Announcing the first Starbucks in Orange County, California to receive a Clover brewer, and it’s in Irvine! Located on the corner of Culver Boulevard and Irvine Boulevard, this beautiful, newly-remodeled Starbucks, has the Clover and a full line of Reserve coffee offerings. (The Reserve coffee offerings are limited, smaller batch coffees produced by Starbucks.) The Clover coffee brewer, for those who do not know, is a state of the art single cup coffee brewer that creates a perfect single cup of coffee with a flavor profile somewhat like a French press. It works like an upside down automatic French press, and has brew settings that can be customized to suit the particular coffee desired. No other single cup system (or instant coffee) can match the body, full flavor, and perfection created by the Clover coffee brewer. Unfortunately, the Clover brewer is an extremely expensive piece of equipment, and the cost of a cup of coffee from it is higher than just buying a brewed cup of coffee. Starbucks has been slowly and judiciously launching the Clover into Starbucks stores with a customer base that will support it. As I write this, there are roughly about 140 Starbucks stores in the corporation that have a Clover brewer.
My understanding is that this Starbucks has had its Clover about two months. I hear this store is the hot spot Starbucks of Orange County. I didn’t come to California to visit this store, but I heard about it from a partner in Laguna Hills, and realized that it wasn’t too far from my mom’s house and so it would be easy to squeeze in a visit. The store is absolutely beautiful and styled in the “heritage” style, with lots of reclaimed wood, and repurposed materials.
I decided to drop by this Starbucks on the afternoon of the 25th. Here’s the address:
Starbucks store #5741
Corner of Culver Blvd. and Irvine Blvd.
3997 Irvine Blvd.
Irvine, California 92620
(714) 734 – 9757
The store manager, David Wilmot, was working when I dropped by. Thankfully, he welcomed me completely into his store, and even offered to sample a new coffee with me on the Clover, if there was one that I hadn’t yet tried. He welcomed me to take photos and show off his beautiful store. (He seemed to be completly aware of the 2009 revised Starbucks photo policy, which allows photographs to be taken in the stores, if for non-professional, non-monetized uses.) I had a delightful time talking with David who truly is part of a Starbucks family. He told me this adorable story how he married a shift supervisor at Starbucks, and now has lots of cute pictures of his daughters visiting Starbucks.
It was a fairly warm day in Orange County, reaching into the low 60s, so I ordered an iced Kenya from the Clover and paired it with the petite lemon square. While I was there, one of the store’s regulars came by and definitely wanted to rave about how much she liked the store. (I think she said her name was Trish.)
The strangest thing happened while I was there. I couldn’t make this up if I tried. On the flight down to Orange County, I sat near a man who I ultimately learned is David C. in store design at the Starbucks corporate headquarters. Some of you might remember that on the 24th, shortly after the annual Starbucks meeting, I caught a plane from Sea – Tac Airport to Orange County. David and I chatted only briefly, and of course I told him all about the blog. That was about it.
Oddly, 24 hours later, on the 25th, I ran into him at this Starbucks in Irvine. It was the strangest thing to walk in and think, ‘hey there’s that SSC guy from the plane trip down here.’ He remembered me as well and appeared to be equally in shock to run into me in a Starbucks in Orange County. There are plenty of Starbucks in Southern California! We made small talk, and chatted about the Clover, and then he had to leave after just a short while. He introduced me to another person on the store design team, whose name I cannot remember unfortunately.
There are lots of beautiful Starbucks all over Orange County, and I wasn’t even originally planning on going to this store, and so I am still stunned at this coincidence. It reminds me again that somehow Starbucks seems like a very small world.
I didn’t really plan a store review so I took just a few photos with my phone, but I got enough that I can show them off here. I stayed long enough to wait for a few of the seating areas to clear out, so I could show off this beautiful store. Unfortunately, a few of the photos are blurry. Sorry.
Enjoy!
