Let’s talk about MyStarbucksRewards. It’s the loyalty program that Starbucks first adopted in 2008, and it is still around today. The program has certainly gone through a number of changes since 2008, and as I understand it, is still going through some modifications and changes.
Prerequisites: In order to earn any rewards, there are a few basic prerequisites to the program. It’s pretty simple. You have to have a Starbucks card. This really can be any card that strikes your fancy, whether that’s a city card, the new braille card, the “Twilight” First and Battery Starbucks card, or any other card. Don’t let anyone tell you that you have to use some specific card. You must register the card at http://www.starbucks.com/card, and you must use the card to pay for your purchases.
MyStarbucksRewards is set up with three different levels of benefits. My understanding is that Canada will be getting the same version of rewards as the U.S. program. The three levels of rewards are as follows:
(1) Welcome Level – (One Star) At the “Welcome” level of perks, you can earn a free drink coupon for a birthday beverage. The drink coupon is mailed out a few weeks before your birthday. My understanding is that you have to have an “active” account to get the free drink perk. What I mean by that is that your card has to have been used at least once in the past 12 months.
(2) Green Level – (Five Stars) The Green level includes perks such as no additional charge if you want soy or breve milk in your beverage. Standard syrups are free. You can get ANY free tall beverage with the purchase of one pound of beans. And similarly, you can get any tall beverage when buying one half pound of Starbucks Reserve coffee. At the Green level, a customer can get free “refills” too. A refill price is only available for customers staying in the store. Regardless of original beverage purchased, a customer can get Pike Place Roast (or whatever happens to readily available on the brewers), iced coffee or iced tea as a “refill.”
(3) Gold Level – (Thirty Stars) – At the Gold level of benefits a card holder receives all the perks available under the Welcome and Green levels. The Customer also gets a shiny gold card with his or her name on it. And when at the Gold level, the customer will earn free drink coupons for every 15 stars, and other promotional coupons. The customer must opt into additional postal mailings on his or her profile in order to receive the special extra coupons such as a free Frappuccino, free petite treat, free holiday pastry, and many more.
The above is a really short summary of the card perks. Unfortunately, there are some challenges with the program, and the pitfalls haven’t changed much over the years:
Pitfalls:
(1) Customers are confused about what is a “sauce” and what is a “syrup.” The typical customer knows almost nothing of the business of Starbucks, and has never pumped any sauce or syrup into a cup. He or she might be only vaguely aware that there are some jars, and some pumps, and the barista uses that to put flavor into a cup. So for many customers, they think that “Mocha” should be free under the card rewards. If all the sauces were a free perk the problem would be that nearly every single person would only be buying a ‘latte’ as an espresso beverage, and there would never be a charge for a ‘mocha.’ Starbucks never intended to stop charging for mochas, and it probably is not a good business idea to charge mochas as a latte. Syrups are a little thinner than sauces, and a little cheaper for the business, so it makes sense that they can be offered as a freebie.
(2) Many partners do not realize that a customer can receive ANY tall beverage when buying a pound of beans, and will be free. The register will automatically deduct the tall beverage with the one pound whole bean purchase. (There is the same perk if a customer is purchasing a half pound of the Reserve coffee offerings.) I’ve seen many experienced partners get tripped up about this. It’s a Green level benefit. I’ve watched partners think that you have to be using your gold card to get this perk: That is simply untrue. A customer only has to be at the Green level, and can use any registered card, and can receive this benefit, even if he or she wants a tall mocha Frappuccino with an additional espresso shot, when buying a pound of Pike Place Roast.
(3) The refill policy creates a lot of confusion: Customers erroneously think you can leave the store and still get a refill. Partners often do not realize that a refill for in-store guests can be given regardless of original beverage purchased. Here are some refill guidelines:
i. There is never a “refill” price for drive-thru customers.
ii. Refills are designed to encourage people to linger in the stores on the theory that they will buy additional food or merchandise. There is never a “refill” price for customers who leave the store.
iii. Refills do not have an arbitrary one hour or two hour time limit on them. However, this is an area of ambiguity, but no customer-facing material that I can find describes that you can only stay two hours in the store and still receive “refills.” I recall in 2008, when Howard announced these perks, he clearly said, “Stay as long as you like …” and that is always how I have interpreted this.
iv. Refills do not have to be exactly the same beverage that you started with. If a customer orders a tall mocha, and then walks up to the register and asks for a tall Pike Place Roast in his or her cup, under Starbucks standards, that is a refill.
v. The only beverages which can ever be charged under the “refill” price are Pike Place Roast (or whatever coffee happens to be brewing at the moment), iced coffee, and iced tea. If the customer wants an iced tea lemonade, that is always full price.
