Happy New Year to all my readers! Have you made any resolutions for 2012? Don’t forget that you can bring in your tumbler (meaning the limited promo tumbler) for free coffee refills during the month of January. The previous article about that promotion is here.
I decided to start the new year with a blank slate: a totally open thread. Feel free to share your resolutions for the year, or what you want to see at Starbucks this upcoming year, or anything Starbucks-related. The funny thing about having a blog like this is that it is a bit like have a restaurant: I have to always have an enticing menu of food or else people will quickly lose interest. The novelty effect wears off fast. As I look back at 2011, there were a number of store review articles, history lessons, and leadership stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. For me, a number of the high-notes for 2011 were as follows:
- The future of Starbucks has great promise – I was on cloud 9 watching the new logo be unveiled and listening to Starbucks leadership talk about the future of Starbucks. (This blog post includes audio of Mr. Howard Schultz, CEO). (January 2011)
- Starbucks store review – Austin, Texas – In February this year, I took a trip to Texas, and this Starbucks store in Austin, Texas stood out as one of my very favorite segments of the trip. (February 2011)
- Joe Magazine (1999) – I particularly love glancing back to the Starbucks of the 1990s, and seeing the history lessons for this big company. Joe Magazine was a creation of Starbucks and sold in-stores everywhere in 1999. The magazine tanked. (March 2011)
- Howard Schultz answers customer questions – This is a short audio segment with Howard Schultz answering a few random customer questions. The actual event that this is audio comes from was held on April 21, 2011, and was part of the Onward book tour. I didn’t get it up on the blog until May 2011, but it’s still a gem. The Onward book tour created a large number of events with opportunities for customers to directly throw questions at Howard Schultz. I only wish that I could have personally been at any one of the events. I do have a friend in Chicago that got her Onward book signed at one! (May 2011)
- The Clover Starbucks in Park Ridge (Chicago area) – This was another highlight for my year. I took a trip to Chicago over Memorial Day, and saw a few Clover stores there. I have so few blog posts about stores outside of the West Coast, and this trip was a delight, as I met up with two very nice friends, and met some great partners there too. Actually, every store that I visited on this Chicago trip was a lot of fun, so it was difficult to pick this blog post over any of the other Chicago-area store reviews. (June 2011)
- The Pink Lime Frozt (a Starbucks test beverage) – I took a trip to Northern California, and had the chance to try a test beverage called the Pink Lime Frozt. It was a lot of fun to get to try this unique Frappuccino-like drink, but I doubt this will ever make the menu! (July 2011)
- The butter coffee tasting: Starbucks Anniversary Blend – The Olive Way Starbucks (in Seattle’s Capital Hill neighborhood) hosts regular coffee events. I highly suggest you visit if you can. This was a world-class coffee tasting experience as we tried butter in our coffee! It’s a must-read! The partner who guided our coffee tasting is the world-famous “Mikey,” also known as “Mr. Opportunity” because his face can be seen on a Starbucks employment window cling on the windows of Starbucks stores all across North America. (September 2011)
But I want to know what YOU want to see on this site. What do you like and what do you not like? And how often do you want to see new articles? Knowing all these things will help me formulate blog content for 2012. This blog is going on three-years old. (I started in early September 2009, so I guess about 2 and half years, but it feels like MUCH longer! It feels like I’ve been at this for years.) I am still amazed that I haven’t run out of Starbucks stories!
Despite what it might look like, this is still a relatively small Starbucks blog. As far as I can tell, nothing has ever gone “viral” from this site. Actually, that might be a totally fun thing to have happen in 2012, but I’m not going to hold my breath. I really appreciate everyone who comes back over and over again to join in the comments, and “like” the blog posts and is a part of this community.
I really do want to know all your Starbucks-thoughts. If you have ideas on what I should cover, do tell. And as I said, this is an open thread. I want to entice everyone to come give feedback on what you liked in the past (or did not like): Every comment left below will be eligible for a $75 grand prize Starbucks card. (Maximum two entries per person.) All comments must be posted before 8:00 p.m. (PST) January 2, 2012. I’ll throw all the names into a hat, and pull one out as a winner. Actually, I’m going to entice my friend “LatteRose” to pull the name out of the hat, so she is not eligible to participate. (Sorry Rose!) Be sure to use a valid email address when leaving a comment so that I can easily email you and let you know if you’ve won. Winners must have an address in either the United States or Canada. As always, comments may not descend into personal attacks, or any rude and harassing comments. No spam. The $75 Starbucks card has already been purchased and is just waiting for a winner! (See attached image).
