Starbucks has launched a “Starbucks Community Service” website for partners only as a place to get partners involved in volunteerism in their local communities. (Starbucks calls their employees “partners”.) I thought since this is the week of Thanksgiving, it would be appropriate to talk about community volunteerism. Here is the link to the website:
Starbucks Community Service website
If you are a partner reading this site, please go visit and join in! And be sure to come back here and tell us all the scoop on this! I am hoping people will be able to tell me about getting involved in their communities whether through food-bank volunteering, meal programs, park clean up, adopt a highway programs. Even the Seattle Symphony needs volunteers! I have stuffed envelops at Benaroya Hall! It takes a lot of man power to send out the mass mailings of programs, donation requests, or other symphony events.
Starbucks has partnered with Hands On Network in putting this site together. Through that partnership, Starbucks gains an extensive database of projects and non-profit organizations to partner with. Starbucks has a goal to donate one million community service hours by 2015, and this partnership gives them a real chance to facilitate that goal. By the way, if you wish to follow the Hands On Network on twitter, you can find them here – @HandsOnNetwork.
My understanding is that once a partner logs onto this site, some of the partner’s profile information has already been populated with data from starbucks.com. The partner can add friends, add a profile photo, and make selections as to which part of the profile are visible to the public.
There are four major areas to this website – A partner can “Lead” a volunteer opportunity. The partner selects which category the volunteering idea fits under, and after creating the idea can invite his or her friends to join in. A partner can “Join” an existing volunteer opportunity. A partner can use a search function to look for ideas to join, and then just clicks a “join” button. A partner then can “Record” his or her participation in the volunteer opportunity. This may be logging the number of hours volunteered or it may be keeping track of individual monetary donations too. Last but not least, a partner can “Share” his or her volunteering experiences. This section allows a very mini-blog like entry about how the partner liked the volunteer opportunity.
Some of you may remember that about two years ago Starbucks launched a combined partner-customer volunteering site: The V2V network. That site was never the success that Starbucks has hoped for. I can guess at some reasons why, but I would rather simply encourage partners to volunteer and check out the new Starbucks Community Service site.
Last year I took Thanksgiving week off from blogging, and I will be doing the same again. This is it. This is the last StarbucksMelody.com blog post for one whole week!
Since you have one week without any new blog posts, I want to encourage you to explore a few of the most popular and most enjoyable blog posts from the past:
- 15 pieces of Starbucks Flair – This is an old blog post, fun, but under-appreciated and under-viewed! 😉
- An introduction to C.A.F.E. practices – Another blog post, nearly a year old, but I like this one too.
- Barista Art – Contest entries and winners – One small thing that I am currently annoyed with Starbucks about is that barista chalk art is a dying tradition. Right now there are cut outs pasted (or somehow attached) to the chalk art boards. I want to see barista art. Even if it is bad art. Yes, marketing cut outs in every store only send the message, “could we be anymore cookie cutter?” This has been and still is a very popular blog post, and it has stood the test of time. It is still worth looking at!
- Starbucks Mazagran – A history lesson – A rare chance to learn about a failed Starbucks beverage from the early 1990s.
- The First Starbucks – 1912 Pike Place – This is your virtual trip to the Starbucks at 1912 Pike Place on a Summer day in Seattle. It’s an uplifting visit.
- Introducing Olive Way Starbucks – The only Starbucks with a beer and wine bar – If you want to see a stunningly beautiful concept Starbucks, this is it.
There are more blog posts that I would love to point out, but this blog entry would quickly get overwhelming. Check out the “Archive” of this site for old blog entries.
Now it’s your turn to weigh in on volunteering and Starbucks, or anything that is Starbucks-related. Enjoy!

I’m so surprised Melody that I had to find out about this first here. Great post by the way– as usual! I’m encouraging all my Partners to join and let’s get started doing great things for our community– together!
I too heard about this first from your blog! I will definitely take a look when I get a chance and let the partners at my store to come check out your blog and the new site. =)
This site is news to me! Awesome info. My area needs more stuff on that site, so I’m gonna brainstorm what we can do.
OK, I’m gonna double post.
Its very interesting to me that they created this site, instead of just revamping V2V. I like V2V, But visually, it wasn’t as pretty as it could be. It was cool that partners AND customers could get involved on V2V. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s how you and I connected. I REALLY hope that this site is successful. That partners do log in hours. And that this site inspires partners to put some volunteer hours on the board.
Well I’m not a partner so I am locked out of that but I just wanted to get my charity, Forgotten Children’s Fund, in. They bring the magic of Christmas to children in King, Pierce, Chelan, and North Counties in Washington state that normally would not have a Christmas. Their web site, and I hope the link comes through, is: http://www.ForgottenChildrensFund.org. Have a good week off Melody…you deserve it and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Hey that came through like I knew what I was doing. I also want to say that I registered it with http:/www.GoodSearch.com so anytime someone makes a search using Good Search or shops using their Good Shop and specifies Forgotten Children they will get a donation.