(4) The shiny gold card with the customer’s name on it creates confusion. There is NO requirement to actually use this card to get any benefits. This is SUCH a problem that so many people think you must switch cards to get perks! No no no no. Use ANY card registered to your Starbucks.com account which is at the Gold Level, and you will earn all your perks.
(5) Stars are earned per purchase, and do not have any relationship to the dollar amount of the receipt. Most major retailers create reward programs that offer increased perks with increased spending. At Starbucks, if a customer is buying a tall brewed coffee, and then decided to grab a CD at the register with the purchase, that is still “one star” unless the CD is rung up separately. This set up is so very different from what so many retailers do that many customers will feel disappointed, as if there is no reason to ‘add on’ items at the register.
(6) The card rewards are hard to explain in a short soundbite. Overall, this rewards program is a generous program. It is especially rewarding to customers who order espresso drinks with syrups and soy or breve milk. However, again, remember that the typical customer does not know about the business of Starbucks, and is not an expert in these rewards. It is hard to appreciate what you don’t understand: These rewards can ‘feel’ like they’re lacking if the customer never orders refills, milk changes, and syrups in drinks, and doesn’t buy whole bean coffee.
One day recently, I was sitting at Menchies with a friend who asked me, “What benefit is there to having a registered card?” I inquired about what she likes to drink at Starbucks. I didn’t realize that pretty much the only thing she orders is green tea. The one time she was buying a pound of whole bean coffee (as a gift, as it turns out), she said she asked about a free drink and was told that it had to be ‘coffee.’ (This was recently and she’s definitely at the Green level!). She tried to explain to the barista that she only likes iced tea, and says she was told that iced tea is not a free benefit. This story is a good example of the typical problems with the rewards program: Many baristas don’t understand it well, and customers often understand it even less.
***********************************************
Problems with the MyStarbucksRewards website:
I have to be honest that I don’t entirely trust the MyStarbucksRewards website. If you dig for information about the rewards, there is still a section on that website that describes the old (and no longer available) 10% off rewards program. The only thing that is going to do is confuse customers. And the description of the rewards misses some key points, such as a free tall beverage with the purchase of a half pound of Reserve coffee. It’s not a terrible website, but I think it could be a bit more clear and thorough.
***********************************************
Conclusion:
There is a part of me that is exhausted by the rewards. It takes a lot of work to explain them.
Once Starbucks opened up Pandora’s Box of rewards, it became difficult to close it again. Occasionally, I think we were better off before there were any rewards at all. It was a much more simpler time! I sometimes think that Starbucks should wipe out all the rewards. For those who are interested, I’ve heard that Starbucks is doing a test of free additional shots in beverages. However, it appears that the only to receive the perk is to order a “quad” beverage, or at least two more shots than what the drink recipe normally comes with. Please don’t take this as gospel! I’m not totally clear if this is a test, or a permanent change on the way.
It’s probably an expensive program too. For a billion dollar corporation, they are not offering anything that they can’t afford to do, but overall they probably spend millions and millions every year to operate and manage the rewards program.
One other thing is that in any business, it is generally thought that not all customers are the same. The super frequent customers, even if buying a cheaper beverage, will ultimately spend more in one year than the customer who takes 9 months to get to Gold, and come in just for a treat of a Frappuccino. It is kind of the idea that maybe 20% of customers drive 80% of sales: There is an opportunity for partners to use the gold card to create customer loyalty. The barista can learn names, and can immediately recognize that the gold card holder probably is in that more frequent category of super-regular customers. For sake of numbers (and I’m not totally sure how accurate these numbers are!), I have heard that Starbucks has about 60 million customers a week cycling through their doors. In contrast to that, there are probably less than 3 million Gold Card customers. The Gold Card program provides a real opportunity to identify, nurture, and reward the customers who are super-regular and probably spend more in one year than any other group. One lost Gold Card customer over a bad experience probably takes two or three ‘treat seekers’ to make up in sales. From that perspective, suddenly the thought of a free tall Frappuccino with a pound of Pike Place Roast no longer seems so expensive.
Today is the day that Canada gets these rewards, so I felt it was time for a recap. In many ways, I’m disappointed that Starbucks simply relaunched the same program that the United States has rather than improving upon it or fixing the flaws. There are, as I understand it, some international markets that have completely different versions of the MyStarbucksRewards.
