Happy New Year to all my readers! Have you made any resolutions for 2012? Don’t forget that you can bring in your tumbler (meaning the limited promo tumbler) for free coffee refills during the month of January. The previous article about that promotion is here.
I decided to start the new year with a blank slate: a totally open thread. Feel free to share your resolutions for the year, or what you want to see at Starbucks this upcoming year, or anything Starbucks-related. The funny thing about having a blog like this is that it is a bit like have a restaurant: I have to always have an enticing menu of food or else people will quickly lose interest. The novelty effect wears off fast. As I look back at 2011, there were a number of store review articles, history lessons, and leadership stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. For me, a number of the high-notes for 2011 were as follows:
- The future of Starbucks has great promise – I was on cloud 9 watching the new logo be unveiled and listening to Starbucks leadership talk about the future of Starbucks. (This blog post includes audio of Mr. Howard Schultz, CEO). (January 2011)
- Starbucks store review – Austin, Texas – In February this year, I took a trip to Texas, and this Starbucks store in Austin, Texas stood out as one of my very favorite segments of the trip. (February 2011)
- Joe Magazine (1999) – I particularly love glancing back to the Starbucks of the 1990s, and seeing the history lessons for this big company. Joe Magazine was a creation of Starbucks and sold in-stores everywhere in 1999. The magazine tanked. (March 2011)
- Howard Schultz answers customer questions – This is a short audio segment with Howard Schultz answering a few random customer questions. The actual event that this is audio comes from was held on April 21, 2011, and was part of the Onward book tour. I didn’t get it up on the blog until May 2011, but it’s still a gem. The Onward book tour created a large number of events with opportunities for customers to directly throw questions at Howard Schultz. I only wish that I could have personally been at any one of the events. I do have a friend in Chicago that got her Onward book signed at one! (May 2011)
- The Clover Starbucks in Park Ridge (Chicago area) – This was another highlight for my year. I took a trip to Chicago over Memorial Day, and saw a few Clover stores there. I have so few blog posts about stores outside of the West Coast, and this trip was a delight, as I met up with two very nice friends, and met some great partners there too. Actually, every store that I visited on this Chicago trip was a lot of fun, so it was difficult to pick this blog post over any of the other Chicago-area store reviews. (June 2011)
- The Pink Lime Frozt (a Starbucks test beverage) – I took a trip to Northern California, and had the chance to try a test beverage called the Pink Lime Frozt. It was a lot of fun to get to try this unique Frappuccino-like drink, but I doubt this will ever make the menu! (July 2011)
- The butter coffee tasting: Starbucks Anniversary Blend – The Olive Way Starbucks (in Seattle’s Capital Hill neighborhood) hosts regular coffee events. I highly suggest you visit if you can. This was a world-class coffee tasting experience as we tried butter in our coffee! It’s a must-read! The partner who guided our coffee tasting is the world-famous “Mikey,” also known as “Mr. Opportunity” because his face can be seen on a Starbucks employment window cling on the windows of Starbucks stores all across North America. (September 2011)
But I want to know what YOU want to see on this site. What do you like and what do you not like? And how often do you want to see new articles? Knowing all these things will help me formulate blog content for 2012. This blog is going on three-years old. (I started in early September 2009, so I guess about 2 and half years, but it feels like MUCH longer! It feels like I’ve been at this for years.) I am still amazed that I haven’t run out of Starbucks stories!
Despite what it might look like, this is still a relatively small Starbucks blog. As far as I can tell, nothing has ever gone “viral” from this site. Actually, that might be a totally fun thing to have happen in 2012, but I’m not going to hold my breath. I really appreciate everyone who comes back over and over again to join in the comments, and “like” the blog posts and is a part of this community.