(I will eventually go back and fix typos. Sorry. I wrote this blog post sitting at Orange County airport because my Alaska Airlines flight was delayed significantly. Where is Howard’s jet when I need it? j/k! LOL)

I love how you kept bumping into David C. The store pics look great and really enjoy the reclaimed materials look that Starbucks has been incorporating into their stores and revamps 🙂 I really enjoy Clover brewed coffee. I was able to try some over at the Starbucks in Renton (over by the Renton Uwajimaya) The ladies there were fun and professional and it was a definite trip watching the clover in action. The coffee was rich and pretty intense! (It was a xmas blend) Very yummy!
My stores eventually going to get a clover. I can’t wait! We just started getting the Reserve coffee’s and its amazing how fast they fly off the shelves. We keep selling out of them a day or two after we get a shipment. I just wish we had the clover to really show off these wonderful coffees.
Melody what a great review and pics! Am jealous. The SM sounds so nice and it is nice to read that he met his wife at SB. Sure sounds like this store is a community and welcomes their customers. I would love to have more specific info about what SB means about customer base has to support the clover. Certainly, I think my local SB would have the customer base to have a clover.
What a beautiful store! and truly so weird about David C., but….not totally unexpected. extraordinary things happen. Wish I could have met you there and sat with a coffee. (Clover, of course)
No way! That Irvine store — one of my regular haunts, especially when I’m heading home — has a Clover! Yay! Sorry I missed meeting you.
@deniser – I’ve often believed that the expression “truth is stranger than fiction” is often true! The odds of that happening were remarkable. We could have more easily missed each other by a few hours, but nope, on that Friday afternoon I drove from my mom’s house to that store in Irvine and there was the SSC partner I knew! It is a beautiful store! Agreed.
@Pam – From reading your tweets and comments here I think we have some of the same Orange County haunts! My brother and sister in law (and a sister too) live in southern OC, and my mom very north OC, so I bet we’ve been to many of the same places. We had had lunch at Citrus City Grille in old town Orange, (one of my mom’s fave restaurants) and then later that day I headed to Irvine and found this great store!
They’re bring the Clover closer and closer to AZ…that is probably a 7-8 hr drive for me though. I still have hope they will introduce one in AZ.
I think it wouldn’t be outrageous to have just 1 in every major city, or state at least.
Even though I’m in AZ I still drink mostly hot beverages and there is always iced Clover coffee!
How exciting! I can not wait to try a cup of Clover Verona. I wish we had one in Arizona.
@Diele If I hear of one in AZ I will let you know…and if you hear of one in AZ please do that same! My twitter name is wildflower_eyes I don’t know if you’re on Twitter.
@darkkatpouncing & @Chase – I didn’t want to neglect you two my friends! You are way at the top of this comment thread. Kat – The thing with running into David C. just still amazes me. My timing was amazing. Chase – Just a big congrats that you are getting a Clover! I want to hear more when it happens! Heck, if we plan it right, I might come visit you and your store! Where are you at? Email me please to Melody at StarbucksMelody dot com.
If you were at the Citrus City Grille, did you sneak a peek at the Starbucks in the historic Wells Fargo Bank bldg.? Speaking of Old Towne Orange, your Mom may like “Paris in a Cup.” It is a bit pricey, but my Mom and I splurged for a tea, and it was very, very nice.
When’s your next trip?
I still haven’t gotten the chance to partake of a Clover brewed Starbucks coffee. The only Clover I’ve ever seen was at an independent coffee shop in CA that bought theirs before Starbucks bought out Clover. I’m hoping that eventually a store here in Fresno will get a Clover with a remodel in the near future. I must say, I’m a little jealous!
Funny you should mention about the clover being at an independent coffee house because I went to an independent coffee house about a week ago and lo and behold there was a clover there! Once SB bought out clover did that mean no independent coffee house had rights to a clover? I am not sure how long this coffee house had theirs.
Paris in a Cup sounds like a great place. Has SB stopped offering samples of their coffees and teas because of late I have not seen any in my local SB?
Melody!