I want to make it clear that I appreciate these rewards, yet there are opportunities for improvements, and I’d like to see Starbucks make some minor changes.
Feel free to talk about anything Rewards related! Are you happy with MyStarbucksRewards? If you could change one thing about it, what would it be?

Welcome Canada to the rewards program! Melody, I thank you again for explaining this program and have to say to you that I was one of the first people to push for free refills on iced green tea because that is what I drink and it seemed like it took forever to implement. I have purchased beans and received my free drink of iced green tea. I fear that as new people are hired and also depending on the knowledge of partners in general there will always be issues with explaining the rewards program to customers.
I haven’t seen or heard of any more reward coupons lately. The last one I heard about was the Frappuccino card. I wouldn’t expect them too often, but maybe once a quarter?
I too have not received too many rewards coupons in the email or snail mail format. Thinking about rewards coupons- Perhaps SB should tailor rewards coupons to a person’s purchase history and award them a coupon for something they often buy whether a drink or food? Certainly, that would be a reward and would say to the customer you mean something to us!
I was not aware that i could get ANY drink with the coffee purchase of a pound of coffee. i thought you could only get a free coffee. I did not realize i could get a tall drink with a half pound purchase either. As for the coupons, I have not received one in a long time. in about 6 months. is there a waythey do that? just curious. im talking about the freebies they give out. not the 15 star card.
The rewards work out well for me (always sub soy for milk), but they don’t do much for my husband since he’s a black coffee drinker. If we sit in starbucks for a while, he’ll take advantage of the free refills but even then he usually doesn’t get more than one refill. I’m really enjoying the free iced tea refill after my first beverage. It’s nice to get that to go after I finish my first beverage in store.
@Melody: this is a beautiful “linear” 😉 explanation of MSR! congrats to Canada for finally getting on the MSR map!
@purple1: I think I remember hearing somewhere from Sbux that ONE of the reasons we needed to be using these registered pre-pay cards (or, I should say, pay with, often pre-pay) is so Sbux could gather info and tailor our rewards…. But, while I too very much appreciate any rewards that I do get, I think there are too many inconsistencies, and I know I’ve missed quite a few “special” coupons for I don’t know what reason. Generally, once I knew of this, there was some attempt to send me a couple drink coupons or something. and I know for sure, in some of those cases, it had nothing to do with the USPS losing it….. (I was always told it had not been sent to me, and couldn’t be explained) Anyway, I hope they become a little more ‘accurate’ with MSR, if not consistent.
good topic, as it always is. this one will open the gates I’m guessing…..
I have to ask this: I heard (elsewhere……) that recently there was a free bagel coupon. anyone???? I did not receive. did anyone here?
@Tim – A big word of caution as the “half pound” perk – Take a look at the link I gave – it has to be the half pound bags that are labeled “Reserve” with that branding. I just used the store locator, and I know what state you’re in from Twitter, and much to my surprise, it appears that there is not a single Starbucks selling Reserve coffees in your entire state. You’d probably have to travel a long distance to get a half pound of the “Reserve” coffees:
http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2011/05/15/new-mystarbucksrewards-now-offers-a-free-tall-beverage-with-purchase-of-reserve-coffees/
You’re probably going to be best grabbing your bag of coffee, and ordering a tall beverage, and using your card, and not saying anything at all to the register partner. I hate to say that, but even here in Seattle I’ve seen smart, motivated, friendly great partners who love coffee but it’s just the one thing that Starbucks lacks on: Education about the rewards.
@Denise – Yep, I’ve heard there was a free bagel coupon. I’m a little surprised I didn’t receive it! I thought that I spend enough! Such is life. The random freebie coupons do seem to be about quarterly.
Free bagel coupon??? Not around here or have I seen anyone redeem one. I wish they would be more tailored with rewards coupons Denise as you say SB wanted to do because I think they lost sight of this and miss an opportunity to make more customers loyal to the brand I think. And of late all I get are emails telling me of new discounts on food, drink, etc. but no coupons.
I too find their rewards system difficult to understand and use. Mostly because the barista’s are not all educated on the program as they should be. Note: I am a “Gold Card” holder and have always been. As is my husband. Here are issues I have been facing…
1. Every time I buy a pound of coffee I have to remind them my tall beverage is free. Every time I am told I am wrong. Of course this takes extra time to determine the validity of my claim. They make me feel as if I am the inconvenience where in fact if they were properly trained the issue would not occur and I would not be inconvenienced. I always have to make sure these purchases are made when I am not in a rush to ensure plenty of time for the inevitable confrontation. This issue has occurred to me at all locations I have purchased coffee beans.
