I want to share with you an amazing merchandise item from Indonesia: A Starbucks planner. At the end of December I got a gift in the mail from Romie Johanes who is a Starbucks partner in Jakarta, and he is also the official voice of @SbuxIndonesia. It’s been a number of years since any planner has been sold in a United States Starbucks, and I have never seen any as thoughtfully designed as this 2011 Starbucks Indonesia planner. Notice that the inside of this planner includes a listing of every Starbucks location in Indonesia. The planner invites you to a coffee tasting: Every Starbucks store in Indonesia has a pre-scheduled coffee tasting time between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. I should make it clear that the planner isn’t exactly “sold” in Indonesia. A person collects stickers in order to earn the planner. To be honest, I am not sure how one collects the stickers.
I have to admit, that when I hear about the Starbucks overseas, I feel like I am missing out. From the passion I hear about in the international markets, it seems like those Starbucks are one step ahead of the United States. I don’t know, but I’m so impressed with every little journey we take internationally, and thankful to all the partners and customers abroad who are so passionate that they are helping this blog and community thrive. The excitement overseas with new store openings sounds nearly joyous from my vantage point, here in rainy Seattle.
The print in the Starbucks Indonesia planner is a little light, so it might be hard to read. I want to call your attention to the planner’s description of a “third place”. On this blog, and in the stores, we talk about the “third place” but rarely do we give it such an exquisite definition as this. With no further delay, here is the what the “third place” means in Starbucks Indonesia:
the third place
It’s not home.
It’s not workplace.
It’s that special place in between where
we meet to awaken our senses,
to find inspiration and
to make lasting connections.
The third place –
this is what we have become for you,
our loyal customer, our friend.
Every single day, we look for better ways to
create a unique coffee experience for you.
And it’s not just through the best tasting
brewed coffee that we serve, or the couch
you always want to sit on, or the way your
barista prepares your favorite drink.
It’s about transforming your ordinary day
into an extraordinary Starbucks experience.
And that’s something that always drives us
to make you want you to come back,
over and over again.
Notice that some of the months feature stores. The month of April features a Starbucks in the Ubud region of Bali, Indonesia which has a rare store design featuring all local and traditional Indonesian furniture. That store is the sixth store in Bali, and opened new in September 2010. For those who are curious, there are about 85 Starbucks stores in Indonesia. Starbucks Indonesia opened its first store on May 17, 2002.
If you’re looking more ways to connect with Starbucks Indonesia, you can be a fan of their Facebook page too:

Thank you to Molly at Seattle Custom Framing for her help with the photos.
Hope you enjoyed this little planner as much as I have. I know I didn’t get a picture of every single page but I hope this gives you a sense of what’s in the planner.