Thank you again for a great 2011! I hope 2012 is even better!
~Melody

Oh… I forgot to mention earlier how much fun it is to have a Seattle Starbucks card to use. I think most of the local baristas are jealous that I have one and that there are no local cards for this area.
Happy New Year to all!
My resolution is to continue feeding my caffeine habit!
@Steve — in your comment on 12/31/11 you mentioned that you don’t know how to do the “smilies”. Well if your up for it, here is a link for Smilies/Emoticons in WordPress:
Don’t let the technical aspect of this page scare you. There is a table a little way down on the page that you can print by highlighting the table, use your browser’s print function and select the “Print range” button option “Selection” to print just the table.
Hope this helps. Us ol’ dogs need to help each other out 😉
@Melody — don’t be disappointed that your blog has not had that “viral” moment. Your blog is not a flash in the pan and will provide you with many more years of enjoyment, with the occasional frustration to keep you on your toes. You have a wonderfully diverse and growing following, a good balance of “Partners” and “Customers”.
I too like your store reviews and would like to see more. I would not expect a lot of comments on them, but you never know.
As for suggestions; I would like some coffee discussions, particularly with the changes in vernacular (Bold -> Dark, etc.) and packaging. Also a discussion on brewing at home, press, drip, pour over, single cup brewers, home espresso machines, grinders, storage, …
So far my “drink brew free cup” is working great, hope I don’t wear it our before the end of the month. In fact it got me a free brew on Saturday; I walked in to my favorite Starbucks, the SM was on the register, I remarked that it was already the new year in Australia, she said “then this one is on me, that’s the best line I’ve heard in awhile to get a free coffee”.
Next week should be interesting with the new coffee rollouts. The SM at my favorite Starbucks is being coy, but it sounds like a lot of tasting is planned and some free samples of beans (pre-ground).
aargh — 🙁 😮 8-0 😡 — forgot to close the link code so everything after the first paragraph became the link, where is an editor when you need one. Clinking anywhere on that gets you to:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Smilies
Sorry about that folks. 😉
My resolution is to buy more cranberry bliss bars and freeze them. They are gone too soon.
Here goes nothing but I gotta give it a try and then I gotta go and pay my VISA card online which is so easy even a cave man can do it…I can 😕
Wowwie, zowwie, zonkers I did it! Thanks Mr. Cooks only shows that you can teach an old geezer new tricks. Now to go and pay my bill 😉
Since this is an open thread, has anyone else noticed this food item:
http://wwwstage.starbucks.com/menu/food/petites/raspberry-truffle-cake-pop
^ When does that cake pop launch? It sounds a bit too sweet for me.
Here’s the chicken sausage breakfast wrap that I’ve been hearing about:
http://wwwstage.starbucks.com/menu/food/hot-breakfast/chicken-sausage-wrap?foodZone=9999
^ That looks good. I had always liked that heuvos rancheros (sp?) wrap, and I’m looking forward to another breakfast option.
Good job Steve, I knew you had it in you 🙂
I resolve to share Starbucks with as many friends as I can… especially if I win the gift card! 🙂
Except for the brief mention of the cake pop by Diele earlier in this post, I have not seen or heard of that cake pop. If I had to guess…I think it would launch in January, probably when the blonde coffees or the breakfast offering launches.
It was a lot of fun reading some of your favorite articles, I’d love to read more about where you think the future of Starbuck’s is headed, they’ve made a lot of changes in 2011 and I’m on board. I honestly love reading about what else Starbuck’s is up to and more store reviews, Starbuck’s has a knack for making their store experiences unique. 🙂 btw, I love the limited edition dragon sbux card! LOVE that it comes in a red envelope too! Thank you for the opportunity! Cheers & Happy New Year! 🙂
Melody-
Look for an early launch of the cake pop tomorrow (1/3) and a release on new blond roast coffees next tuesday (1/10) quickly followed by a tasting event the same week. The reserve coffee, Java Blue, will also be out and Casi Cielo follows next month.