2. I was not aware that “Gold Stars” were collected per transaction and not per item. I find this discouraging and a little devious. I could potentially purchase 15 beverages in one transaction and only receive 1 Gold Star seems a bit improper. I feel now I have to take the extra time to have each drink rung up separately to actually receive credit per drink. What an inconvenience.
3. Finally, I personally receive postcards in the mail for special offers from Starbucks when they become available. My husband is also a “Gold” member and but never gets the additional offers like I do in the mail. He only gets the “Free Birthday Drink” and the “Sweet 15” free drink card. Yes, he is signed up to receive additional offers through the mail.
Here is what I like…
1. I enjoy being able to add flavorings and other add-on’s at no additional charge.
2. The App for the iPad is nice to reload balances on kept track of rewards.
Thanks 🙂
I am very excited for the new rewards program!! So stoked!
“Many partners do not realize that a free tall beverage will automatically be deducted from a receipt.” Don’t you mean that the free tall bev is automatically discounted during the transaction after swiping the card? It sounds like you’re trying to say you have to print out a receipt, then enter in some sort of discount code into the POS and the machine will automatically deduct it.
Re: Sauce vs. syrup. This is actually very simple. Anything you see in a regular syrup bottle, these are the tall clear bottles with somewhat translucent fluid in them, are free, regardless if they are sugar free or regular. Mocha, white mocha, chai, pumpkin spice, caramel brulee are all sauces. They are thicker, they come in a special, separate bottle, or they have to be made/poured into a new container. These are NOT free.
Re: Refill policy. I have had customers come into the store at 8AM, then come back after they are off work at 4PM and ask for a refill! I only ever recall one regular customer who understood the refill policy correctly. People would try to get refills for mochas, hot chocolates, frappuccinos, iced tea lemonades. And I have always been told it was a 2 hour time limit, so that is how I have followed it. Stay as long as you like in the store, but the 2 hours starts as soon as you purchase that beverage.
The free tall drink with 1 lb of beans has always been a confusion in every store. I’d just pull out my iPhone and go to the My Starbucks Rewards site and point out the perk should they question me and not give me my free tall drink.
With the rollout of the new rewards program in Canada, I hope that ALL partners everywhere, not just Canada, get trained/re-trained on the benefits of this program! Being knowledgeable helps to create legendary customer service!
Wow, that was a long comment! Sorry! Haha.
I love the long comments – Sophie and Rachel! @SophieT – I actually wrote this entire blog post in about 45 min (or less) late last night. I think I could’ve been more clear about the free tall drink section. I will go back and edit that to make it more clear – thank you for pointing that out. But it will probably be literally 9 hours from now before I have some time to really work on editing this.
It still amazes me that there is this notion that there is a 2 hour limit re getting refills. I have never been denied a refill because of this, but I wonder how this idea continues to be viewed as correct. Perhaps, the SM of each store needs to put up a poster in the staff room to clearly outline the rewards program or periodically review with staff what the rewards a customer can get. It certainly would make life easier on both sides of the counter!
I have had issues in the past too with both the refill policy and the tall beverage with any lb. of coffee. More so with the refill issue though, to the point where I shy away from even getting a refill unless I had initially ordered a coffee.
On the iPhone Starbucks app it does list the green and gold level perks available. It lists the syrups you can get for free. It also explains that the free tall beverage (not just coffee) with the purcahse of a lb. of coffee (it doesn’t say anything about the 1/2 lb Reserves though.) Actually, on the app it says: “not valid with Pour over, Starbucks Reserve, or Clover brewed coffees or Starbucks Reserve whole bean coffees.” but it does say, offer subject to change.
It does also explain the free refills (sort of) it says: “You must use your registed card to purcahse a hot or iced brewed coffee or tea and then present the same card for refills during the same visit”.
Again it says the offer is subject to change. They last updated the app in July, but as you can see there are quite a few discrepancies.
Please excuse any of grammatical mistakes and misspellings!
Thanks for the update. its said that i live in an area where i can’t get the half pound reserves. I don’t buy em much, but I still don’t know why i don’t get any special offer cards anymore. haven’t had any since january.
Rewards are certainly being rolled out internationally. South Korea over the Summer. Chine next I believe? We get Green level rewards just for registering a Card in The UK and Ireland, but we don’t collect Stars. We are scheduled to move to this system in the New Year (if what I’ve read on Twitter is true!).
