Tribute Blend Via Ready Brew by Starbucks is here and it’s flavorful and easy to use. In fact the great thing about Via is how incredibly convenient it is. I have to admit that I’ve become of fan of Via partly because it’s so quick and easy. Tribute Blend combines Aged Sumatra, sun-dried Ethiopian coffee, and Papua New Guinea. The Aged Sumatra gives it a lot of body, and the sun-dried Ethiopia adds some berry notes to the coffee. The whole bean version of this coffee has a lot of berry aroma.
But I want to talk about the Via Ready Brew version. In the Via version of this coffee I pick up more of the Sumatra flavor than any of the other flavors. The body of the coffee is pretty good considering it’s an instant version. In the whole bean version, I smell a lot more of the berry aroma when the beans have been freshly ground.
If you are going to make Via at home, you’ve got two big decisions. 😉 (1) Where do I get some hot water? and (2) What mug should I use?
Let’s first deal with, ‘where will I come up with hot water?’ One option might be your very old tea kettle:
Another option might be your reliable microwave:
Of course the much more difficult question is, ‘which mug do I use?’ When I open up my kitchen cabinets, and I see sight that looks something like this:
There are way more choices about which mugs to use than which way to make hot water! This might be a tough choice. Maybe I should use the Sumatra mug since there are some Sumatra beans inside Tribute Blend:
But I’m not sure why but this mug just isn’t calling out my name. Maybe the tiger isn’t looking too friendly today. Next choice might be the Clover mug:
Alas, at 16 ounces, that’s just a little too big for making Via. One packet of Via brews roughly about eight to ten ounces of coffee. I’ll just have to look at more coffee mug choices. There’s this old Seattle coffee mug with the Space Needle on it:
The old 1994 Seattle city mug suffers from the same problem as the Clover coffee mug. It is too large. That feels like it is about 18 ounces, though I’m not sure of its exact size. On to the next choice. Maybe I should use my very newest mug which is brown with a siren logo on it, or maybe I should just a very ornately designed 1990s era mug?
In the end, I finally decided to use my new logo mug because it is about the right size, and has the beautiful new logo on it just like the little package of Tribute Blend Via!
I poured the Via into a cup of hot water:
And moments later, I had a great cup of coffee:
So what do you think of Tribute Blend Via (or whole bean Tribute Blend for that matter)? I know that I really do enjoy how easy it is to make one single cup of coffee, and I like the flavor of Tribute Blend. I taste of lots of Sumatra, and you can’t go wrong with a cup of Sumatra!

You forgot Columbia which is also found in the Tribute Blend!
I am a HUGE fan of Tribute. I think this is one of the greatest blends we’ve offered. I still have yet to try the Via, but I’m going to get it as my mark-out this week.
Also a huge fan of the Via bandwagon, myself. Love the stuff. So easy to use, quick, continent.
Your mug collection is awesome! A large number of them I’ve never seen. But love love love that new siren mug. 😀
Ah Tribute Blend. By far my favourite seasonal offering since I worked at Starbucks and the VIA version doesn’t dissappoint. I would always choose wholebean version over the VIA version by choice, however the convenience and incredible flavour of a partially instant coffee product is just great,
Loving the mug selection. I do genuinely have this problem too. I bought a ‘Brown Double Walled’ mug which is my VIA mug. It has no handle but it’s double walled so you can hold it like a normal beaker and is around 10oz which is ideal!
This is great. Love the mug collection too. Have not yet seen the Via tribute blend. I was surprised to see that they are no longer brewing Tribute blend at my local SB.The manager says it will be back in a few weeks. So odd they took it away so fast. My husband really enjoys it.
I love your mugs, too…and especially the siren one! exquisite!
Have been really enjoying Tribute brewed every monr….like, at this moment!
I tried the VIA (Tribute) a fewd days ago….and finally bought some yesterday. I do like it too….yes, Sumatra comes thru for me. Not sure that it would replace Italian Roast as a regular for me, but I do like it and will keep it on hand. I do feel they could stop with VIA now….but, don’t see that happening!
off topic….wondering what people thought of the 20min survey that you may (or may not) have recvd on your opinion and ideas re: Sbux rewards??? interesting….
Denise R interesting you mentioned the survey- I started to fill out the first few questions and then was told I was excluded from finishing it. I am not in the group of customers they want to get opinions from. Sort of annoyed. You would think they would not exclude a loyal customer like me.
Melody sorry I wished I saved it but I tend to be too fast sometimes on deleting emails. I really am sort of bummed out that they did not want my opinion. Doesn’t make me feel good that they care about customer service and moving forward.