Treasure!
Thank you Romie Johanes official voice of @SbuxIndonesia. Terima kasih!
Thank you Melody for the awesome photos.
I’m pretty sure I’m jelious of this bad boy. I wish they woul give this to partners at least here in the us…
Good morning Christopher! it is 2:30 am in Seattle, must be even later where you are. That’s a great idea to have a planner maybe at the partner store, but I dont think Ive seen that. Nobu, it is a treasure!
Sorry so sloppy
Ok SB USA get on the bandwagon already and give us some of the design and vibe of the international stores! These international locations are just great. Thanks Melody for this posting. I too am jealous at what is available overseas. I love the planner too.
I love it that the certificate “could be evoked if misused” Conjures up visions of Howard waving his wand!
I really love these adventures…. Thank you & friends that help open the windows to other places.
The planner is awesome. It would be great if something like that were available in the US.
Oh this is SO COOL!!!!! I would give anything if Sbux here did this….. I was so disappointed this yr.(or last fall) that I didn’t find my usual-nice-for-writing-everything year and a half date book! They had one at least the last 2 yrs.
This book is just gorgoeus! This is exactly the kind of ‘stuff’ I’m wishing Sbux would get back to. (in the U.S.!)
WoW! THIS IS SO AWESOME! I want one so bad I’m considering packing my bags and moving to Indonesia! I’m so jealous :-/ why can’t we have neat stuff like this in the U.S.?
I love when Starbucks references themselves as a third place because I that image. It’s so warm and inviting…that is a great concept! The marketing team does a great job with the wording when they describe it to us, like in that planner.
oops that should ‘I just love that image’…not because I that image. Need more coffee I guess!
@Judy – Absolutely hilarious. I didn’t notice the small grammar/typo mistake on the planner certificate until you just now mentioned it. You are right about that mental image. Your comment gave me a good chuckle.
Thank you so much for sharing. I, too, wish that we sold planners in Canada. What a beautiful gift and thank you so much for posting pictures!
Wow, I wish we got more nice merchandise like japan and indonesia!
How amazing! More merch like for the Starbucks world, please! 😀
It is unanimous. Everyone loves this and wants to see this in the US. This would sell like hotcakes.
SBUX Int’l is where it’s at! I love the planner, and I especially love that description of the third place. SBUX U.S. really has lost that vision. 🙁
This is so cool, Melody. Thanks for sharing. I would love to have one of these. I love what they’re doing at SBUX International. I would like to see more products, offerings, etc., in our US Stores. There are so many items that SBUX has that isn’t even available throughout our country. For example, the “Reserve” coffees aren’t even offered in the Indianapolis market. This is pretty amazing to me. Granted Indianapolis isn’t the size of LA or NYC but we’re a major city in the US (heck, we’re hosting the Super Bowl next year!). Come on SBUX! Don’t forget about your loyal patrons here in the US!
Well, maybe this is just too selfish of me, but, since everyone HERE agrees we want more of this kind of stuff, as we used to have……I’m hoping the IDEA I put up on msi about “More Valentine Days stuff” goes up in votes. Everyone seems to agree and it still stays ‘negative’. This planner is an exquisite example of Sbux as it used to be, and should be.
Melody, I too agree. All we get is cups and candy(that’s ok,though) we in Evanston, IL, need some exciting snacks and gifts. My friend likes planners and so my sisters.I have to tell you, this pm Thursday, I met a gorgeous guy in my Sbux named Girard. He is quite tall, has a beautiful smile(my pick up line-you have a beautiful smile) and he had a large black laptop, I said: “yu have the daddy, and I have the baby-I have a black netbook)anyway, he lives west of Evanston, knows where my brother lives, the area that is.
by Interstate 90W. When I left, I said; “I hope to see you again, sometime”sounds kinda like Mae Wests “why don’t you come up and see me sometime, big boy?” ha ha Peggy
That is pretty cool. I could sure use one!
(@Judy – very funny! Now I’ve got this image of H.S. calling out “Accio!” – a la Harry Potter – to summon misused vouchers back to headquarters!)
I LOVE this. I would absolutely buy one if they were in the U.S. Or earn stickers to get one. Either way. 🙂
And I’d love to see something about this size made for holding a collection of Starbucks cards. I have a huge collection, and I’m sure I’m not the only one! It would be so fun to have something Starbucks branded specifically for this. It could be sold online or something—I can see where it would take up too much room in stores. Still, I’d buy one in a heartbeat!
Thanks for sharing the great pictures!
This is great
Melody, we all might be “missing out” but with so many great people out there you are getting some really nice surprises in the mail!
One of the reasons I really enjoy reading these posts is to see how thoughtful people are, genuinely nice in fact.
@pencil_to_paper – You would earn one of these in no time! Maybe they should be for people who get over 1000 stars! LOL! (j/k) @BostonStarbucksRebel – I’m glad you like it. @SuzanneC – That is such a positive way to see it. It love that attitude. Right on.
A planner! What a splendid idea!
You needn’t be envious about the Swedish Starbucks anyway, that’s for certain. I went to the airport last Wednesday (for my interview) thinking it could be a great opportunity to visit the only Swedish Starbucks. Only it turns out it’s tucked away after the security control at terminal 5, which is for international flights only. I ended up without that cappuccino I was longing for and I think it’s utterly stupid to keep it hidden away like that.
More Starbucks for Sweden!!
@LadyChuckles – You’re not the first person I’ve heard say that Sweden needs more Starbucks!

Ignore the point totals! On MyStarbucksIdea.com, lots of threads end up with all kinds of down votes. Anyway, you’re right, it sounds like you need a better Starbucks experience in Sweden. Airports rarely offer the best of what Starbucks can be! It’s not totally a third place if it is in an airport.
I think most of the Asian countries have that Starbucks planner. In the Philippines, we also have that sort of thing. The promo starts around November. Your goal is to collect stickers everytime you buy a coffee. I think you need to buy a certain number of holiday coffee and regular coffee. Once you complete the card with stickers you can claim the planner. (I don’t think it would be hard for you to collect the sticker, though.)
I have the 2007 and 2008 planner from the Philippines. And recently I bought a 2011 planner from Korea. I believe there’s also one from Thailand.
By the way, a percentage of the money earned during the promo will be given to their designated charity.
Here’s the site: http://philippines.starbucks.com/en-US/_Merchandise+and+Gifts/Starbucks+Planner+2011.htm
I’ll send you some photos if you like. 😀
Nice, got a lot of pixs and plenty of informations. Unlike Malaysian’s planner, so less pixs. Here you got to collect 12 stamps for a free planner, a stamp will be given for a grande or venti drinks. Or you could just buy it for RM 55 (Not sure how much in $), but most people didn’t know this! 😛 Luckily I managed to get 2. Hope next year will have better planner…
Hi,
Just found the site and loving what I see so far – we have these holiday planners in Malaysia as well where you can redeem one after buying x-number of drinks (including the holiday drinks), or if you’re me and you want to save some time, money and calories, you can also just flat out buy the planner (which is cheaper in the long run).
Here are pictures of the Malaysian planners (also a Korean one) that I uploaded unto Picasa – 2010 Starbucks Malaysia planner, 2011 Malaysian planner and the 2011 Korean planner
@Synical – Welcome to the blog! Please “like” the blog’s facebook page too (if you haven’t already). Through twitter, I know the person who is the official voice of Starbucks Indonesia. He is awesome. I owe him! He has sent me a couple of nice things from Indonesia, and this was definitely wonderful. I wish the US got these planners too.
Thanks for the welcome – yeah, I’ve been wondering why there are no planners in the US as well. But to be fair, I’ve been complaining about the lack of merchandise on this side of the planet as well (I’ve only just seen the reusable cup sleeves recently), etc.