I was just at that store on the 15th! We were staying in Orange County for a family vacation.
I went specifically to try the Clover brewed coffee, since I live in Utah where there are no Clovers. 🙁
This store seemed just average as we walked up to it, but when we went inside I was so impressed. It is BEAUTIFUL inside! Of course I LOVED the Clover brewed coffee. Truly the best way to enjoy a cup. And… my vacation souvenir turned out to be 6 half pounds of Reserve coffees and a Reserve mug (my new fav.) I’m so excited that you went there too. 🙂
My Store Manager just told me that a store in Colorado just got or is going to get a Clover brewer, the first and only in our region.
What fun!
Jennifer
@purple1 – After Starbucks bought the Clover, there was no way for an independent coffee house to get one. The ones that already had their Clover could keep them, though maintenance could be a problem. I always recommend that if you are in Seattle, you should visit Trabant Coffee which is a great indy house with a Clover.
@Pam – My next trip to OC might be September this year. Funny, I realize that I write about Orange County Starbucks almost as often as Seattle – There are really a lot of blog posts on this site featuring or talking about OC Starbucks. In September, my mom’s most recent husband (one of many husbands! LOL) is having a birthday, so I’m thinking it will be a fast trip down and back again.
I can’t believe that this would be the first starbucks to have a clover in orange county. It makes me appreciate the fact that a lot of Boston stores have them. Although, I wish the store that I frequent the most had one but I realize that it would never happen because of the size.
@JLove – That is awesome that you have been to this store! I had the same reaction too – From the outside you have no sense of how beautiful it is when you walk inside! I’ve heard about lots of new Clover stores coming. It’s getting very hard to keep up with. Starbucks seems to have suddenly amped this up. I think Bellingham, WA is slated to get a Clover, as well as Austin, TX, and I’ve always thought Denver could use one!
@Melody: I mentioned to my regular place a while ago that you might be coming here. Since then I’ve been asked about 4 times….is Melody coming here? we want her to do our store.
So, keep Chicago in the back of your mind…..
@DeniseR – I guess I’ve been so bad. I tend to travel to familiar places, so I make tons of trips between Seattle & Calif. What if I came over Memorial Day weekend. I’ve just taken a bunch of time off, so I really should plan this around a holiday. It’s about a 2 and half hour flight between Seattle & Chicago, and there are direct flights on Alaska. It’s just much more scary! I have to figure out where to stay & transportation. What if I came to your Clover store (or any store of your choosing) on Sunday, May 29th? I would hope that we could squeeze in getting together with CD too. He’s a great guy!
Wow, between the mural, the wood and the beautiful cafe seating I’m jealous. It looks so fresh and inviting.
@Melody: yes!!!!!! I will e-you. 🙂
and @CD: I’m thinking we could meet you at the Harlem &Lake store in Oak Pk. (the one we both like….as does Chgobr….. who is m.i.a. ????)
Some of us native Californians get chilly when temps dip below 68 degrees. That’s what I call “mocha weather!”
I love running into people at Starbucks.
Today I had one customer order a double tall latte. I asked for her name and confessed I’d seen her in my store more than once, but never got her name the first couple of times. And it sparked off this convo how she knew my sister and another friend, and sees stuff I say on her facebook newsfeed sometimes!
*Its a small world after all*
Like they said in the shareholder’s meeting, Starbucks is the first degree of separation, no more Kevin Bacon. LOL!
Hi – been out of town and noticed the talk of coming to Chicago. If you do decide to visit the windy city, Intelligentsia has a tour the first Saturday of each month. http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com/about/public-tours
I think it would be nice if Starbucks would be a bit more open about their Clover strategy (and challenges). It would be nice to know how many they were planning on installing, the challenges with sourcing the special coffees, etc. SOMETHING/anything to help set expectations as I am sure there are many customers out there that are waiting for Clover to reach their town/area.