@PatrickM – I have a quick minute over lunch. Are all the international markets moving towards this, or is that the plan?? I really don’t know. I thought that China already had a really unique Starbucks rewards program where they earned a free drink (tall?) after 10 purchases, and I thought that in the UK version of the program, there were no stars but you could get an add shot. I can easily say that I’m not well informed on the international variations – I don’t know much of anything about those international programs! It’s hard enough for me to get down pat by heart the U.S. version. 😉
@Sophie and Hayley – If I could just make one change to the rewards, I would probably wipe out the free refill perk entirely. Get rid of it. It’s too hard to explain. It creates enormous confusion on both sides of the table. There are ambiguities. I think that the free refill idea was adopted, and part of the orig 2008 version of the rewards, long before the stores had free wifi, and it’s one area of the perks that has never changed. They wanted to give people a reason to linger in the stores! Well, now with free wifi, I think there is a reason for people to linger!
1) I called customer service today and was told, re: the bagel coupon: yes, there would be no reason I would not ‘qualify’ for one BUT, she says I wasn’t sent one, they’re being done ‘totally RANDOM’ (nothng to do with nothing) and there’s nothing she can do except pass on this info, for me. Especially, she said, since she can see this has been an ongoing “issue” for me: no petite, coupon etc.
I say: “random” re: rewards doesn’t cut it. Base it on SOMETHING! and yes, these coupons have been going thru my regular Sbux……just not from me!
2)re: the refill policy. Yrs and yrs ago and actually, always, if I’ve been sitting in a Sbux and drinking a cup of coffee, I was always given a refill at no cost. THAT was simple, and makes sense, to me. The policy now, to get a “reFILL” of a drink that you never had in the first place that day (ie: you buy a frapp and then you get the “free coffee…or whatever….REfill) to me, it’s not a refill if you never had it in the 1st place. It’s just a free cup of coffee. Why don’t they just say that: come in, pay with your reg. card, and if you buy any drink at all, we’ll give up a cup of coffee. ??? probably because it MAKES NO SENSE.
and me: very frustrated with the randomness of the rewards. be ‘random’ this way a little more often, please.
About time Starbucks bring the rewards program to our neighbors up north! They have asked Canadian to patronize their business with no rewards long enough and I am glad Starbucks has finally come to their senses.
I’m so glad you posted this! A little trick I use… Whenever I have multiple purchases to make, I actually ask the cashier to ring them all up separately. If there’s a long line behind me I don’t worry about it, but it really doesn’t take that much more time to ring items up separately, then you get multiple stars. I personally think they should revise the rewards based on dollar amount or amount of items. Would make more sense.
Thanks for the info! 🙂
Kristin
Re the bagel coupon. My husband gets a bagel from SB every day so you would think with that info on the SB computers, we should get the coupon. Should be interesting to see. Re the refill policy- I would actually hate to see it go. I think it is a nice gesture and worth keeping. Certainly, when you are in a restaurant having a meal you more times than not get a free refill of coffee or tea.
@purple1: according to what I was told by MSR, having any breakfast item (or not) has nothing to do with it. So, I hope this comes thru for you but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
I have a (non)-vegggie egg and cheese breakfast sandwich there about every other day…makes no difference. “random”. 🙁
Melody – thanks for the great explanation. I’m curious – which card do YOU use for your rewards?
I still use my old solid black Starbucks Rewards card – because I can’t bear to part with it. About once a month, some barista or another will ask me “don’t you have a gold one yet?” I tell them “Starbucks sent me this one for free. I’m not giving it up.”
Also, I was told more than once that it is “store policy” not to ring up items separately to give customers more stars in any transaction. Partners will be fired if they are found ringing up drinks, pastry and merchandise separately for any customer in order to give that customer more stars. Have you heard anything about this? Or was it just an enthusiastic district manager?
Thanks again for the rundown on the rewards – too bad my favorite drinks (salted caramel hot chocolate and raspberry passion tea lemonade) rarely qualify for any freebies!
Re: Birthday Card drink coupon
US site: Bring your birthday postcard to any store on the actual birth date. The birthday postcard will be your mailbox about 3-7 days before your birthday.
Canadian site: Your birthday postcard will be sent to the address affiliated with your account during the month before your birthday and will expire approximately seven (7) days after the date that you have indicated is your birthday.
This sounds a bit different. The US one arrives just before your birthday, whereas the Canadian one expires just after your birthday. I hope they’ve gotten better mailing these out, as last year I’m pretty sure I got my card more than a week after my birthday.
@SbuxDrama – That somewhat drives me crazy to hear that it is against policy to ring up purchases separately. I’ve never heard any partner in Seattle say anything like that to me, or to anyone standing in line. It takes longer to try and explain a policy than to just do it.