In regards to the blog…
I highly enjoy reading about Starbucks in other areas, especially Seattle, where exciting and fresh things are happening. I love hearing how stores integrate into their communities. The coffee tastings are fantastic and a wonderful way to share in someone else’s coffee experience, to connect across the world. Connecting over coffee, truly highlights what Starbucks has always been about.
Thanks for the time you take to keep up this blog, it is one of my favorite daily reads.
@Becks – Your second comment really warmed my heart. (And I am looking forward to new food coming and Casi next month. :)) Thank you – You keep me going!
Aww, I’m sad I missed the deadline…but I really love the posts where you post pictures of Starbucks collectibles…these posts are my absolute favorite!!!
OH! I also love any post that deals with Seattle Starbucks!!
@Taylor – Long time no talk. I’m glad you like the collectibles. I sometimes think that what is a ‘collectible’ is a little subjective. 😉 But one of my favorite finds was the 1999 Starbucks snow globe. I love it!
I love learning about the very latest in Starbucks news from your blog. You keep me up to date about my most favorite place in the world and the source of my addiction! LOL 🙂
The new cake pop and wrap comes out tomorrow. (:
Question- It seems to me that the bistro boxes are not in favor anymore. They seem to sit at my local store. Has anyone else had this experience at their store?
You didn’t get an Onward book signed?
Someone has to rectify this situation.
@purple1: yes, I agree with you. They were a big hit (here) for a VERY short time. They do sit and don’t sell nearly as well as I am guessing Sbux would like. I was told this by an sm, too…they’re not selling well at all. I think they were just not good enough, overall…. I think the pre-packaged sandwiches are good but actually a little costly….considering what they consist of. I do like them , tho…..and I’m guessing Sbux found they can’t do both (bistro boxes and the sandwiches) very well…at least not in some areas.
The bistro boxes still sell pretty well at my store. In a day, we sell 5-10 protein plates, 3-5 fruit and cheese plates, 1-4 chicken wraps, 2-4 hummus plates, and we stopped carrying the seasame noodle.
@Purple1 – The bistro boxes sell well in my area. I frequently see my colleagues grabbing them for a quick lunch, and by the end of the day, my local Starbucks are usually out of them. I think they do extremely well in ‘tower’ stores – i.e. stores deep in business districts. ?? Just a guess.
@Diele – Funny how I can know a lot but then know nothing. LOL. I didn’t realize that the new cakepop and the sausage chicken breakfast sandwich launch today. I didn’t know they were coming until only a few days ago.
@Kellie Rose Wilson – Thank you! I hope maybe you’ll come back and comment again too.
@DaveWakeman – I never had a chance to hand Howard Schultz a book and get it signed for me. I did write to a contact person at the PR department to find out if would be possible to get a signed copy. I got a stock autograph copy, (you know they probably have a small stack of pre-signed books with his name in it for those kind of requests??) with just his autograph. That’s the best I could do. I am thankful to have it!
I tried the Chicken Sausage Wrap this morning. That was definitely good. It’s a doable option for a morning breakfast on the go. Much more flavorful than the spinach feta wrap. Probably not all that healthy, but other than getting the Starbucks oatmeal for breakfast, I don’t think all that much on the menu is really ‘healthy.’
Melody…
I saw your question about the new Dark Chocolate Raspberry Cakepop and I had one on the 2nd here in Southern Cal. It’s actually NOT TOO SWEET because I think they used a bittersweet chocolate to balance it. I love it, Not a fan of the other cake pops, the birthday one to me is just Ok, the Chocolate Peppermint Brownie pop was good and this one is my favorite so far. I especially like the powdered raspberry sprinked on top it’s yum-o.
Dad Cooks,
I see you help a fellow person on here on how to add a smiley, I was wondering if you could also help me out with adding a picture….Over to the right hand side of my name it has a gray picture outline and on some people it actually has their real picture. How can I add mine? Any help would be great.
Melody I guess I still do not understand why when SB introduces new food items they always have to be filled with sausage or bacon or cheese? Is it so hard for them to create a breakfast sandwich that is healthy and vegetarian? I know there is oatmeal and I like oatmeal, but it would be nice to have other options.
