Some of my readers might remember that at the end of September, I wrote about Starbucks testing “Refreshers” beverages in San Diego, California. These drinks use an extract of un-roasted coffee and produce a beverage that isn’t quite like a juice, but isn’t quite like a tea either. They definitely do not taste like coffee. In San Diego, Starbucks tested a “Cool Lime” flavor and a “Very Berry Hibiscus” flavor, both of which I previously blogged about here.
Starbucks is again testing “Refreshers” but this time there is a test in Washington State, and the flavors are now “Orange Melon Fizz” and “Strawberry Citrus Fizz” Refreshers. The new Refreshers may be in the same family as beverages as their San Diego counterparts, but have been dramatically altered in recipe. Both variations on Refreshers include some kind of extract of green, unroasted beans, providing the beverage with caffeine and pulling it into the “Refreshers” family of drinks. The new Refreshers are described as having “ginseng” and “Vitamin B” and have a fizzy layer of foam on top. The appearance looks a bit like a bubbly Italian Soda. I tried both of the new drinks, and preferred the Orange Melon Fizz over the Strawberry Citrus. Interestingly, the consistency of the two drinks is a little different from their San Diego counterparts. The new Refreshers seem to be light weight and easy to drink yet both drinks had an intense tiny bit of syrupy flavor at the bottom. It was like as if there is some heavy component which settles at the bottom. The last one-eighth of the drink is intensely sweet and tastes a bit like lemonade to me.
Writing about test beverages (or test products) is one of my favorite things to do. I am continually amazed by the many things that Starbucks does test, most of which never launches nationally. If you want to read more about Starbucks tests, I’ve listed out some of my previous “test” blog posts (up to this point):
- Starbucks tests the Honey Vanilla Vivanno
- Starbucks tests the “Trenta” size cup
- Starbucks experiments with digital menu boards
- Tea that is not afraid to mingle: Test tea beverages, sparkling and blended tea drinks
- Starbucks tests a “drip only” line in Chicago and a “Classic Black Tea” in Atlanta
- Melody tries the “Refreshers” test drinks in San Diego (Lime and Very Berry Hibiscus)
- Starbucks tests delicious “mini” treats in Arizona
- New Refreshers in Washington State: Strawberry Citrus and Orange Melon flavors
I realize that I am repeating myself but it is important: Starbucks tests all kinds of things which never launch. Do not get your hopes up that you’ll see this at your local store. As I recall, a little over one year ago there was news that Starbucks was testing ‘blueberry waffles’ for breakfast in Denver. Unfortunately I never had any reason to fly to Denver to try this and was never able to put together any blog post on the blueberry waffles. The fact of the test remains as yet one more example of Starbucks testing all kinds of food and beverage in many different geographies. The new customize-able Frappuccino, which did eventually launch nationally this year, was in fact tested for a long time in Texas before the national launch.
What do you think of this latest test beverage? The previous versions of the Refreshers (the San Diego versions – Lime and Berry) seemed to have a following. Once in a while people come to MyStarbucksIdea.com asking for them to come back. Here is an example of that kind of thread:
Looking forward to your refreshing comments!

I really wonder how they decide on what to test- food vs. beverage and what locations. I never see any tests around here on the east coast. I assume they do some marketing analysis to determine where to test. Isn’t the cost of the tests vs. not launching nationally not viable to them? What kind of feedback do they get? Also, if they are going to do tests why not include more vegetarian options? (and without cheese) Also, why are all the test beverages so sweet?
As much as I like to try new things, I am not so sure about these, sounds like they settle out too quickly 🙁
Like most tests in Washington (the State) Starbucks has forgotten that more than two-thirds of the state is East of the Cascades.
In the Tri-Cities our Columbia Center Mall and Highlands Center stores would provide a good demographic for this sort of beverage test.
Maybe Starbucks considers us too critical and opinionated ;0)
What stores are they testing these at? I’d be interested in trying one.
Since you tried both kinds of Refreshers, which did you like best? The ones tested earlier in California sound more like something I would buy.