As to what card I use: I retired my black card. I used it to the point where it was starting to crack a little. I had a Pike Place special store card that I was using and wore that one completely out too – That one began to peel at the edges. Right now I am using a Seattle City Card. I like the design on it, and it’s pretty, and unique, and I feel totally happy using it. There’s nothing about the gold card that makes me want to use it. It’s shiny, gold, and has my name on it, but if you go to the same stores over and over again, partners will get to know your name.
@Jo – That is really interesting. Somehow I was thinking that the birthday free drink coupon had about a one week expiration on it – I was thinking our program had what you described as the Canada version. I really didn’t think you had to use the birthday free drink actually ON your birthday. ???? I guess I don’t know the answer there.
I have a question about refills. I’ve heard mention here a few times about a ‘refill price’. Is your refill a cheaper price than the original? That is not something that’s done in Canada (at least not where I live). If a customer sits in and has a coffee or brewed tea they can have a coffee refill. This rings in at the same price as the original tea/coffee and then is deducted with the card. Recently I even received specific direction that if someone orders a latte, sits in and then orders a coffee that it does not count as a refill. I guess there are still some differences between US and Canada.
Also – someone mentioned that all syrups are free. I believe the Cinnamon Dolce syrup is an exception to that rule?
We spent a lot of time talking about MSR today…some of our very regular customers don’t even have registered cards! But…their drinks didn’t necessarily qualify them for perks under our old system, at least now they have the promise of a free drink every 15 purchases when they get to Gold. (we have quite a few that will be Gold within the week) They sounded interested when we talked about it today, so we’ll see what happens!
Re: the birthday postcard – I had a customer today tell me that his postcard had expired before he even received it. I told him to bring it in and I’d give him his free drink anyway. It’s not his fault that the mail service is so slow! I would hope that everyone else is doing the same thing! It’s not much of a reward if you can’t use it.
Michelle – Oh my gosh! You bring up great questions, such ambiguitues. As to the refill, the refill price is either 50 cents or 55 cents but ends up being free with the registered card at green level (with money on the card.) I did a previous very long blog post just on the refills, and one partner weighed in that if you go to the Beverage Resource Manual on page 18, that is where it says it is a refill, regardless of the original drink purchased. I’ve never actually looked through the BRM.
I know this sounds weird, but I think the Cinnamon Dulce is in a class by itself – even here it rings up differently than other syrups. To me, that just seems confusing.
I would wipe out free refills entirely if I could. They don’t seem worth the headache, and most of the business is to go business anyways.
Hope you get your regulars signed up! Even if you don’t take advantage of many of the perks, it’s worth it to start earning some free drink coupons.
Thanks for the clarification on the very messy, syrupy disaster that is Starbucks rewards. When I was at Starbucks this morning, the big signs were up with the gold star Starbucks cards depicted on them giving the impression that one must register online for a NEW special card in order to gain special rewards. The messaging and communication upon launching the Starbucks rewards was not particularly clear. However, as I do use lactose free milk and soy milk, I will continue to appreciate the benefits 🙂
RE: Cinnamon Dolce syrup.
From https://www.starbucks.ca/card/rewards
Complimentary syrup choices include Caramel (regular or sugar-free), Cinnamon Dolce (regular or sugar-free), Classic, Hazelnut (regular or sugar-free), Raspberry, Peppermint, Toffee Nut and Vanilla (regular or sugar-free). Syrups are subject to availability and exclude all seasonal or promotional beverages and syrups. Complementary milk choices include: Soy, Nonfat, 2% (our standard), Whole, Cream (breve, half-and-half) and Lactose-free. Offer subject to change.
I have always classed Cinnamon Dolce syrup with all the other regular syrups. Why is there a reason for it to be special? Because a cinnamon dolce latte gets whipped cream and cinnamon dolce powder? I think that is nonsense.
Re: ringing up items separately.
I would not mind doing this for a customer as long as the amount of items does not exceed 7 or something. I have had people come in and ask for 50 Starbucks cards to be loaded though. That would kind of irk me to do 50 card loads seperately. I completely understand that they want more stars, so I totally support having the system so you earn stars by the price total. The customer should always come first, but ringing up loads of transactions separately can really add up the time the partner is on till and therefore unable to step away to do cleaning/stocking or cash control tasks, especially if they’re the keyholder on duty.