@CD – Those are some really good questions! I know that as I write this there are about 140 Clover Starbucks in the company. I would love to know if there is a stopping point? 800 Clovers, 1000? Because at some point, if it scales too big, the coffees aren’t really small batch coffees anymore. I assume that right now Clovers are going in stores with a track record of being high brew, and in urban markets affluent enough to support the higher price point of Clover coffee.
Just came back from my local SB and really would love to understand why this store does not have a clover. Certainly, the demographics should be there. How much is space a consideration?
@Purple1 – I know that space is a consideration. There is a Starbucks inside the Key Tower Building in downtown Seattle that sells so much brewed coffee that they brew decaf, bold, and Pike all day from morning to close. The store has been used as an example for training, and has like four brewers. It’s incredible. But it’s too small for a Clover. I can’t think of a small Clover store. Now that would be an interesting question: What is the smallest Starbucks that has a Clover? The store essentially has to have enough space to plumb it for the Clover plus it’s about the size of adding yet another espresso machine – Maybe a little smaller, but space is a real issue.
@purple1 – Though the more I think about it, the more I don’t know! LOL. I might be talking out my a**!!! I know that the store manager of 1912 Pike Place would love to have a Clover. That is a very small store. Also since it’s designated an historic building, it is very very difficult to get permits to re-plumb it.
Melody I have been to the 1912 Pike Place store so am aware of its size. I wonder if some of these stores can renovate their space (if historic consideration is not as issue) and provide a clover. However, I do understand an earlier post you wrote re saturation and when to stop. Also, just found out that a Pinkberry is moving alongside the new SB in Harvard Square. (sometime in spring)
a little off but: the story contest over at the other place (msi)….250 words?????? how would that be possible??? oh my gosh……
Hey Melody!
I just wanted to drop you a note here that I hope to be showing this post to my manager with hopes it makes it to our DM’s eyes. We have a sort of similar store with some of the same furniture, and we are pushing for a couch 😀
As always, I’m still reading, and I talk your blog up whenever I can. I miss talking to you as much as I use to. it’s my fault, just to busy anymore…
Awww Christopher thank you for the props and talking about the blog. Word of mouth is the best advertising ever! (or so they say!). Actually, I hope you get more than a couch! Are you a Reserve store? Are there any near you?
Thank you for dropping by! You know how to find me by email or twitter too.
Starbucks is the most horribly loud place you could ever visit. The music they play makes me sick to my stomach. No one even requests the music to be turned up. But I always ask them why it is so loud. When I ask them to turn it down (so I can actually have a conversation), they never really turn it down. More like, they just touch the knob and walk away. So I don’t care what kind of coffee they sell. The terrible ambiance of music I would never want to hear in my lifetime being forced down my ear channels at levels that are rude and obnoxious is an insult to even the worst coffee. What I want are independent coffee shops that have no relationship with Starbucks whatsoever. I like Philz in Palo Alto on Middlefield. That’s the place for me. So I guess I’m out of luck in Orange County. Kéan is not that great. Alta iikewise.
@Mark: hmmmmmm, well I guess that’s a reason to post on a Starbuck’s blog site…but I hope you remember: this is not MSI. It just sounds like you are not a fan of Sbux, at all. ???
Denise, I saw this comment and debated even about approving it. I wondered if Mark realized this is a fan site. The music being too loud is annoying. Seems like it is not just Starbucks – many retailers have very loud music in their stores. Thankfully not all Starbucks are lilke that.
Thank you so much for your great website. I will visit this store during business trip in Sep. I would like to taste the blue mountain reserved coffee. Thank u again.
@Toshi – Thank you for dropping by the blog! Please “like” the blog’s facebook page too. You will like that store in Irvine. Very delightful, and the partners were pretty enthusiastic about having a Clover brewer. However it’s not likely you’ll find any Jamaica Blue Mountain. I think that company-wide the JMB is sold out. I was surprised to see like two bags of it at one store in downtown Seattle, but most stores near me have none left. When you go in, ask the baristas about what kind of limited coffees that they’re offering. You’ll find something you like!