Those sound delicious! I think I’d be more interested in these two flavors than the previous two. And I really love the idea of the fizz! I’ll try not to get my hopes up, since Starbucks does seem to test a lot of products and treats that never make it outside of their test area. But I know one thing; if Starbucks widens the test area and brings ’em to Texas, or releases them to everyone, I’ll certainly be trying one!
Thanks for posting this! I always love reading about products Starbucks is testing. 😀
Wow, this blog news excites me. Which Starbucks store does the test? I will try “Orange Melon Fizz” and “Strawberry Citrus Fizz” at Seattle in next summer. About “ginseng” and “Vitamin B”, I remembered “Plus Energy shot” of Starbucks.
This is a great sign that the refreshers did well in the test market! I was just on a conference call about Minis on Friday. I was heading to the Mini thread to post details.
I’ve been meaning to come back to this blog post. Sorry – It’s been a long work day.
@dadcooks – I really don’t think Starbucks excludes Eastern Washington. If you look, few tests are ever in the City of Seattle proper – probably they know I would find them fast. 😉 Tests are all over the place:
* Sorbetto – Wide spread test Orange County & San Diego County (2008)
* The original Gold Card test (it was a white card at that time) – Denver – Early to mid 2008
* Blueberry waffles food test – Denver – I think that was March 2010, now that I’ve googled it, but it feels like a year ago.
* Refreshers – San Diego
* Frappuccino test (before the however you want it went national) – Dallas
* Classic Black Tea – Atlanta (Summer 2010)
* Mini treats test (2010) – Phoenix & Virginia Beach, VA
* Trenta cup size test – Phoenix and Atlanta
* Serving Ice cream (Starbucks ice cream in stores) – I’ve heard more than once there was a very small test in Los Angeles somewhere around 2005-2006 ??? But not sure
* There is a current test going on in Philadelphia which will be the subject of a future blog post as soon as I can get it written in and up!
* I had actually heard one time that “face recognition” technology with the Gold Card was tested in Gibsonia, PA, but I really don’t know for sure.
* Digital Menu Boards – Marysville, WA and San Diego
* Honey Vanilla Vivanno (Sept 2009 test) – Sacramento, California
So you can see they test things all over the place!!
Like Nob, I’d be interested to know what store or area in Washington is testing these. Thanks Melody!
Very interesting! Great job at scouting these out!
interesting info. but, as usual, the coffee shelves become less and less everyday. stores here are so full of VIA, it’s amazing. (and I like VIA)
as for these drinks, I’d be happy, very happy, if they just brought back the old ‘tazoberry’n cream’. I thought it was kind of a joke before but NOW, I really believe Sbux just BARELY believes in real coffee anymore. certainly NOT the emphasis.
Ooh I always get excited over new drinks at starbucks! These look great (although it’s so cold here right now I only get warm drinks lately)! Is the foam in your top left photo the “FIZZ?”
I read your “Trenta Size Cup” post for the first time and I’m still laughing over your list of names, Melody. That was a fun post ;-D
I think that there are a lot of smaller tests as well. For example, our store in Central NJ is testing decaf iced coffee. Not sexy or exciting but still a test (or so I’ve been told).
@CD – Sorry it took me so long to reply to you. Definitely the lime Refresher was my fave. The first round of Refreshers was slightly less sweet, and a more even taste from start to finish. Though I did kinda like the fizz. The first refreshers win out in my book. Taste is subjective! Either way, I think the Refreshers would be a nice welcome change of pace to the menu.
MELODY: Happy Veterans day to YOU, and I thank you.
I’d love to try these – they look delicious! But where in Washington are they, exactly? Are they in Seattle?
Melody, I agree! It would definitely be a nice option. I know they have the Vivanno smoothies and creme Frappuccinos, but I don’t really like the creme Frappuccinos. And there isn’t a huge variety of Vivannos. Though I do find them yummy!
These refreshers sound exactly like the canned version that will be tested in Arizona starting Tuesday.
Diele – It looks like I tried the barista-made versions before they became the canned versions. I have an article coming soon about the canned Refreshers, though I don’t have much to say about them yet!
You will when you get a package of all three flavors. =) I am trying to think if that is the only unique thing we have at the moment in the Arizona market.