@SophieTsai – I’ve never supported earning stars for buying gift cards. It appears to me to be more of a transfer of money rather than a real purchase, so doesn’t seem like it should earn stars. And I’m not even sure if does or not. If I am buying gift cards to give away for this blog, I’ll do incremental groups separately – So if I need four $5 cards, that’s one transaction, and then say I need three $10 cards that is separate.
I was talking at length with a favorite SM today about CDL. She made the comment that it was more expensive than any other syrup, and had its own CDL Latte button, meaning the syrup doesn’t come off? I walked away thinking that a CDL is unique because it gets whipcream and that powder on it. It’s a great syrup flavor!
I have seen people ask for things to be rung up separately, and I have done that now and then (I forget to ask a solid 40% of the time because I’m too busy talking about other things!), but I’ve never really see it be for more than like 3 things, at most.
You’ve explained it beautifully, Melody. It seems simple enough to me. I REALLY wish they would bring some sort of rewards program to Japan. We have Starbucks Cards but all you can do is charge money onto it and that’s it. So everyone just pays cash or by credit card and the Starbucks Cards are more for presents.
@Purple1 – If the refill policy doesn’t need to go, it needs to be simplified greatly? Maybe just have it for people using for-here ware?
To anyone – I found this infographic in my twitter stream which I thought was interesting. One lost gold card holder probably does take six people to make up for them:

One thing those cards do too, I would assume it gives Starbucks a way to collect some demographic data, and purchasing data, though not really sure.
I know for a fact that you do not have to use your birthday drink post card on your actual birth date because I think I used it on another date last year. Besides if you happen to be out of town on your birth date it would be pretty impossible to use it on your birth date. As to how long it’s good for I forget since my birthday was 11 months ago but my current birthday is next month on Guy Fox day so when I get my post card I’ll check and let you know.
I’ve been a rewards member since they debuted the program, and my usual drink is either a misto or an iced coffee with a little soymilk, so I most appreciate the free soymilk benefit. I’ve also gotten a free tall coffee when I’ve bought Via.
A few bulleted(ish thoughts)
– You are right, I do not feel that the rewards program is properly explained to partners. Most of what I know of it I figured out myself/from Melody.
– The easiest way to tell a sauce from a syrup is the shape of the bottle – the sauces come in that fat square one (same as the frappuccino syrup base – the syrups are the tall round bottles. I think someone might have already said something like this.
– I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it is to explain to people that the Starbucks card has to have money on it for the reward to work. My record is 15 minutes. .
– The coupons (birthday and Sweet 15) have expiration dates, but generally speaking, those fall under “Just Say Yes.” In my store, we usually process them without question.
I still believe the free refill policy should stay even if you do not use an in house mug. As I said, I feel it is a nice reward. Re the birthday coupon- mine came late this year but as people already know from a previous comment from me there seems no point to having this as a reward if no one acknowledges your birthday at the counter! Reward coupons and rewards should make you feel special and appreciated by SB. I just often don’t see that from the partners.
A question somewhat related I think- I assume when you register your card the info is on the computer right. The other day I left my gold card home and I once remembered a long time ago someone left their card home and they gave their phone number to a partner and she was able to get her gold card info. The other day when I asked if I could do that, they said that was not possible. Does anyone know if this is correct info?
re: CDolce syrup. this is my classic, every-day, winter drink and this syrup has never been included in the rewards for me. I am told, “it’s part of the “drink” so….not dedcuted. ???? to me, of course it’s “part of the drink’ but if I had the same thing w/out the cd syrup, wouldn’t it just be a latte??? so, I always thought that was crazy.
as for ringing up items separately, according to Corp Sbux when I called and emailed them, it is NOT a “store policy”……it IS the way the MSR was set up. (a *star* per transaction) One partner hasseled me ONCE about ringing TWO items individually, on a slow mid-morn. with NOT one person in line behind me, or even near me. He actually refused, said it was “a courtesy”. Of course, as I said, I contacted eveyone and was sent some compensation for his lack of “courtesy”. Following a plan that Sbux sets up is NOT a courtesy. My TIPS that I leave are a courtesy.
and now, I have to go back up and re-read what was written about the CD syrup. I did read that it IS too be included as a rewarded syrup, right? need to print this up.
sorry the rant. I’m sure there’ll be more.
oh! as for the “refull” policy, as I said before, I have always gotten a coffee refill all thru they yrs when I had a coffee in store…just as almost any cafe would do. So, maybe to simplify it, and still keep it in line with most eateries/places of drink…they should just actually use it as a real refill policy: refill only coffee (and teas??? not sure about the tea since I assume that means another tea bag?)….they’re really not losing much on a coffee refill. That would be very simple and civil.