I really do want to know all your Starbucks-thoughts. If you have ideas on what I should cover, do tell. And as I said, this is an open thread. I want to entice everyone to come give feedback on what you liked in the past (or did not like): Every comment left below will be eligible for a $75 grand prize Starbucks card. (Maximum two entries per person.) All comments must be posted before 8:00 p.m. (PST) January 2, 2012. I’ll throw all the names into a hat, and pull one out as a winner. Actually, I’m going to entice my friend “LatteRose” to pull the name out of the hat, so she is not eligible to participate. (Sorry Rose!) Be sure to use a valid email address when leaving a comment so that I can easily email you and let you know if you’ve won. Winners must have an address in either the United States or Canada. As always, comments may not descend into personal attacks, or any rude and harassing comments. No spam. The $75 Starbucks card has already been purchased and is just waiting for a winner! (See attached image).
Thank you again for a great 2011! I hope 2012 is even better!
~Melody

Re the tumblers, I just picked up a couple of the tumblers at a local hospital Starbucks store. They had several still there (and I talked a customer into getting one).
As for your Chicago visit, that was a personal favorite of mine. Because of that visit, I found my new house and began an incredible new journey so THANK YOU!
I personally like the store visits and historical posts. I’d like to see those continue.
And dont forget YOU made The New York Times in 2011!!!!
Happy New Year!
The SBUX highlights of my year include:
Finding out that the store closest to me started doing pour-overs after 7PM
Discovering the Clover store in Highland Park, IL that will make any bean in the store in their Clover
Going to the 2nd LEED store in IL (in Niles, IL) on opening day and sitting in a chair made of recycled bottle caps.
@CD – LOL – Yes, the blog had a tiny link in a NY Times book review opinion type section. Very difficult to find that link, but it was my Onward book review that got linked to. But that was a very very exciting moment for me! Despite that, my page rank fell this year. Yet visitors are WAY up over 2010. A little over 220,000 absolute unique visitors visited this blog in 2011 – Yet by estimate, I’m like the 3rd or 4th largest unofficial Starbucks blog. There is no rhyme or reason to blogging my friend! LOL I just know that the food has to be good for the restaurant to stay open.
@NeilHarris – I am sooo hoping to get back to the Chicago area in 2012, but I really don’t know! Thanks for stopping by. Someday I hope to visit your Highland Park store!
Happy New Years!! I’m just glad to know there are other people out there as passionate as Starbucks as I am! I love the posts that bring some of the Starbucks experience closer to me that I don’t get to have, such as being close to the SSC, the tastings, and especially the test market products!
I still haven’t fully decided on a resolution yet for the new year. Luckily, I still have quite a few hours to decide. Good luck to everyone in the new year. Warm coffee cheers!
Happy new year! Just tried the new cake pop and it is DIVINE. Also excited to try the chicken sausage wrap with fire roasted vegetables. We are changing how we brew, so this year will see some change(4 coffees offered in the morning, decaf in air pots). I hope to see some exciting food changes to entice customers to stay for lunch or a evening snack – this is the third place and I want to offer great food to pair with great coffee.
you should definitely try to get to that tasting up at olive we were talking about the other day 🙂
i think my 2012 will be full of stuff at the olive way store, a lot of experimenting with my keurig, and some down time at the lqa store. and who knows what else in between. one of these days i need to try to check out the gear store in the ssc, and i need to drag j out more to get him more coffee flavour experiences as well.
i’ve been very tempted to get that new card. i love the colours!
Melody and your loyal followers, my best wishes for a prosperous and happy new year.
I gave my promo tumbler a trial run today, wanted to be sure it worked 😉 . Well it holds coffee. Tomorrow I’ll try the “free” function 😉 .
I’ll throw my comments here Melody in hopes that I can enter your gift card drawing but my main purpose is to wish you and the plethora of your followers a very happy and prosperous new year. Somewhere I read this blog is 3 years old. One thing I really enjoy about your blog, besides everything else, is your articles, and pictures, of the various Starbucks stores. You are just an incredible person Melody and I hope you keep your blog going. All the best to you in the new year Melody! I still do not know how to put in those cutesy smily faces or else I would have put a few in.