Oh phooey can’t all be perfect. The web site for the search engine is http://GoodSearch.com. There I did it right hopefully.
I sure understand your wanting to take a week off Melody and I too wish you a great break and lots of food and friends, but sure will miss your comments.
Enjoy the holiday Melody 🙂
My area definitely needs more events on there. I just searched it up, and it turns out we’ve only got one volunteering event!
The site layout is nice 🙂
@Steve @purple1 @amazonv @stsai01
@Steve – That seems like a good suggestion for this blog post. 🙂
@purple1 and @amazonv – Thank you. It will feel very weird. You may remember that back in Sept I promised ONLY 2 blog posts per week, and I have not followed that at all!
@stsai01 – Thanks for the info – hey did you hear about the new site from this blog post, or did you already know about it?
Oh Melody! Happy happy Thanksgiving to YOU. I feel you are a blessing in my life.
Thanks for the post on this Melody! Looks like a lot of partners are finding out about this for the first time right here, and that doesn’t surprise me since it’s so new. It’s a great site so far and I’ve already used it to sign up for a few upcoming events in my area. It’s kind of sad that V2V is not going to be used anymore but I’m not sure that Starbucks really had a clear vision for its use. Starbucks could have spent the $’s to revamp it, but I’m guessing that it was more cost efficient to partner up with an organization that has already proven itself in this particular area. @campsi was right on, when he mentioned that customer interaction is going to be missed, but the district community leads in my area (I’m one of them) have already filtered that feedback upwards. We’re told that there is some sort of fix for that in the works, but we don’t have a time-frame or an explanation as to what that might be. I hope that everyone gets really excited about this site, 1 million hours by 2015 is a pretty aggressive goal but it’s going to need a greater effort on our part to get out there and help our communities out. 😀
PS: Partners, don’t forget about the Starbucks Partner Match program, there’s links on this site! 😀
PSS: Have a great week Melody! Relax! 😀
Was the V2V network advertised? Even when I worked at Starbucks, I knew they encouraged community service but never saw anything about the V2V or any projects that were around. All I got was a feeling like if I had an idea the store might consider it, but that was about it. I hope this partner only site gets more partners involved in their communities.
I love that they are promoting volunteer work, but i’m not sure I see the benefit of making it partner-only. It would be nice if they added an area for the rest of the community to find and share volunteer projects. Thanks for passing the information along! 🙂
I’m not a Starbucks partner and I LOVE this idea 🙂 I sorta thought with all the community works that Starbucks and their employees do that this sort of website already existed behind the scenes 🙂 I didn’t realize that they had tried a customer/partner website in the past either. I like that they haven’t given up on the community service website idea – hopefully this one will work much better for Starbucks 😀
Great post Melody, as always! I find that Starbucks starting such a thing regarding volunteering is great, and the idea of making a site for volunteers is great. I hope this time Starbucks hits the dot with the new community site and I hope many partners take part.
Today is Thanksgiving so I just want to wish every single reader of this blog a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING filled with love and good food. I know I am extremely grateful for the regular participants here like Amazonv, wongster, diele, steve, purple1, CD, amyb, merryncole, DeniseR, CaBaristaGirl, CamSpi, hayley, LatteRose, Nob, Sebastian, Kaori, darkkatpouncing, GAStarbucksGirl, to name a few. A few regulars haven’t been seen for a while. :(. And I am sure there are some regular lurkers. There are some partners who I talk to who I know are regular readers but prefer to lurk too. Thank you to everyone, and I hope everyone today gets the joy of a dinner with someone you love and turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and lots of pie too!! Your friend, Melody (yes, I realize this is an American holiday, but now is this time for me to say thanks to all of you).
Melody it has been an absolute delight to get to know you and read your blog. I continue to say SB needs to follow your direction. Your comments and the community are stellar and just top notch. Happy Thanksgiving to you! As a vegetarian, I will pass the turkey to someone else but nonetheless enjoy today. Thanks Melody.
I am thankful for you and your blog; it’s great to connect with people and share our thoughts and experiences! I love reading and learning something new!
Thanks Melody for the mention. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I was invited out to a friend that used to work at Forgotten Children in Bellevue and since I don’t have a car she offered to pick me up since it would take 3 busses to get to her place but Mother Nature put very cold and icy monkey wrench into the plans so my Thanksgiving will be Sunday.

I realize how old this is but still…..Coming from a store where seriously NONE of the partners are artistically inclined I appreciate the chalk stencils!
Welcome Odessa! Hope you’ll poke around the site and “like” the facebook page. I wonder how the store’s managed before there were stencils. I have zero artistic talent and would like the stencils too, but I still think it is really great to see what the store partners come up with, no matter what it is. Welcome again. 🙂
hi am try to hold the partner working terms and cond could some help me where i can get them from . thanks
