Time for a (roughly) monthly store review!
On this extremely rainy afternoon, I made my way down to Tigard, Oregon to visit a Starbucks. Unlike Juan Valdez who randomly chances upon his Starbucks for his reviews, I plot out which stores I will visit.
I picked this store because a familiar barista works there. A really wonderful barista transferred from a downtown Seattle Clover store to this store in Oregon. My understanding is that she is originally from Oregon, then moved to Seattle and first worked briefly at a Starbucks at 1st & Walker in the SODO neighborhood, and then from there moved to a downtown Seattle Clover Starbucks, where I met her. And then, the story doesn’t end, sadly she moved back to Oregon.
This store is a small brick building as a stand-alone cafe on a busy roadway, near a Subway, and next to George’s Giant Burgers. I arrived early afternoon, and it didn’t let up raining the entire time I was there. Three partners were working when I arrived, including the store manager, Kristin. It tickled me pink to see one of the baristas wearing a green apron with not one but FOUR pieces of “flair“. Her apron boasted four mug pins. I arrived in the middle of a rush, but as I sat there the business died down to just a few people in the store. When it was quieter, one barista came out and swept the floors, and cleaned up around the store. After the rush, a steady trickle of customers came in and out.
I had quite the afternoon. I spent nearly half an hour engaged with another customer who asked me “what is a blog?’ and wanted to know what I was doing at my little netbook. As it turns out, she needed to get online, and needed to go through the validation of her new Starbucks registered card, and so I ended up offering her my netbook for a moment and she accessed her yahoo email.
She asked me a million and one Starbucks questions (she seemed a little confused that a person would write about Starbucks) and finally the conversation ended with, “Starbucks should be paying you …” (It’s not the first time I’ve heard that). I told her the truth that I would probably not be blogging about Starbucks forever … at some point I’m going to run out of things to write about! (This is probably going to be a short-lived blog).
While at this store I ate “Portland Coffee Cake” with my Thanksgiving Blend coffee, because it appears to be a local offering. I’m a little puzzled but it seems in Portland the coffee cake offering is a slightly different recipe coffee cake than any other Starbucks coffee cake. The topping is a bit more crumbly and it has a stronger sort of ‘spice’ flavor to it, and the cake part is not quite as sweet as the typical Starbucks Classic Coffee Cake.
I have to comment on the bathroom too. So I did step into the ladies’ room and it was spotless. I noticed that the bathroom mirror was perfectly spotless. I don’t normally pay too much attention to the bathroom, just so long as it is ‘cleaner than a gas station’ but this bathroom was truly clean. I had to wonder if they had just been in there with the Spic ‘N Span moments before me, and I just hadn’t noticed.
I spent a long time at the store, and even after being there 90 minutes, the baristas – without any hassle – re-brewed Thanksgiving Blend for me. That was impressive too!
The store has 2 Mastrena machines and a typical Starbucks interior with some wooden round tables and two comfy chairs. As an aside, I prefer the round wooden tables to the square ones I’ve seen at a few stores. I have heard it said (though I’ve never been able to confirm this) that when Starbucks was very very small, they spent a lot time studying what tables would work best in their stores and ultimately decided that the small tables had to be round. There were 2 reasons for this: (1) They decided that square tables were more commonly associated with fast food and (2) that somehow a person sitting alone looked less lonely at a round table than a square table.
All is well that ends well … another successful and lucky store review excursion! Clean bathrooms, Thanksgiving Blend, and Portland Coffee Cake! What more could I ask for?

I like round tables.
I like round tables too – less likely to bump on a corner. And I >do< like their pins!
i agree with latte rose, that my clumsy self is less likely to bump into a corner and get hurt, if there’s no corner to bump into!
i’ve already mini-injured myself a few times on 15th ave’s tables 😛
Elly, glad you mention that. I’ve bumped myself on the tables at 15th Ave Coffee, and for some reason those are some harsh corners. Keep round tables at Starbucks! 🙂
I agree. Smaller tables should be round. Although I’d love to see a large communal table in my area.

Cam, at some point I will run out of Starbucks topics! Anyways, I’ve seen some newer Starbucks in Snohomish County which have smaller square wooden tables, and it just looks wrong to me! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that way.
I was born and spent seven years in that neck of the woods. I love it there, but it always rains.
Isn’t it crazy how we notice bathrooms that are exceptionally clean or super gross?
And yay for them rebrewing! I have yet to see a store w thanksgiving blend brewed.
I love that you go to different cities (states) to check out different starbucks coffees. I’m thinking I should check it out next time I’m heading down to Portland 😀
Sometimes it’s so hard to distinguish one Starbucks from another. There are only some many subtle changes that one Starbucks can have from another.
What’s the difference between a Mastrena and a Clover machine?

As to your question about store equipment: A Clover is a special brewer which handcrafts a single cup of coffee. I have a couple of different blog posts on it on this site, with many embedded links.
A Mastrena is an espresso maker that pulls a lovely shot of espresso.
Both are state of the art pieces of coffee equipment, but the Mastrena is for espresso, and the Clover is for a cup of brewed coffee.
The Clover is a very rare piece of equipment and is currently placed in about 1% of Starbucks stores.

I too much prefer round tables over square ones. Square ones always sorta remind me of fast food. I wish that all Starbucks would switch to round tables noly.
I don’t really care what shape the tables are as long as they have tables!

Once upon a time this store was once a Taco Bell. About 7 years ago, I believe, Starbucks began renting the space from a local business and Taco Bell built their own building literally across the highway.

I might be a little late in posting on this but that is a an old Taco Bell or Taco Time restaurant. I can’t remember which, but I am extremely glad it is now a starbucks. The Portland Coffee cake is the best!
I love the Portland classic coffee cake! It’s my weekly treat and they serve it also in Bend, OR at the downtown starbucks. Yummy stuff!

Does Portland still have a unique coffee cake? I always thought that was weird that for some reason Oregon seemed to have a totally unique coffee cake offering in their stores. But it’s been so long since I’ve even thought about that, and in the meantime numerous food offerings have come and gone.
This might be an odd question, but if it’s no trouble, I would love for you to come back and post a photograph of the Starbucks Portland Coffee Cake. I would have thought by now they would have switched to the same recipe as everywhere else.

I will gladly take a picture of it the next time I buy one, which will probably be next week. I imagine that an employee of one of the Portland starbucks moved to Bend and brought the recipe here. I have no idea if they’re still making it in Portland.
They have the Portland Coffee Cake, as well as the Classic Coffee Cake, in the Hillsboro, Oregon store. The Portland Coffee Cake is wonderful.
Hi Julia! Welcome to the blog. I hope you’ll “like” the blog’s facebook page too (widget in right side column.) Portland Coffee Cake is just one of the funny regional offerings that Starbucks does. It seems almost more random to me but yes, Portland gets its own special coffee cake! I’m pretty sure that a reader of this blog uploaded a photo of the Portland Coffee Cake to my blog’s facebook page, but that was eons ago. I don’t know if I could find it now. Glad to hear that this delicious treat is still around!

For me, moving from Oregon to Washington 3 years ago has been hard, I can’t obtain my favorite Portland Coffee Cake that I have been enjoying since 1994. I try to stock up on the Portland Coffee Cake whenever I make a trip to Oregon. The Classic Coffee Cake is too sweet and dry for me to even like, likewise for the other coffee cakes starbucks offers, even the reduced fat ones are sticky sweet. The Portland Coffee Cake is nice and very light w/ a topping that I can brush off a little off to adjust to my personal taste.
Alas, no more Portland Coffee Cake in the Oregon stores since the intro of La Boulange.
