Have you ever wondered where every single Starbucks with a Clover brewer is located? This blog post attempts to answer that question. Once upon a time, Starbucks maintained a web site called www.CloverCrafted.com which listed every Clover Starbucks location. That site has changed into a blog type site, and now no longer has its own list of Clover stores. There is no way to go to the Starbucks store locator and simply say “show me every store in the whole corporation with a Clover.”
Looking for a Clover/ Reserve Coffee store? I’m going to try and blog them all here (as best I can). Keep in mind, part of what is significant about these Clover stores is that any Starbucks with a Clover brewer also receives “Reserve” coffees, and so the partners (Starbucks calls their employees “partners”) and customers have access to a wider variety of whole bean choices than at a typical Starbucks.

Starbucks on Capitol Hill (Washington DC) is in the process of adding a Clover. They have the sign up and the machine there, so I’m sure Clover brew will be available soon
NJ needs/deserves a Clover in at least a couple of locations, selfishly first at my local one in Wall Twp(Sea Girt). I believe volume is sufficient & more importantly, customer base would appreciate it at this location. I’m visiting relatives north of Boston & had my first cup, after listening to my brother in law rave about it for months. Please remember the “true & pure” coffee lovers & share the Clover love a bit more. Fraps & seasonal drinks are nice as the exception, but good coffee should be the rule! Thanks.

There are two Clover machines at the Galter Pavilion Starbucks in Northwestern Hospital (Chicago, IL).
Hi Rik! I found it on the store locator! In the Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
I just realized something. I always assumed when I’d heard that Starbucks has 140 Clovers across the nation and Canada, that that meant 140 different stores, but I realize now that might have been a very bad assumption on my part. First and Pike has two Clovers, and I think one in Chicago does, and now this one in Chicago does too. Actually, I think Olive Way as two Clovers too. It must be a lot less than 140 stores if you count all the stores with two of them.
@Melody – Chicago now has 8 Clover locations, not machines, including Deerfield, a familiar stomping ground for @denise r
@CD – I look at the store locator for Chicago (just now looked at it) and I see six Clover stores listed. ? The problem is the store locator probably. I know there can be a little lag time before it’s updated with the latest Clover info.
I typed in my zip code instead of a Chicago zip code. It must have found more in the suburbs that way (I’m in Western Suburbs and it found the Deerfield store up north).
I just tried the iPad app with GPS and it came up with 8 too. 6 in the city of Chicago, one in Woodfield and one in Deerfield.

Just chatted with SM at my local SB and he says he thinks they would not get a clover because they do not sell enough whole beans nor would the traffic warrant it. I was sort of surprised because besides what he says I think the store would support it. However, the space to put a clover might not allow it. Too bad corporate determines clovers by this formula.
@Purple1 — I think walk-up traffic probably overrides whole bean sales in terms of priority.
In the case of the Northwestern Hospital Starbucks, there is very little whole coffee sold, but there is ALWAYS a line of 5-10 people regardless of the time of day. The sheer sales volume is remarkable.
Based on my observations (can you tell I spent a lot of time there over the past several months), approximately 10% of the patrons bought a Clover beverage.
Rik it certainly would make sense that foot traffic would be a barometer for getting a clover. Certainly, there are times at my local SB when the line is out the door or staying with your drink is totally impossible. I would hope that whole bean sales are not the main reason stores get clovers.
@Melody: the link above in your last post, asking “does this store have a Clover too” took me to the Piper’s Alley store in the city…one of the first two here. (I also heard the were getting a thrid Clover, they do so much business….heard that)
I was also told yesterday that the Deerfield store has had theirs for a couple mnths? roughly.
@CD: agree with you about the western suburbs. We said this before and I feel sure (SURE) it’s true….the Oak Pk store at Harlem &Lake could definately support a Clover. That’d be GREAT for me and you, I think,,, (and even ‘chgobr’, altho he’s kind of m.i.a. right now) …on the 30mile ride home from my mom’s! (I usually run into a kiosk one in North Riversdie mall, for the trip home) But Oak Pk would be great!!! (I miled it out one day, from my folks, for “running” reasons….it’s exactly 5miles up Harlem north of them…and on my way home.
@Denise – I had thought that there was one store that was scheduled to get a Clover in Chicago but did not get it, and I thought that was Piper’s? Anyway, I am still missing a Chicago store on my list.
@Purple1 – Here’s my gut intuition about the selection process for stores that get the Clover – (1) Location – The economics of the area somehow have to support it. I imagine the store has to be in a thriving area, and must be a profitable store. (2) Brewed coffee sales/ Americano sales/ Bold pick sales. If the store is 99% Frappuccino drinkers, the Clover might not do well. (3) Whole bean sales – I do think this plays some small part in which store gets a Clover, though maybe it isn’t a huge part of the selection process. All the stores that have a Clover get a full lineup of Reserve coffee, and I think the stores are expected to be selling coffee by the half-pound too (Reserves come in half pound bags), so I think in some way, they must be looking for stores that have better than average whole bean sales. Back when the Reserve coffee was first launched, I remember hearing that a Reserve Starbucks sold roughly 115 pounds of coffee per week.