Looking forward to seeing how Starbucks helps the world out with new ways to use my Kerrigan machine and their fine coffees. Would love to see what the new holidays bring in merchandise
I just wanted to say HAPPY 3 YEARS and going STRONG! 🙂 I have enjoyed both your posts and your guest blogger posts as they’re fun and in most cases educational. I especially love it when it’s about Starbucks around the world. I’d have to say that to date one of my favorite posts is about JOE Magazine. I’m still lamenting a bit about it not taking off 🙂 I’m most thankful about the blog posts of explaining tastings/cuppings. As much as I have always loved the coffee I didn’t know much about it outside of “Yes I’d like another cup” LOL. There is definitely a lot of change and new avenues that Starbucks is moving forward with (they always seem to be branching out) so I don’t feel that you will be at a loss for content. I have faith 😉 Melody you have a very fantastic New Year and I look forward to more posts and more tweets and “likes” on your FB page!
I enjoy reading your entire blog. While I may just be a “lurker”, I do read it regularly. I don’t always comment because I’m usually reading it on my phone, and it’s difficult to leave a comment on it. I think my favorite posts are the ones where you review a “coming soon” product and give us a sneak peek at it. Keep up the great blog! It is very entertaining! 🙂
@Diele – I am looking forward to another food option. It doesn’t seem like there hasn’t been much change in eons. A chicken-sausage wrap sounds good. I’d heard that was coming, but I haven’t tried it yet.
I am very curious to see how customers react to blonde roasts. Perhaps we will target an untapped market or please our customers who drink Pike Place Roast as there is no milder alternative. Personally I do not see me forgoing my bold tendencies any time soon. Nothing like a fresh cup of our Caffe Verona with milk chocolate grahams or a warmed chocolate chunk cookie.
Do you know how many stores have Clovers? I know you have mentioned a number before. I hope Arizona gets one soon(might have since I last checked).
I wish every one a very very happy new year! and hope everyone sticks to there resolution for at least 1 week, although i know i portly won’t 🙂
*Probably
I’m not making a new year’s resolunions then I won’t have to break them. I didn’t break any of mine last year either. Gads I’m good!
Melody, I thoroughly enjoy the blog … looking forward to what you share in the new year.
Also for 2012 … I hope to see a tasting event somewhere in our area. They’re touted in Howard’s books, but I’ve yet to hear of one happening locally! (The price I get for being so far from the SSC, perhaps.)
first, of course: Happy New Year to everyone!
secondly: @CD: I always meant to tell you I’m glad you found your new home out nw here….. I think it’s a nice area, esp. out where you are! It was ironic that you found it from that evening at our Deer Pk meet!
@Melody: look at what a little community you’ve brought together! that’s huge!!!! I think our trip to Streets was right up there for me…overall….not to ignore my regular 2470 in Mt Prospect where (I thought) they treated you like a queen… fun.
@eric: if you can get in touch with your dm, you can request a tasting and even a ‘cupping’ and there’s a pretty good chance they’ll accomodate. has worked for me anyway…
I really have much more to say but needed to leave the house about 30min ago! more sooner….
Happy New Year, Melody!
I’m not eligible but couldn’t help but comment when I saw the new year Starbucks card! How awesome is that? I love that is shows that 2012 is the year of the dragon!
Last year was pretty exciting for us in Japan, it was the 15th anniversary for Starbucks Japan and we saw new concept stores and got a couple Clover stores as well! Hoping to get to one as often as I can this year.
Wishing you, your blog, and everyone who visits a year filled with joy and much coffee in 2012!
Happy happy new year to you Melody and to everyone on this blog. This is one of the best blogs around and Melody you continue to open up discussions where I would not consider an opening. What I enjoy most about the blog- two things- getting to know the people on this blog and Melody learning about starbucks in a way I could not learn from going to the store. Thank you. What I would like to see in 2012- first probably would be better customer service and better interaction with the partners. Better training of partners. I also would like to see more healthy food choices. BTW this morning we brought our free promo tumbler into the store and the partner was not totally aware until the SM told her that the coffee was free in January. I showed her the code to use at the bottom of the tumbler. In this last year at my local SB we have gotten to meet such wonderful customers and some of them have become friends but whenever we walk in there we are sure to find someone we know. That is so nice.
