get confused about the rules.
That sounds so good! I don’t know that Tucson would create its own blend, so I’m all for what Jocelyn decides to come up!
I mean Diele….so sorry!!!!
is this available in all Bozeman stores? My brother goes to Montana State and I want to get some sent to me.
I was making cold brew with a 50/50 Brezza Kati Kati blend last summer and have wanted to custom blend some more coffees ever since!
@Diele – there is a Red Rock (Sedona) blend north of you in case you ever get up that way.
A clarification please- so when partners create custom blends do they just take beans from the existing stock of beans? Now that the roastery is open, can they request beans from there to add to the custom blend?
CD it has been discontinued ๐
Yes, Bozeman Blend was created as a coffee master project in Bozeman Montana because we do not have the population to support a You were here Mug. It is a blend of three of our core coffees that a partner spent a lot of time custom blending and tasting and communicating with the Breckenridge and Bainbridge island stores as they are also resort markets with custom blends. She also created a logo and a business plan to coincide with her blend. We have seen huge success with it and are excited to take it to an even bigger level!
This looks like and sounds like an amazingly delicious blend! Hopefully I one day get to try it, I still can’t get over at how delicious Bainbridge Island blend is! It’s literally like heaven in a cup, my new regional blend favorite!
I’ve never heard about these regional blends. Is there a way to order them? Is there a listing of them? Hopefully I can get a chance to try the Bainbridge Island blend when I visit “home” this fall. Thanks for the info!