Maybe whole bean sales aren’t the biggest consideration, but I think it plays into the mix.
(4) Customer satisfaction – Since having a Clover makes the store a ‘beacon’ store, I would think that Starbucks would want stores that are already doing well in customer service metrics. Though who knows if this really plays into this. (5) Size of store – Some stores are just too small and have no space for the Clover. (6) Weather – I would think there’s a slight inclination to favor markets that have shorter summers and longer winters?
I also wonder if there is some issue about whether the store has a drive-thru? I would think that the Clover would do better in a store with heavy cafe traffic, and I don’t know if any of the current Clovers are drive-thru stores? I sort of hope that they don’t go that route. It’s nice to create some separation of experience between a Clover store and a drive thru store.
We could probably come up with more if we thought about it longer, but those are my guesses at the kinds of things that Starbucks looks at.
Wow Melody thank you for the detailed response re getting a clover. I agree with all the points, however, I am not sure if all of them can apply to my local SB. For sure the space might be an issue in terms of counter availability. I do think that the customer at this SB would embrace the clover and I am not sure if location is an issue, however, saying that the store is in a strip mall, but is near a major hospital and medical offices plus near the court house and other office buildings. I guess there are many reasons why one store gets a clover opposed to another. Too bad there is not a way for a store to test out the clover for a month or so and see how it goes.

@Melody: this is the north suburban store (Deerfield) that you are mssing on your list. It is actually one that WAS supposed to get a Clover (I talked with the r.d.m. just about a mnth before it was ‘supposed’ to happen.) All systems were go and then that store, plus several others, never got one. (until very recently) So, that’s the other one of 2 suburban stores that now have a Clover…or two. (the other being Sreets)
@DeniseR – Okay I got Deerfield listed now! I think I’m missing about 20 Clover stores. Hopefully a few more people will email me with store additions.

I’ve just been to two in NYC. One is at 51st & Broadway. The other at 75th & 1st. The 100% Kona was really rich and rewarding and uncommonly good (old cigarette tag line). I’ve also had the organic Peruvian which had a lot of interesting notes. The only thing I noticed that could make it even better is that there is no crema as you would get in a regular French press. If they could get some crema in there then it may just end up being as perfect of a cup of coffee that is possible.

I have been to Robson II! It is such a fantastic store and all the partners there are super knowledgeable and very high energy. I really love it there. It’s a pretty busy store too and the design of the store is very warm and cozy.
I honestly think one of my old stores deserves to be a Clover store. It is high volume and we sell the most whole bean in the district! If I still worked there, I’d love to do comparisons between Clover brewed coffee and French pressed coffee with my partners.
@Stsai01 – Yeah! I love to hear good things about how the Clover stores are doing. Maybe some day I’ll get there. I would like to review all 150 to 200 Clover stores for the blog … well, maybe someday.

Relaunch of an existing store. It’s a pretty popular location, inside CityPlace (an outdoor mall-type shopping center right next to downtown West Palm Beach, Florida). I knew they renovated the store sometime in the spring/summer, but I had no idea they were putting in a Clover machine.
This is a great blog, BTW – the most comprehensive Starbucks fanblog on the Web, by my reckoning.
Seems weird to me that SB would make such a big deal out of these Clover machines and then not deploy them in any significant quantity. I just searched my zip code (Plano, TX) and got ONE hit in downtown Dallas!
Hi DinahMoeHumm! There is a reason for that! Thanks for dropping by the blog. And you just made me realize that I have forgotten the Dallas Clover from the list! And I’ve even been to that one!
Anyway, the cost of a Clover cup of coffee is significantly more than the normal drip brew. Each cup of coffee is handcrafted for you. The stores that have Clovers have some more limited single origin Starbucks coffees. A cup of rare single origin coffee from the Clover can almost get to the price of small latte. So before Starbucks will put a Clover anywhere that store has to have a proven track record of whole bean and drip coffee sales – A customer base willing to spend premium on black coffee.
The other thing is that Starbucks is trying to limit the number of stores that get these rarer Reserve line of coffees.
Coffee is a food product. It’s hard to source enough of one coffee to send to 16,000 stores. When you travel overseas, you find that international Starbucks sometimes have different coffee offerings! In order to continue sourcing smaller batches of exquisite coffee beans, they’ve got to keep the number of stores that get those Reserve coffees small. It can never be wide-scale,
These stores that get a Clover are privileged. I’ve heard of stores getting a Clover and then Starbucks pulling it from them because they didn’t sell enough.
And lastly, each Clover machine is very expensive.
Hopefully, (fingers crossed) we will never see thousands and thousands and thousands of Clovers. Think of each Clover store as a special step above other Starbucks.

@Dinah – My understanding is that there are about 200 Clovers out there company-wide. On the store locator, you can’t just see one big list. This list is not complete. I’m trying to visit as many Clover stores as possible, (I doubt I will get to all in the US), and then here I can post links to stores I’ve been to, and easily look at least the places I know have a Clover. This list has about 125 stores on it. When I have time, I update it. And if anyone knows that I’ve missed a store, please feel free to use the “contact me” form on this site, and let me know. Thanks!
