Let me just say that I never went out of my way to try and collect Starbucks city mugs. It just happened. I have a very small collection of them. Too small to even be called a “collection”. However, I know these mugs are a big deal to many folks and that lots of people collect them. So here is the story of my city mug collection:
**Pike Place Market – I bought this mug at the store at 1912 Pike Place, in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Because I still like the original store, I thought I should have this mug. I have found myself visiting this store increasingly less often because close by is another great Starbucks on the corner of First and Pike Street. (Please note that Pike Place and Pike Street are different streets, running opposite directions). I need to get back to 1912 Pike Place soon. It is still a Starbucks with a La Marzocco espresso machine. Every drink is handcrafted just for you.
**Boston – Last summer, I took a trip to Boston to visit my sister in that area. I figured that since I was in Boston, I might as well buy a mug. I grabbed a city mug.
**Portland – In November last year I drove to Tigard, Oregon to do a store review for this blog. Click here for the store review. I was just outside of the city of Portland, in Tigard, and figured since I had driven that far, I might as well pick up a mug.
**Vancouver – I was at one of my favorite Starbucks at First and Pike Street in downtown Seattle and I saw this mug. I had actually made a trip into the store knowing that it would be a wonderful place to take pictures of sparkly donuts because of its beautiful store design, and the store has really lovely for-here ware. My previous blog episode on the mini sparkle donut is here. This unique store sometimes receives unusual merchandising because it is dubbed the “heritage” store design, and it is still considered one of the Starbucks showcase design stores.
I was at First and Pike, saw the Vancouver mug and thought, ‘where have I seen that bridge before?‘ Then I remembered the Via Ready Brew road trip episode with Brad Nelson walking over a suspension bridge in Vancouver, Canada! I asked a barista about the merchandising and was told their store received a very limited number of exclusive items for Canada because of the Olympics. If you would like to watch Brad Nelson walk over the Capilano suspension bridge in Vancouver, click here. For those readers who do not know, Brad Nelson’s claim to fame is that he is the official voice of the Starbucks twitter profile. Who knows, he may be famous for other things, but that I wouldn’t know! Notice that in the YouTube video, Brad is using a Starbucks Vancouver city mug to drink his Via Ready Brew.
**Seattle – I bought the Seattle mug at the same time as the Vancouver mug. I figured why buy just one mug?
**Ohio, Dallas, Houston – All of these mugs were unexpected wonderful surprise gifts to me. As at times I have given coffee away to people, or connected with other Starbucks enthusiasts through social media, and at times I have been surprised by an unexpected package or gift of a city mug. I’m touched by thoughtfulness of the people around me. You see, this is part of the beauty of Starbucks: It has this odd power to connect people with really big hearts.
For the Ohio mug, I have been told that the boat featured on the mug is this riverboat featured here: http://www.bbriverboats.com/
Anyone else here collecting these mugs, and if so, which is your prize mug?
This is also an open thread. I welcome any Starbucks related conversation in the comments.
Thank you again to Larry of Seattle Custom Framing for his assistance with the photography in this blog entry.

Mine is my Paris mug 94. It was a gift from a friend and it was so random. I’ve always wanted to visit Paris so that explains my fascination over this mug 😉
I have several favorites! I really like the look of the Architect city series – Seattle, Chicago, & New York. Let’s see, a United Kingdom mug (from ’99). And a Barista series with both the old & new logo, received as a gift not too long ago. A good heavy mug.
I’ve also got a fair number, but not nearly as many as the serious collectors. For me my favorite is also my first–it’s from Chiang Mai, Thailand. We were walking down a street and spotted a Starbucks. It seemed so oddly out of place that we went in. It was just like Seattle (including the prices, which meant they were astonishing high compared to everything else in Thailand). And I spotted a Chiang Mai city mug. Had to get it.
That started a pattern of trying to search them out. The only downside to collecting them is that you pretty much have to hand carry them in your luggage, which means if you managed to get several on one trip things start to get heavy and fragile.
Case in point–I found a Starbucks in Amman, Jordan that had mugs from all of the countries in the Middle East that had Starbucks stores. I did NOT buy all of the choices available (even though a part of me really wishes I would have). And, those may not really count since they are country mugs, not city mugs even though the mug for Jordan has a picture of Petra, the rock city on it. That one’s probably my second favorite.