Denise I agree that the courtesy should be re refills to continue with them. Re refills for tea- They make some cold teas ahead of time so with regard to that it is quite easy to do a refill. Re the separate transaction issue. I used to ask for the partner to do separate transactions, but I got too many times such looks that I gave up on asking for it. Not worth the aggravation.
@purple1: I agree that the transaction request can feel sometimes “intimidating” due to a particular partner. But that’s wrong. It’s your reward program. I would say (I think I have said): ‘you can take this up with corp Sbux if you want…this is the way they set it up.’ Do I believe it was set up this way to kind of (like the old failed ‘bold on demand’..or brew..whatever it was) keep the *stars* down? yes. I do. Make it as difficult as possible and customers will finally give up, one way or other.
re: the cd syrup. I just talked to an experienced partner. (the sm was off today) He told me yes, he believes the cd syrup IS included in the rewards and then went on to explain it’s all in the register, the POS system. Apparently there are some “short-cut” keys, two are cdolce and cdolce sugar free. When rung with that button, the syrup does NOT come off. (as it is supposed to). He said it needs to be rung as a latte add cd syrup, and then it will come off. ???? makes sense…..not the short-cut button part, but the other way. This has been my daily winter drink for a couple yrs, definitely since the rewards. I have never gotten any thing off on it. Maybe things are about to change;)
@purple – re the phone number question.
Unfortunately, no. There isn’t a way to look it up. It seems silly, doesn’t it?
Just thought I’d let you know how the Reward work in the UK. It’s pretty simple and all done automagically by the POS system. Also of note, if buying VIA or Coffee for home use and buying two tall drinks the system automatically discounts the more expensive drink, rather than the cheaper one. Unusual for the UK!
On the topic of refills, in the UK only the Filter Coffee is marketed as “refillable”, there is no necessity to use a SBUX Card to get your refill, its not put through the till either. 9 times out of ten I get a new cup too, so not truly a refill!
Does anyone know if a UK starbucks card will get rewards in the US stores?

Hmm. I didn’t you can get such rewards with Starbucks. But then again, I don’t drink that much Starbucks as it’s pretty expensive though I really, really love coffee. I might try this sometime and I hope Starbucks here have rewards and promos too. Thanks!
I’ve always gotten iced tea lemonade refills for free with the rewards card.
What if I only order Grande drinks? How will I know when I’ll get that free tall drink after 15? Or can the credit be applied to a partial Grande? Or will those free drinks just accumulate and I’ll just redeem 5 Talls in a row one day? I didn’t see a note in my receipt telling me how I’m doing in terms of Stars etc. And what if I have two registered card under my 1 account? Are the Stars a combination of expenditures between my two registered green cards? I’m not sure if you answered this one, but my last question is, do I get a Star if I just purchase for example a muffin and no drink?
Thanks!
Audrey
@Audrey – if you are referring to the US/Canada program, the coupon is for a ‘free drink’ — any size, any kind. There is an expiry date, but the coupon is *usually* good for a few weeks after being received (though it depends on how quickly it gets to you through the mail).
You can check how many stars you have by signing into your account on the starbucks.com site (there is a sign-in link at the top of the page). The main page tells you “Gold Level Stars Required to Reach/Maintain Gold Status”, “Stars Until Next Free Drink” (if you are already at Gold Status), “Months Until Birthday”.
If both cards are registered to the same account, they can both earn stars for you. If you log into your account and the ‘My Cards’ link on the left, you can also transfer funds between your registered cards or set up an ‘auto-reload’ of your card when it drops below a certain balance.
Any purchase at a qualifying store should earn you a star, but only one star per transaction no matter how many items or how much you are spending.
@Brian – I was wondering about rewards when visiting other countries, too. According to the US site: “Starbucks Cards can also be used interchangeably at most stores in Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.” However I couldn’t find anything on rewards, though I’d hazard to guess that only the North American Starbucks Rewards members can get rewards/stars in North America (it sounds like Canadians & Americans can get rewards/stars in each other’s countries) and likewise in all other participating countries (only people registered to whatever country can get that country’s benefits).
I suppose if you were going to be in the US for a long enough time to make it worthwhile, you could just buy a card there and register it to an American address. If you’d be buying more than 5 drinks (the point at which you hit ‘Green Level’ and get free syrups, etc), it could be worth it. But you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the long term benefits (receiving a Gold Card, free drink coupons) unless you were in the country for an extended stay and would be around to receive mail at the address you registered with.
