On April 28, 2015, Starbucks introduced three Foldovers into their lineup. (Starbucks is calling them a “Foldover” as all one word run together).
They’re suggested as a breakfast item, but of course you can order them anytime of day, so long as your store hasn’t run out.
The three foldovers are as follows:
- Ham and Cheese Foldover – This is sliced ham, melted Swiss cheese, and a sauce in a croissant foldover. It’s about 250 calories.
- Wheat Spinach Savory Foldover – Layers of wheat croissant enveloping a savory medley of spinach, shallots and a bechemal sauce. It’s about 250 calories.
- Volpi™ Pepperoni & Tomator Savory Foldover – This naturally-cured pepperoni layered with tomato and cheese, and folded in a croissant foldover. It’s about 270 calories.
Of the three, the pepperoni one is definitely my favorite. It kind of tastes a bit like a mini pizza. Starbucks previously offered savory squares on a croissant bread. Two of the new Foldovers are suspiciously close to the previous savory squares. (The ham and cheese and wheat spinach Foldovers are extremely similar to the past ham and cheese and wheat spinach savory squares). I like the new Foldover crust better than the past flat square, which was almost a little buttery and greasy for me.
Would love to hear your reviews of these new savory breakfast items!
(Here in Seattle, the new Foldovers retail for $3.45 each, although your area may vary. Prices can have some regional variation.)

I can’t wait to try these new Foldovers! Especially the Volpi, that one seems like it is sure to be a hit! I really liked the old Wheat Spinach savory square but I am sure I am going to love these as well. I like that Starbucks is introducing more food options with La Boulange, they seem to really be a place where you can get not only great coffee, but now great food.
They look a little on the small side. Are they bigger or smaller than the squares, and are the squares being… squared away?
>Pepperoni & Tomator
Sounds… imposing? 😉
So far only, spinach and I love it
I only had the old square version a couple of times. Too messy. But I would say @Steven that they are roughly the same size, just…folded over 🙂 The crust/bread on the new ones is also tastier.
I have started eating the pepperoni one as my partner food markout at least once a week and I am always full to bursting when I’m done. It is very, very filling! My only complaint, and it’s not much of one, is that I want smaller pepperonis. That first bite always includes pepperoni and I end up pulling the whole thing out of the foldover and dripping it all over my face! It’s a very scary thing when it happens, especially when it has just come out of the oven.
On the whole, I love the new version. Our store can barely keep the ham and cheese one available because it is so popular. The wheat spinach is definitely the least popular. That much spinach gets a bit dull after awhile. Perhaps later versions could pair the spinach with something else?
I saw this a few days ago when I popped into my local Starbucks and was confused why Starbucks replaced the squares.
Does anyone know why the squares were replaced? I really loved the tomato and cheese one.
We’re still waiting on ham & cheese and the pepperoni. I don’t care for spinach, so I did not enjoy my sample of the spinach foldover. The wheat croissant part was good though.
I tried the ham and cheese folder over this morning. It was delicious! That and a short skinny cinnamon dolce latte kept me on my diet plan, yet tasted decadent and filled me up!
I really enjoyed the Ham and Cheese savory square. I am tired of Starbucks changing items so frequently. I will admit that the Ham and Cheese foldover does taste better than the square esp the crust and it has fewer calories but it is also quite a bit smaller. Also for now none of the stores in my area have been able to keep the foldovers in stock.
@Marie – One thing you’re totally right about, the food is quick to change at Starbucks. It’s like a whirlwind of ever changing snacks and treats. Very few things stay for a long time – seems like the potato chips and popcorn haven’t changed in a long while.