Melody, Are these mugs all a new style of city mugs. I have some city mugs from way back when and they don’t have the color on the inside of the cup and look quite a bit different in style.
I had 2 mugs that I remember….Los Angeles 02 and Chicago 99….and they both chipped rather easily…so I tossed them.
Melody says this is an open thread, so here goes!
I moved to Seattle in 1981 and began going to Starbucks in the early to mid-80s. I was a big fan for quite a few years. Things began going downhill around 1999 or 2000. The issue for me today isn’t that Starbucks is no longer “cool.” It isn’t that their service isn’t perfect, or that it’s reliably bad. It’s that it isn’t reliably good, and when it’s bad, it’s very bad. I believe that a couple of years ago, Howard Schultz said the slump in Starbucks’ business was not due to customer dissatisfaction with the end-to-end experience. He may have been correct about many or most customers, but he wasn’t about me!
Before the downhill slide, when I had the occasional less than optimal experience at Starbucks, I would speak to the store manager or to a customer service representative at HQ. Either they would acknowledge that things hadn’t been handled well, or they would give me a plausible reason why things were done the way they were. I was perfectly happy with the latter outcome, even when I didn’t agree with the policy–I felt that I had been heard.
In 1999 or 2000, I started encountering the following problems:
1) Not getting my drink made the same way every time, even though I was ordering it the same way every time. And my drink of choice is usually pretty straightforward. I’m not one of those obsessive people whose drink order takes over 10 words and 5 seconds to say.
2) Inability of store managers and customer service representatives to even understand what the issue was in some cases. In one instance, I went through 5 minutes of “who’s on first?” with a CSR, and she finally made a comment that showed that she didn’t have a clue what the issue was. I should have asked to speak to her supervisor, but I was too frustrated. I said, “Thank you for your time,” and hung up. She was lucky that I didn’t just hang up. I later ran this incident past one of my favorite baristas at my local Starbucks, and she said, “Many of the customer service people have never worked the stores and have no clue what goes on in the stores.” I did finally get a solution to the issue that was involved here, but I had to talk to 4 people to find one who even understood what I was getting at. How would you like it if only 1 barista in 4 could make your drink correctly? It’s one thing not to have one’s concern addressed; it’s another thing not to have it even understood. The expression “talking to the wall.”
3) Poor people skills, and (in a couple of cases) outrageous, insufferable rudeness by baristas.
So–effective several years ago, I won’t set foot in a Starbucks unless I’m desperate for a caffeine fix and there’s nothing else nearby. I have never once been seriously annoyed with an indie coffee place. A couple of baristas at indie places have told me I’m one of their favorite customers, so I don’t think I’m an unreasonable, demanding customer.
I imagine that Starbucks’ growth in recent years has some bearing on these issues. If they consciously chose to go for growth at the expense of customer service, shame on them. If not, they should have anticipated and dealt with the difficulties of training so many new people.
I wish I had more but these are the ones I have. They carry some interesting stories with them!
Dallas (old blue style): I got on a trip to meet one of my fans. It was the start of my mug journey.
Austin (old blue style): I got this mug the first time I drove down to Austin. It was quite a feat for me! I met up with some friends from the website I broadcast on. I just HAD to stop by at a Starbucks and grab a mug.
Seattle (new style): I bought this mug in the airport, sadly. I took a micro-trip to Seattle (less than 48 hours) for my training conference for the Fiesta Movement and didn’t even have time to stop at Pike Place! Wanted to badly and was disappointed when I couldn’t tell my fellow baristas that I didn’t have time to stop by. Still went to grab one in the airport though!
Houston (old blue style): Got this one when I went on vacation to see my cousin. Took a triangle trip from my city, Fort Worth, to Huntsville, then Houston, over to Austin, down to San Antonio, then back up to Fort Worth. Probably only spent less than 2 hours in Houston itself but I still needed a memorable mug.
Los Angeles (new style): I got this mug when Ford sent me to California for a reunion party over in LA. It was a great trip and I met so many people. I had to buy this mug at the airport as well because, like Seattle, it was a micro-trip.
New York (new style): I have still never been to New York but I got this lovely mug for Christmas last month from my video editor who lives up there. I still plan on visiting there as soon as I can though!