OH. Melody! I have a kitchen cabinet that look very similar! I LOVE the new logo and Tribute Blend graphics 😀
@Melody: I already DID fwd the survery to you!!!! (after I read about the comments on msi)
@Purple1: that happens to me, too…(NOT Sbux) where, for whatever reason, they find I don’t fit what they want. This was (as they forewarned) a time consuming survey…..I’d guess more than 20min.
anyway, Melody…you should have it in your email..or at least what I recvd to log onto.
I am not sure my exclusion was relevant to the length of the survey. I have taken surveys that lasted 20 mins. I would assume that they would want a cross section of the customer base and was just surprised to be excluded. I also know that companies look for certain groups that they feel will answer their questions within the marketing guidelines set up. Now, back to the original topic- tribute blend and via and the mugs. BTW Melody what is your oldest mug?- 1994 mug?
@Purple1: I didn’t imply (I don’t think) that you were excluded in that survey due to time. I don’t know why they accpeted anyone vs anyone else….probably any one of the reasons you mentioned. (or just a computer quirk)
I love your mugs
I thought it tasted like good coffee (not like pike)…so I like it but i still prefer tea 🙂
I will probably pick up a pack to keep in my desk for when i need a quick pick me up though!
I tried the Tribute Blend VIA and it was delicious.
I’m stocking up.
Excellent post and nice mug! 🙂
I worked late last night (a common occurrence as of late) and my energy was waning. I fixed myself a cup of the Tribute Via. It was delicious and perked me up for another few hours! Thanks Mel.
I’d much rather drink a cup of coffee than a cup of VIA, but…if I’ve got to have VIA that isn’t flavoured? Tribute VIA would be my choice. 🙂
I adore the Via, keep some in my purse in case of coffee emergency. Haven’t gotten to the part about where I will get boiling hot water and a mug in the actual emergency, but I digress. The Tribute Via is probably my favorite.
The best part of this post was your collection of mugs. The “Favorite Starbucks Mug” contest was missing your contribution – that post felt incomplete, left me wanting more…..but we got the whole cabinet in this one. Love it, that story is now complete. Closure at last.
;-)
wow, i love your blog, i’m a starbucks fan too, Tribute blend is also available here in the Philippines, i tried the brewed (coffee bean) version with half-and-half. I have yet to try the VIA version, i’ve always fancied sumatra. by the way, the other VIA varieties are sold buy-one-take-one here…
I bought VIA Tribute the morning it hit retail and I actually love it, I’ve been a massive fan of all the VIA blends and feel that VIA Tribute doesn’t disappoint. Whole bean is obviously better in general, but you can’t beat what is essentially a 2 minute prep time for the VIA version!
@Ael & @DonaldKelly – Welcome to the blog! Hope you’ll like the facebook page too! I think it might be time to stockpile on the Tribute Blend Via – It’ll be gone soon. It is the best 2 minute easy cup of coffee there is!
@SuzanneC – I just can’t pick a favorite mug. That’s about one third of my mug collection. There are a few more on other shelves, some more at my boyfriend’s house, and a significant number of mugs in my office!
HA! BERRY! That would explain it. I read this post second and in the post after this I mentioned that the Tribute blend jumps around on my tongue 🙂 That would be the berry effect 😉 and then the deep earthy taste. Love it…I’m REALLY wanting to taste the Via Tribute blend now…coffee coffee coffee lol
Oh my gosh Melody! I love this blog post! I love it because I’ve been obsessing over the Tribute Via – mostly because I love the packaging design – (I’m brewing my first cup of it as I read this blog) and also because I laughed out loud when I saw your mug cupboard! 🙂 I’m glad you chose the new logo mug, it’s perfect for this. See you later!
Nice post. I’m really enjoying the smooth flavour of Tribute whole bean, it’s a little stronger than I thought it would be so I felt the high! Starbucks were giving away whole bean coffee with a purchase of any hand-crafted beverage, and did this for two days two weeks running, so I grabbed two bags of Tribute. So glad I got it before it disappeared. 😀
The two stores I’ve been to recently are out of Tribute. I was sad. I hope the next time I’m in they have it. I really like it. But I’m a bold coffee girl.
I love this post Melody!
@Coolwatyr — out of Tribute whole bean or VIA? If you’re looking for the via, good luck! If you’re looking for the whole bean, there should be plenty still around. I know my store has quite a bit still!
Of course, you can *always* ask the partners to find it for you — if they don’t have it, they can look up in the system (depending on the store, the management partners might be the only ones who know how to do this — not all baristas know/have been taught the procedure) and tell you what other stores nearby do have some!