Melody it would be nice to hear from you what you feel the direction of SB should be in this coming year.
Good Morning Purple1! I just woke up up! Sometimes I feel like I am way behind my readers with the time difference. I still want to see more focus on coffee at Starbucks. The 8 weeks of bold coffee promo was about March of 2010,, and was near genius. It’s weird how that feels like it was a lot longer than that. In my area, I would say that the customer service is superb. I don’t really have complaints. However, I think that there are problem spots in the country where customer service needs to come up to the Seattle standards – I do NOT want to say that there aren’t great Starbucks everywhere, just that there is a little more inconsistency when you leave Seattle, and that should be addressed.
I REALLY want to see Starbucks make knowledge of the card rewards a priority for partners. I was at a local Starbucks during bogo and bought 2 pounds of Christmas Blend. I was on my way into work, and in a hurry. I wasn’t even planning on buying CB because I was in a hurry. I had gone up to the register and ordered a tall caramel brulee latte, and that was it. The partner at the register (Ryan at 7th and Pike) had reminded me it was CB bogo day. I hadn’t even thought about it and I was in ‘must get to work’ mode. She asked me if I wanted to buy some CB. Our transaction was done already. I couldn’t say ‘no’ – I really like Ryan, and I will eventually use the coffee. So I said yes. Ryan rang me up and said, ‘oh wait, let me void that previous CB drink, and then add it here so you will get it for free…’ Now that is really amazing customer service! It should be like that everywhere. By the way, I didn’t even suggest she do that. My brain wasn’t fully awake yet at that early hour.
@Kaori – Happy New Year!!!!! Hey, are you ever going to write a guest blog post for me? We had talked about that at one point. You are still welcome to do that. Or just send me photos and I’ll put them together as a blog post.
@Eric – Happy New Year!
@Denise – Come to think of it, that Starbucks where we met up with CD and his son was sooo much fun. You are right that 2470 was amazing too. It was impossible to pick. I love showing off Clover stores, and thought the atm was a kick at Park Ridge. But now that I think about it, I should have picked Deer Park.
Happy New Years to Mel and everyone else:)
My favorite thing about your blog is how you travel to different Starbucks and take pictures. Its great to look at how different and unique each Starbucks store is. Something that I think is important. That combined with your great tastings give me ideas of different coffees to try. Thanks for that!
In 2011, I realized that certain things make me happy and I don’t think I’ll ever tell myself that I must go without something for an extended period of time so my resolution in 2012 is just focus on things that make me happy and to run a 10k and run 3x a week.
One of my favorite promos that Starbucks ever did was the Bold promo because it showed regular coffee users that Starbucks still cares about them. I loved that they alternated the coffees so you knew that you wouldn’t be drinking Italian Roast for 3 weeks.
In addition, I am very excited that I found one of the Starbucks free coffee in Jan tumblers and took advantage of the BOGO on the Christmas Espresso Roast last week by buying 6 pounds of coffee (It was a good deal:)) 2011 was also the year that i realized that I could have gingerbread syrup and love it.
For 2012, I would love for Starbucks to discover a dairy free Pumpkin syrup.
It will be interesting to see where, when and how Starbucks rolls out the new juices too,
Happy new year! I’m a lurker here, and I don’t get to read everything, but I’m going to try to read more often in the new year so I can stay more up to date on what’s going on in the stores! Thanks for keeping up a great blog, Melody.
My New Year’s Resolutions:
1. )Blog More
2.) Eat Better
3.) Fix all of my domains
4.) Finish my Coffee Master Work
5.) Stress less.
Not really in that order, though.
I’m excited about the EvolutionFresh Juice and Blonde Roast coming out in 2012, and I can’t wait to see what else is going to happen this year! I have a great feeling about my career this year, too! <3
my resolutions are really just a continuation of the things i started in 2011:
keep going to the gym
make my car pmts on time
continue to fundraise for a local org that shares what i believe
keep on lovin’ up Starbucks
the only new thing i want to do is hit a state i haven’t yet been to, i’ve got 9 to go so i’m hoping i’ll find a way to add one of them to my states i’ve visited. 😀
@BCav – I am looking forward to your blog posts! Keep ’em coming. I have the comment luv plug in on this site – be sure to put your blog in so we can all easily enjoy it. 🙂
@Meadowgirl – Those are great resolutions. And making payments on time is something I need to improve a bit on too. :-0
Note to self: Add @Violetsouffle in for two entries.