I just remembered seeing a video that mug collectors will find interesting. Dave Snowden is a complexity expert and consultant who lives in Wales. Ulrike Reinhard lives in Germany. Ulrike interviewed Dave via Skype with video about the future of Europe from a developmental standpoint. While the interview is interesting (at least to me), mug collectors will note that there are nearly 40 Starbucks city mugs hanging or on shelves behind Dave.
See it here: http://www.catboant.com/2009/12/31/europe-could-play-a-key-role-on-our-way-to-become-a-global-village/
You just never know where Starbucks mugs will show up!
You have a cute little collection and fun to know the story behind them.
How big are those mugs, Melody? The ones I have are flipping HUGE- I always feel like I’m drinking a jug o’ coffee in the morning.
I have a handful and would like to pick more up, but I’m too OCD to buy mugs that don’t match in style 😉 Though I will be flying up to Seattle for my birthday in April, so I’m sure I’ll end up with non-matching ones anyways, haha.
I have:
London- my first city mug and my absolutely favorite
Houston
Los Angeles
Atlanta
Charlotte
Alaska
Katherine – they are 16oz mugs. If you ask me, that’s sometimes not big enough.
I only have Seattle. I thought about buying the Vancouver, Whistler, and Canada mugs, but I figure I should go there before I buy them. Actually, I guess I have been to Canada…
There’s a city in China (I forget the name of it, but it begins with a D) that has really cool demitasse. A customer brought some back for us a few months back.
Also, the recently re-released the Seattle mug. The new one has the fish jumping and a boat. However, the older one was zoomed in on Mt. Rainier a lot more.
I’ve got just the one a Scotland one which was bought in London! I did think about starting to collect the mugs but they are big so would need a fair amount of space to keep them once you’d collected more than just a few – so I decided to start collecting the Starbucks cards small and easily stored in a couple of folders.
Hey there!
I think I can call myself a passionate collector 😉
Here is my collection so far:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=7129&id=1705230473&l=71cb5282fe
Greetings from Germany to you all!
Sabine
I really like that Ohio mug. ;-D
I should definitely collect the city/state mugs. Especially since I have been to most the places shown. lol
I have a small collection and have actually been thinking about getting rid of it… but when I went through, I thought about the memory or person associated with the mug:
New York City (architechture series) – a friend of mine sent this to me because I did some work on a photograph for her that she wanted to give her mother as a gift.
New Mexico – (same series) – I am from New Mexico and it tickled me completely that it says “Red or Green?” on the mug. I bought this one from eBay
Chicago – (same series) – my husband went on a business trip to somewhere in Wisconsin and drove to a Starbucks in Chicago to pick up a mug for me. I used to live in Chicago and had my very first Starbucks experience there in 1989 right before I moved to Portland, Or.
Phoenix and Las Vegas (same series) – last year we went on holiday to the US and did a road trip from AZ-NV-CA and back. We stayed in Phoenix and we got married in Las Vegas.
Then all the European city mugs: Amsterdam (work at the plant), Cologne (went there most often before I was a partner), Duesseldorf (worked in a store there while I was Coffee Ambassador), Madrid (husband was on a business trip and picked it up for me), Heidelberg (picked this one up after visiting friends near H’berg – store manager was in and did a beautiful coffee tasting for me when I told him I was from the plant), Paris (on holiday with my husband and kids), Prague (on holiday with my husband and visiting the first store 5 days after it’s opening) and Brussels (a gift from the store for participating in the opening events at the first store in the airport).
So, it’s not a huge collection, but there is something connected to each mug and I don’t think I’ll be able to let go of it any time soon!! Funnily enough, I did NOT pick up a mug when I was in Seattle in Nov 2008, which, in hindsight seems really dumb now!!
by the way, Melody, I have an extra Amsterdam mug, and access to getting an Amsterdam mug in the series you have … if you email me your address, I’ll hook you up 😉
I do think having the ‘city’ cups is a good idea…..I have one from Portland, not in the style you show..and have sent various Chicago ones to different people….they have varied slightly thru the yrs but the ones I’ve seen (Chicago) are all the huge ‘architect’ city-scape style. I’ve never seen ones like you show anywhere. I do have quite a few other Sbux mugs so, would not ‘collect’. Actually my favorite Sbux cup (not city, so, off topic) is one from a few yrs ago…in tans, with a little green and has all about coffee written on it. (do not have with me or I would be more specific about what it says)
Melody, I once had a collection of about 50+ city mugs– the old style from the ’90s. But nothing like Sabine. WoW Girl! You got the city mug thing pretty much covered!
