Name a Starbucks that has a fireplace, 2 Clovers, reclaimed wood throughout, a child’s play area, and a business meeting room. If you said, “Streets of Woodfield Starbucks in Schaumburg, Illinois,” you would be correct. I visited this store on May 29, 2011, and I want to share a little about this store with you.
I didn’t get to meet the manager because he was on vacation, though I met “Carl, the Clover master,” and Paul Overly, the district manager. Paul led a really fun guessing coffee tasting, where he put me on the spot and didn’t tell me which coffees I was drinking. I got a kick out of guessing the coffees, though sadly, I don’t think I earned a passing grade. We tasted Rwanda Gakenke, Sumatra Tapanuli, and Tribute Blend.
This is a gorgeous store. It’s so large that I felt like I needed a map. 😉 I tried to take pictures, and converse with others I’d met up with there, and do the coffee tasting too. I think I didn’t take enough pictures because I was preoccupied by conversation, so I fear the photos below don’t do the store justice. There is tons of comfy seating throughout the store. On one wall is art work depicting the mechanics of the Clover brewer! A helpful illustration, indeed! There is a long bar area with lots of seating. The outdoor patio is large with nice woven (wicker-like) seating, a step above typical patio furniture. Throughout the store, fallen trees and reclaimed wood were used for the woodwork. Some of the columns, as well as the wainscoting, are painted in a black paint which apparently has a fine coffee ground mixed into the paint! My understanding is that the fireplace and floor tiling were part of the original design before the major remodel, and were unchanged when the store was remodeled. Notice that the child’s play area has a small plastic table shaped like a caterpillar, and a small chalk board.
This Starbucks very first opened February 25, 2000, and was relaunched as a Clover location in March 2010. This store was the first in the Midwest to offer any of the Reserve line of coffees. At about 4,500 square feet, it IS one of the largest stores in the Starbucks North America. It is true that there are few larger stores, such as the newly-opened and highly acclaimed Harvard Square Starbucks (opened May 20, 2011), and also the Riverwalk Starbucks in San Antonio, Texas, which was once a HEAR Music Starbucks. I recognize that some of this might be disputed facts, but I’ve heard that the largest store in North America is the San Antonio Riverwalk store about 5,900 square feet, and that the Harvard Square may be a close second. Both of those two stores are two story. (You can follow the Starbucks Harvard Yard on twitter here.) In short, at 4,500 square feet, that’s huge and is probably up there as at least one of the largest stores in the United States.
The store is called “Streets of Woodfield” because it is situated very close to the “Streets of Woodfield” shopping mall, which is the largest shopping mall in Illinois.
While I was visiting, I noticed that every little detail seemed to be attended to. I saw partners double checking the condiment area, keeping the lobby clean, and it looked like the line and drinks kept moving at a pretty steady pace. This store appeared to be on their game. As I said, my photos don’t do the store justice. It’s a must-see if you’re in the Chicago area. The store is not too far north of Chicago, in Schaumburg. Here’s the address:
Starbucks Store 2344
Streets of Woodfield Starbucks
601 North Martingale
Suite 370
Schaumburg, IL 60194
(847) 605 0476
What do you think? Do you want to see more stores like this?
Last but not least, I highly recommend browsing through the “Store Review” category on this site. The store review category is almost entirely reviews and photos of Starbucks stores that I personally have visited. I have managed to write about stores in both northern and southern California, throughout Seattle and the greater Seattle area, a few stores in Texas (a few in Austin, one in Bedford, Texas, and one in Southlake, Texas), and now a few stores in Illinois. Makes me wonder where I should go next?

What a beautiful large store…every detail seems to be perfect. That is so cool!
But I am missing the Starbucks logo…where is it? I just see a Clover sign near the door outside. 😀
Ok it is not fair that around here we do not have a store like this! It looks so nice and welcoming. Having comfy chairs near a fireplace is ideal for sure. Curious if people are staying longer at this store? Is there an issue with people finding seating even if it is a big store? Love it Melody thanks.
Thank you for posting this. I wasn’t aware of this store and I’m in Schaumburg at least once or twice a month. I will definitely check this out the next time I’m up there.
When I lived in Schaumburg in the late 70s, Woodfield was the largest mall in the world!
This IS truly a breath-taking store….from the physical size and beauty (yet, cozy) down to the attention to detail that is seen in the partners. I’ve been there quite a few times and they ALL seem to be friendly and knowledgeable all the time.
I have more pics of this store, I will look for “is there the logo”. more on this later! beautiful store, beautiful thread! Thanx Melody!
Wow! The store is amazing! It’s so beautiful. I love the circular condiment area, it’s so fresh and new! And the children’s play area is so cute!
I am kind of disappointed with the meeting room though, it doesn’t seem as classy and warm like the other areas of the store.
Yes, of course we would like to see more stores like this. 🙂
I live in Chicago but don’t really have any good excuse to go out to the suburbs to check out a Starbucks. So, I’m living vicariously through your adventures.
And it’s fun to see different/unique stores.
WOW! THIS STORE LOOKS AMAZING!
It’s hard to say if people stay longer here…..I’d guess yes, I guess they do. (especialy inviting for many with the new all-free-wifi’.) Amazingly, there is always someplace to sit. It may not be one’s first choice, but still always …when I’ve been there…very good options.
Just wanted to clarify,….. it’s located in the Streets of Woodfield, which is an outdoor shopping area very NEAR Woodfield mall, but they’re not the same. And yes, for quite a while, Woodfield (indoor) mall was the largest in the world. The “field” part is named for Marshall Field…… which was (until Macy’s got it 🙁 one of the anchor stores of the mall.
re: the meeting rm. I have to say, the rest of this place is so warm and beautiful and cozy and friendly, the meeting rm is functional and ‘ok’ but much less significant!
Denise you are so lucky to be near this SB. I really can see sitting there especially in winter near the fireplace and enjoying my drink. I am glad to hear that there are usually chairs for people to relax. How many partners are there on the floor at one time?
I think those photographs show the store with the fewest number of customers I have ever seen – it’s a very popular (and truly) “third place.”
I really like this store, but don’t get to it very often. I’m happy you got to visit it!