Happy new year everyone! My resolution is to be braver&try new things. I’m not the most social person, so this is big for me.
Some of my absolute favorite posts of yours are the store reviews, I really love seeing the different ways Starbucks stores are set up&how they integrate community. As a mom, I would be excited to see some posts on the starbucks kid menu- I’ve never really understood what their kid drinks include or exclude or if they are ad completely customizable as adult drinks. Obviously I don’t want my kid having lots of caffeine, but does that have to mean the only drink for her is hot cocoa? Going to Starbucks is something fun we do together as a family& she loves it as much as us& will probably be a lifetime Starbucks customer.
I love the store posts… please do more of them. Also more info on Clover and its deployment. Despite living in a very urban area the nearest Clover is 40 miles away. I enjoy the giveaways, although I like these kind of giveaways where they are random during a certain time frame rather than the “first x to post” ones. Some of us don’t check Twitter constantly and can’t post to blogs during work.
Melody, Stumbled upon your site, when googling an old Starbucks mug so All of this is new to me, Gotta say lov’n it. Live in So. Cal and while there are prob. at least 6 within 1 mile of me, I definately have my favs. Have you ever done a blog abou some of the things that we wish Bux would bring back as far as edilbe items go. I can get a doughnut anywhere, it seems the cases at mine are always filled with them in the A.M. I wish they would go back to 1993-1995 when they always had goodies that followed the seasons more so than now. Summer had Orange loaf along with Lemon, No doughnuts, more muffins and scones, the older ones tasted better before they changed recipes, and they always had a little tart of somesort more of a decedent item. I long for those things again. I know change is good but heck, my not a little what’s old is whats new. Thanx, Steve
I absolutely love everything about your blog Melody! I tell everyone about it. My favorites are always store reviews. Especially the ones about unique stores. I enjoy the pictures and always want to visit the various stores.
I do appreciate the comments, good or bad, about your experiences at each store, because they are a reminder of why I love Starbucks and how I like to do my job. It’s all about the experience for customers AND partners… Having fun, feeling comfortable, good stuff!
My new resolution is 1024×1280.
I was so excited when you told of the packaged lunches and snacks… I went out to my starbucks only to find out no stores in Knoxville TN would have these… i was bummed to say the least!
Happy New Year, Melody! Best wishes to you in 2012…
I like the articles regarding test food and drinks and international stores!
What I want to see is more… Store reviews!!! I love how they tell me about the stores!
You have an amazing blog!
Happy New Year (again, lol)!
Well, first thing: I’m a sucker for posts featuring International Starbucks coffee houses! Only this time, I hope that you get the opportunity to travel abroad and explore the Starbucks in Europe!
Or Canada. Canada still counts as international, right? 😛
I am always surprised at how “in” the know you are for someone not officially connected to Starbucks. I am sure my wife isn’t the only partner to hear things first her. Thank you for keeping us “in the know” also.
Mark
You’re outstanding, Melody. I really appreciate reading your blog entries that are so well written. Keep up the great work. I wish that somehow you could get a great interview with Uncle Howie, one-on-one at say Olive Way. You could be like Barbara Walters.
@BostonStarbucksRebel – It would be a dream to interview Howard. And thank you for making smile. That was downright sweet – not rebel-ish! 😉
@MikeLove – Just luck. I have some advantage of being close to the headquarters here. I talk to a lot of partners and hear buzz, and I make a lot of guesses, but honestly I don’t know that much. I’m glad I have a good poker face.
I am surprised so many people comment that they like the store reviews. I love store reviews, but I notice that they all get the smallest number of people commenting about them, yet so many people above said they like them. That’s interesting to me!