One thing I haven’t read anyone write about was the SUPER HUGE city mugs. Best I can remember maybe they were about 18″ tall. I had 3 of these – Atlanta, Chicago and New York. I think at one time they might of been issued 1 per store depending on the city the store was located in.
I finally got tired of dusting them all and sold them on eBay– one of those things I wish I hadn’t sold :-/
I just had one of my friends down here donate her collection of city mugs to me. If it wasn’t for the fact that she wanted me to give them away as contest prizes on my blog, I would’ve loved to have shared them with you. They look great, there’s even some that I want to keep.
Sabine that is a great collection of mugs! Beautiful link! Thanks for posting that. I look at your mug collection and think ‘I had no idea that there are Starbucks in that city’ for some of them!
Thank you, but there are still many mugs missing.
I would be glad having seen all the places I got mugs from. I would really be a world citizen then 😀 (unfortunately I didn’t :(( )
PinkyPie; did I read right? You have an Amsterdam mug from Collectors Series? *greed*
[…] Melody Collecting Starbucks City Mugs! Melody shares her collection of Starbucks mugs from various locations across the country. Just this […]
Cool! Do they make gift cards specific to certain areas too?
Hi Mike! That is a good question and might end up being another blog entry on this site some time.
There have been a number of limited distribution gift cards now and then. For example, the Pike Place Starbucks (1912 Pike Place) has their own card that can only be obtained at that store. One time I did a blog contest and used Pike Place cards as the give away gift cards, just to be unique.
Right now, I hear that Canada has limited gift cards for the Olympics. I’d love to have one.
About a week ago, I met up with a reader of this site who gave me an Australian gift card that he’d been holding on to from a trip!
So there are definitely some gift cards here and there that are only available in one location/geography. When I have the time, it would probably make a great blog post. I’m going to wait and hope to get a Canada olympics gift card before I do such a blog entry.
If they really started coming out with regional gift cards, it would be cool to have a group to trade with from all over the country. Very easy to buy & mail out. I’d love to have an Olympics one too!
There are lots of cards issued – check out:
http://www.buckscards.com or
http://starbucks.ketzra.com/
the second one is more comprehensive – sorry to hikack your mug blog Mel but it’s about collecting Bucks products.
Hi Neil! Fine by me if people want to talk about collectible Starbucks cards, not mugs. It’s an open thread anyways. So you’re not hijacking this thread. I appreciate the conversation!
I saw the link you sent me before as a DM at twitter but I just haven’t had time to respond or put together any kind of blog entry on collecting Starbucks cards.
I am highly amused that El Paso doesn’t have a city mug…it doesn’t even get a “Texas” mug.
However, I can get a New Mexico mug quite easily. Go figure.
I don’t collect the city mugs, but I do love them and the idea. I am especially elated to see that the Boston mug exists. I haven’t seen it in any of my visits to any Starbucks across Massachusetts. I will have to remind myself to pick one up when I get out closer to the big Boston stores. I also love the idea of commemorating trips to other cities and states with these gorgeous mugs. 🙂
we have the kauai mug 🙂 it’s kind of huge.
@JRMY I can certainly drink well over 16oz, but not in these cups! The coffee gets cold too fast 🙁
Maybe it’s the color on the inside of those cups that makes them look smaller than the ones I have.
I loved the older style cups, don’t care for the ones with color inside especially the green , YUCK. Wish they would re-do/re issue or redesign the architecture series. Always wanted the London and NY cups, never bought them when they were available always waiting for another day. . .Never knew there was a Kuai cup, would love a Maui one, fond memories of Starbucks there.
(Reply to Katherine, and others) – Katherine, I agree that the mugs are too large. I think they’re like 18 ounce mugs – A grande coffee with room for cream. Give me a tall stainless steel tumbler and I’m happy. That covers me for most situations.