What timing, I am headed to Chicago on Monday and will be staying within blocks of this store. Now I have to make time in a busy schedule to check it out.
Love the fireplace of course! I was drawn to the circular condiment stand as well…I definitely haven’t seen many of those!
Also, that conference room is a great addition! I assume it has to do with the area the Starbucks is located at. I think that’s a great feature for bringing in the small group projects and meeting of the businesses close by!
Well I have Denise to thank for introducing me to this store. I was totally oblivious to the fact that it even existed as a Clover Store. Every time I headed to Woodfield Mall, I would stop at my local Starbucks on the way out there and ignore it. I don’t know how this store stacks up to so many of the other stores Melody has ever visited, but this store is just awesome! From the minute you walk in the door and just see what it has to offer besides the Clover, your like wow! It”s the coolest Starbucks I’ve ever seen. I’m sure Melody has seen better though.
Melody,
Woodfield is named for former Sears board chairman General Robert E. Wood and Marshall Field and Company founder Marshall Field. Pretty cool. One of the companies which developed woodfield was Homart, which was a division of Sears. Originally Streets of Woodfield was an indoor mall, geared toward the discount crowd. Unfortunately, nearly all of the major tenants closed up shop so in the early 2000’s the mall was “demalled” and turned into a strip center. As you can see, that was a benefit for the mall. Where the Starbucks sits was the main “concourse”. If I remember correctly, there was a Filene’s Basement in this slot with a food court on the upper level. The theater dates back to the times of the indoor mall.
There are a number of Starbucks in/around Woodfield – including two in the mall proper.

I’ve never been so impressed by a Starbucks. There should absolutely be more locations like this.
Hi Anthony! I have many comments in this thread that I need to reply to but I’ve been overwhelmed lately. But I so agree, this was a totally impressive store. Totally impressive.
I would love to work here. I work at a small drive-thru store. We have a small lobby but a very busy drive-thru. I wish our store was this elaborate and extensive. Props to you for visiting! I’m as green as my apron with envy! =)

@ Andy – I was born and raised in Chicago, and never new the history of where the name Woodfield came from. Interesting…..
As I sat at my local SB this am, I thought about this store and so wished it was here. BTW just curious who takes care of operating the fireplace and do they use wood in it? Such a nice SB as has been said.
@purple1: the fireplace is gas but still, very cozy. I don’t know who is charge of that….I mentioned to one of the people we were with that day: too bad the fire’s not on…I was freezing due to rain and also a/c maybe??? expecting high temps that never happened that day. Suddenly, the fires were going! ??? I would guess there are maybe 6 partners working at most times. I have always seen 2 near the food and register, 2 near the bar and Clovers, and some thru=out the store. Everything, as Melody wrote, does always seem tended to.
And yes, it’s always plenty of customers, but somehow (huge space?) always a decent spot to sit….
Thanks Denise. I really did not think the fireplace used wood. I truly wished that SB would devote more attention to their other stores re design and community as they did with this store. I also think having an opportunity to hold meetings in the conference room provides an added link to the community which other SB stores do not have. I also understand that space availability is an issue. But, as I drive around it still amazes me how many for rent signs there still are with spaces that could certainly make a nice SB location!

In Schaumburgh as we speak, this was my first stop. Not only spurred by your blog post but also for the free wi-fi to find my hotel as my phone had died shortly after leaving O Hare. Lovely store, love the reclaimed wood, crazy busy as well. Still a little more drawn to the concept stores at the present time but if this represents a standard store on steroids then the store development team is certainly headed in the right direction.
WHOA, This store is incredible! I want a big bold store in our city.
I come here often and really enjoy this place and the atmosphere. This is such a great place to work and meet other people as well.
Hi Justice! What a GREAT name you have! Though finding Justice is sometimes easier said than done. I’m a lawyer in real life, and this blog is a hobby. Sorry to get sidetracked. Thanks for the comment – I am very impressed with this store too. It’s great to hear the partners make that store a wonderful atmosphere. If you like this blog, I hope you’ll click “like” on the facebook page widget in the right column of this blog. Many thanks!

Wow that’s a huge store. I can go there everyday and sit on different area per day.