How bad is it that the first thing I thought of this morning, was “I get to use my tumbler all month for “free” coffee!!” 😛
@Rachel – I love it. I thought the same thing. And then thought, ‘Oops. I left the tumbler on my desk at work.’
I love reading your Starbucks Blog! I enjoy the photos & stories from Starbucks locations all over the world & also enjoy seeing the products that they sell in other States & Countries!
One thing I wish Starbucks would do ~ as a Gold Card Member ~ is put our “Free Drink Rewards” directly on our account. I can tell you that there is no way I’m getting all my Free Drink Reward Cards in the mail.
Happy 3rd Blog Anniversary & Many More To Come Your Way!
Sharii
I have to ask…how many people got their first free January coffee today?! 🙂
I’m so excited to try the new blondes coming out soon. I saw the bags tucked away in ‘hiding’. I don’t expect I’ll be a huge fan of them, I like the bold, but new coffees are always fun! 🙂
I too like the store reviews. I can travel without leaving my chair. But even more I get to see the creativity of different stores and wish some of this new design was implemented around here. So boring in too many stores. I really liked the chalk art blog pieces.
I love reading about registered card benefits and other Starbucks policies that I’m pretty sure of, but don’t want to push in the store without confirming in some way first. I especially liked reading about the refill policy. Most baristas I encounter seem to each have their own interpretation of the policy, none of which actually match the true policy!
I also like reading about the stores in other areas. I like to stop at Starbucks when I travel, but I don’t generally get to the west coast.
@ Hayley – My husband was excited to use his free coffee tumbler yesterday morning. I’m betting once he wakes up, he’ll want to go again today. Might be a good excuse to have him take me out for breakfast! 🙂
@ Sharii – I’d love to see the free drink rewards on our cards too! Panera (and others) can do that, so why can’t Starbucks? Maybe it’s part of their plan… if half of the cards get lost in the mail, they don’t have to give away as many free drinks. Or maybe you and I just share the same crummy mailman.
Thank you for three years of run and information! What I love best is the positive polite community (as opposed to the official community).
I like blogs what update 2-3 times i week, but even i can’t keep up with that on my own.
The posts I like best are educational (what are the rewards) that can be used to link friends too, new product / tests, and the bits of history to give us all a chance to look back.
Maybe you can coerce some more people into guest posts? who knows!
Happy new year to all!
@Amazonv – Yeah that is an area where I am weak – guest blog articles. It would be great if I could devlop that more. While there were lots of real pros and cons to it, I kinda liked the Juan Valdez articles, about 4 years ago on SG. Yes, I would love to have a guest blogger now and then.
As so many others have said, I realy like the store reviews too. But, I think I really most enjoy the Sbux info….whether it’s about ‘rewards’, and who got what, or coffee-stuff….and COFFEE…those are the ones, I think, that seem to get the most comments here. ? I don’t know, just a guess.
Of course I loved all the Chicago area store reviews from your trip here 🙂 …..especially, as you referred to, so people could see some Sbux outside the west coast on your blog.
I think it’s really good we all keep in touch here re: Sbux….as in: look what happened with the ‘new pckging’ and the losing of a free tall beverage…..for how many people ? until we talked about it here and resolved it. ?? and so many other things….new and old…old especially because I think there is no idea out there with so many customers who may have only been going to Sbux for ~ the last 5 yrs. They highly likely have no idea what Sbux used to be….. and how much is missing now from the real COFFEE world it used to be.
I should now just stop talking….I could go on and on. (very non-linear 😉
Must say, my favorite posts are always about the test items. I’m grateful for your attempts to actually try many of the items, like going to Sacramento to try the Pink Lime Frozt. I guess because I’m a partner, I’m not as excited about the posts that reveal some of the company’s inner workings, but that’s just me.
My personal highlight for the year was finally accepting a store manager position again, it’s been 3 months and I’m having more fun every day. In 2012, I’m starting the Coffee Master program (again, I was previously certified under the old program), and pushing our management team in the Central Valley to get us a Clover somewhere in our Area! I get jealous every time I read one of your Clover posts!
Happy New Year Melody, and keep up the great work.
