Let me just say that I never went out of my way to try and collect Starbucks city mugs. It just happened. I have a very small collection of them. Too small to even be called a “collection”. However, I know these mugs are a big deal to many folks and that lots of people collect them. So here is the story of my city mug collection:
**Pike Place Market – I bought this mug at the store at 1912 Pike Place, in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Because I still like the original store, I thought I should have this mug. I have found myself visiting this store increasingly less often because close by is another great Starbucks on the corner of First and Pike Street. (Please note that Pike Place and Pike Street are different streets, running opposite directions). I need to get back to 1912 Pike Place soon. It is still a Starbucks with a La Marzocco espresso machine. Every drink is handcrafted just for you.
**Boston – Last summer, I took a trip to Boston to visit my sister in that area. I figured that since I was in Boston, I might as well buy a mug. I grabbed a city mug.
**Portland – In November last year I drove to Tigard, Oregon to do a store review for this blog. Click here for the store review. I was just outside of the city of Portland, in Tigard, and figured since I had driven that far, I might as well pick up a mug.
**Vancouver – I was at one of my favorite Starbucks at First and Pike Street in downtown Seattle and I saw this mug. I had actually made a trip into the store knowing that it would be a wonderful place to take pictures of sparkly donuts because of its beautiful store design, and the store has really lovely for-here ware. My previous blog episode on the mini sparkle donut is here. This unique store sometimes receives unusual merchandising because it is dubbed the “heritage” store design, and it is still considered one of the Starbucks showcase design stores.
I was at First and Pike, saw the Vancouver mug and thought, ‘where have I seen that bridge before?‘ Then I remembered the Via Ready Brew road trip episode with Brad Nelson walking over a suspension bridge in Vancouver, Canada! I asked a barista about the merchandising and was told their store received a very limited number of exclusive items for Canada because of the Olympics. If you would like to watch Brad Nelson walk over the Capilano suspension bridge in Vancouver, click here. For those readers who do not know, Brad Nelson’s claim to fame is that he is the official voice of the Starbucks twitter profile. Who knows, he may be famous for other things, but that I wouldn’t know! Notice that in the YouTube video, Brad is using a Starbucks Vancouver city mug to drink his Via Ready Brew.
**Seattle – I bought the Seattle mug at the same time as the Vancouver mug. I figured why buy just one mug?
**Ohio, Dallas, Houston – All of these mugs were unexpected wonderful surprise gifts to me. As at times I have given coffee away to people, or connected with other Starbucks enthusiasts through social media, and at times I have been surprised by an unexpected package or gift of a city mug. I’m touched by thoughtfulness of the people around me. You see, this is part of the beauty of Starbucks: It has this odd power to connect people with really big hearts.
For the Ohio mug, I have been told that the boat featured on the mug is this riverboat featured here: http://www.bbriverboats.com/
Anyone else here collecting these mugs, and if so, which is your prize mug?
This is also an open thread. I welcome any Starbucks related conversation in the comments.
Thank you again to Larry of Seattle Custom Framing for his assistance with the photography in this blog entry.

I’m not a huge fan of Starbucks, but I do love the idea of these cups. Although completely different, it reminds me of the state quarters, with each one having pictures of unique locations or events that are special to that area.
I have a London Starbucks card with the Union Jack. It was a present from a customer. I told him I really liked the card he used for tender, and he offered it to me since he could easily get another one “back home.”
🙂
Too bad the current San Fran mug is *tacky* *tacky* but I love my LA mug (with the palm tree).
Love them! If you’d like a London mug, just email me, I’d be totally happy to send one.
Hi! I bought a FLORIDA mug recently and was surprised that they had a state mug as well as city mugs!
Does anyone know if there’s a VIRGINIA mug? Or any northern Virginia cities?
I haven’t been able to find them and a state of Virginia mug would be ideal for my collection!
THANKS!

I would like a London mug!
We would love a Oregon mug. Forgot our heads while on vacay and didn’t buy one while in Oregon!! Also would love an Indiana and/or Indianapolis mug. I heard there is a Sacramento mug. We live about 1 hour from there, so next time we go we’ll stop.
My daughter recently, like you by accident, started collecting the mugs. It started at Pikes Place. Then she started noticing all the Cali stores had the California mugs. We took a trip down to SoCal and saw a Los Angeles mug: bought it. Then in another L.A. store we saw the same shape mug but with the L.A. skyline: bought it. Now she’s collecting both the skyline mugs and the city/state mugs. Total she has: Pikes Place, California, Los Angeles (both, one with skyline), San Francisico (both, one with the skyline), and oddly enough, a Washington D.C. skyline mug we found at a Starbucks in an East Bay store. Since we have at one time visited there, we picked it up.
@Teri – Hi welcome to the blog! The city mugs are pretty fun! Sorry to hear you missed the Oregon one. I have been thinking of doing a second blog post on these city mugs because I have accumulated a few more. I wonder if my readers would be interested in a second post on this topic?
I started collecting these mugs quite by accident! Now I have almost forty of them and some really cool ones!! I have United Arab Emritz, Singapore, Beijing, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, and Moscow just to name a few!! I REALLY want the Houston one as that is my mother’s maiden name. Great blog!!
New cool find on our last trip to SoCal. We walked into a SB near Disneyland and found one of the skyscraper mugs with Orange County on it. Bought it! Then a few days later in a different part of Orange County we found one of the other city mugs with Orange County on it. It was pretty cool, I think my favorite yet. It has a surfer on it, riding the waves.
@puckbunny13 and @teri –
Hi puckbunny13! Welcome to the site! Coincidentally, I have another blog post coming soon which will be another round of city mugs to show off. Mostly they’ve been sent to me as gifts.
Hi Teri! I know exactly which OC mug you mean! It is a fun one. I bought one last month on a trip to OC to go to Disneyland!
Just added a Sacramento mug to the collection. Then realized that I should be buying 2 because I saw different city mugs for sale on-line for up to $30! Doh!

^ I wrote a blog post on Starbucks in Taiwan but it was sloppy, and not well-written and I de-published it. I’ve thought about cleaning it up but never got around to it.
Just thought you’d enjoy the pic!

Any advice?
I love these mugs. I first saw them in an office in the UK positiones along the windowsill, and thought what a great idea. At that point I decided to collect them. The one that I would absolutely love to get is the one from Paris. Anyone who wants a mug from, DC, Maryland or Virginia (any cities in those states) just let me know. I recently moved into a new office with a large window and a ledge. I travel the world for my job so it’s on Starbucks, no more shoes, cloths, or snacks….it’s Starbucks mugs all the way.

I LOVE Starbucks City Mugs. I wasn’t going to collect them either and then one day, I was working for Starbucks, and a customer came in with a present for me from her trip, including the Las Vegas mug. Ever since then I’ve been picking up the mugs as I travel including Vancouver, Whistler, Toronto, New York City and Calgary. Love the colors! Have to find a way to better display the collection however.
I broke my OHIO mug. 🙁 I hope they have more when I get “home”!