On the topic of the older series of mugs (Several people have mentioned them in the comments)… I was browsing e-bay one time for collectable mugs and I recall seeing for sale some “Mt. Rainier” mugs (That is in Washington) of a different style. Wasn’t this big new style with the inside coloring.
The funny thing about this “Mt. Rainier” mug on ebay was that “Rainier” was spelled wrong. They were selling for a lot, as I recall. Apparently, Starbucks at one point sold a run of mugs with “Mt. Rainier” spelled as “Ranier”!
It really makes me laugh because Starbucks is notorious (in my mind) for little typos in so many things that they do!
I should have bought one!
Hey Melody, Down at 4th and Seneca we’re selling some special Olympic Merchandise. In addition to the seattle mug we’re selling the Canada, Vancouver, and Whistler mugs. Just thought i’d let you know incase you were looking for some new ones to add to your collection.
Oh my, I’ve seen the older style mugs around here (Philadelphia) but i have so little room that I stick to my white ceramic Starbucks-cup style mug only.
i do love seeing all the mugs, thank you everyone for posting the links, i’ll enjoy the mugs through you all.
It’s kind of my trademark now, all the local baristas love it and comment when i don’t have my personal cup.
Love your collection 🙂 I’d love to start one myself! Personally, I love love love huge mugs…but maybe I’m just weird 😉
I used my girl friends London mug for a magnificent mug of true English tea (talk about a treat!) and the next morning I had my french pressed coffee in it. Absolutely loved the size 🙂
Wow, Sabine, awesome collection!
One mug that is hard to find that I’d like to have is the New York taxicabs.
I also have a small card collection as well, which includes a couple from shareholder’s annual reports sent in the mail. Does anyone know if there were more than three years of “Shareholder Special Edition” cards?
I think regional/city cards are a great idea!
Love the collection… I actually love the size of the mugs.. But, I am really clumsy and I can still get the same amount of coffee in my system as a smaller mug and not worry about spilling it all over myself.
I wish they didn’t switch the city mug line though… I have over half my collection as the old skyline series and now the rest are like this…
If you ever need a Chicago Mug to add to your collection.. I’m sure I can send one your way.
Janel
@Sabine – hope you see this – send me a message and I’ll hook you up with an amsterdam mug. I have two of them!!

Man, this is one popular blog! My prized mug is one my mom got me when she was in China from Hangzhou. And between my roommate and I we have two Hawaiian mugs with different designs.
I collect the tumblers but never thought to cillect the city mugs 🙂 I think I may just start doing that. It would make for a very nice display on an open shelf/bookcase – Lovin the. Starbucks!
When I first became a partner in 1996, I started collecting City Mugs for the various cities I was visiting, starting with my then residence of San Diego.
But a couple of years later, they changed the design, meaning I would have to start over. I just quit and gave away the ones I had collected to my parents.
There was one series a few years ago where you could order some of them online. That caused a lot of controversy from the true collectors who worked hard to get them legitimately in person in each city.
Melody, I should show you pics of all my Disney mugs. LOL
I have no city mugs but have always wanted one. Until Now I have never lived in a city that was large enough to have a featured mug. Finally living in charlotte nc but the skyline is changing so fast the mug isn’t even accurate! But they just redid it in the red and green sim to the ones you have. Before I move I will get one and hopefully start a “small” collection or at least an excuse to spend more $ at sbux!
I don’t know if my local Starbucks still carries the Orange County mug. The mug I did like a lot — and wish they’d bring back — was the blue one from a summer or so again. It looked like a horizontal coil construction, and the glaze was perfect shades of blue with grayish undertones. Although the finish was smooth, it looked a little like a raku glaze. I got two and went looking for more, but alas. They are perfect for hot tea.
I remember once when I went to the Starbucks “Merchandise Outlet” in Ontario, Ca (since closed) there were shelves upon shelves of the original City Mugs, lots of cities, (the ones that were blue) and I remember seeing, literally, about 200 or more of those mugs that referred to the “SSC” w/ a picture of the building on Utah Ave. And back then I didn’t even know what the SSC was… I’m almost sorry now that I didn’t pick up a few of those older city mugs.
this blog post gave me the idea to ask some family who are in Hawaii on vacation to pick me up a mug 🙂