This sandwich is not made with pork, but chicken style sausage. It’s not vegetarian, but it isn’t pork for once. I think the veggie and the spinach feta are decent vegetarian alternatives.
Today was sort of a soft launch of new menu boards(price changes in some markets) and food items(red tags back to black with the two new items).
@Supersteives — the pictures come via a site called Gravatar http://www.gravatar.com.
Simply put, you go to this site, create an account, upload a picture or pictures, associate the picture you want with an email address, and after a short period of time any posts you make to a supported service (WordPress blogs being the key one here) using the email address will show the picture.
Signing up for this site is safe and is not going to get you on a spam list.
Setting it up is relatively straight forward and there is a Help (top right of page) with a common questions area. You can associate several email addresses with your account and have different pictures for each. If you want to change a picture it is easy and the new picture will automatically appear on all your old and new posts.
Hope this helps, thanks for asking for my assistance.
Dadcooks, I don’t want to bog down the blog comments, but thanks for the help. I’m signed up & good to go. Thanks, steve
@supetsteives and @dadcooks Dont worry about the off topic comments. It is an open thread and I am glad DadCooks was able to help!
Supersteives — Your welcome.
Yay Starbucks! I could use a chai tea right about now!
I’m lov’n my Kumodo Dragon Blend mug I got today…Like the tumbler too.
I wish I could see/buy one. They are a part of the set up/launch for next Tuesday. I only saw the mug and love it! I have one from 2006. I wish they would release a Verona one for Valentine’s Day one year – it is the coffee of love. 😉
New merch coming next Tues? So exciting. I am totally in the dark. What other coffee tumblers will there be other than Komodo Dragon?
2 Valentines day tumblers…One smaller with a red heart on it I think it was a 10oz. then another that was larger prob. 14oz or 16 and it was balck with a tiny red heart printed on it with an equal sign next to it then the words coffee (Hear graphic = Coffee) then it also had a trail of tiny red hearts on it too. A red felt coffee sleeve with chain stiching of two hearts noticed a couple new tazo colored ceramic tall size cups nothing so spectacular on in lime green half white, one cinnamon red and half white and one baby blue half white. Also a new Tazo press cup…clear with a white rubber band around the middle and yellow on the inside of the press. I just noticed that the starbucksstore.com now has a lot of these cups now for sale. Check em out.
Have to say that I went to school where Howard Schultz once went to shool Northern Michigan Univ. He played football for short time, well there was never a Starbucks in Marquette Mi. when I attended but after visiting now, I thought that maybe just maybe there would be something special there. Not so much….Maybe it’s even a franchise? Just like one in a Target store. Basic small, not frills or artowrk. There is one however by my house in So. Cal here that has the coolest framed picture of a watercolor print of an espresso machine. I wish it was mine. I looked at it for a short time trying to figure out if I could rip it off the wall and make it outside before being stopped. I guess I didn’t feel quite ambitous enough, No cool watercolor expresso prints in my posession. It would great however, if they made those pictures into Notecards.
Ok so we are the lucky ones on the east coast that get a price increase!!!! Thanks SB!
@Supersteives — Thanks for the note that some of the new products are already in the Starbucks Store.
Took a look at the Komodo Dragon Blend Tumbler, noticed a big selling point (also MSI requested idea) that this tumbler is dishwasher safe. Okay price point but must not be made in USA as there is no mention. I will definitely add this one to my collection. (I do hope Starbucks adds a Komodo Dragon china mug to go along with the French Roast, Italian Roast, and Breakfast Blend mugs that came out this fall.)
Now if it just keeps the coffee warm. The “drink free in January” cup cools down quicker than a paper cup (IMHO and all the other regulars at my favorite Starbucks). This is a real bummer for some who come in to get there coffee and head off to work, it is cold by the time they get to work.
@DadCooks – there is a china mug for Komodo. (the gray mug/white icon) http://sbux.co/x3OyTQ
And I agree about the dishwasher safe – I don’t like the new cold cups b/c they are not dishwasher safe (but the tall sized Christmas one is). As a single parent, the dishwasher is an important partner in my life! 😉
Speaking of dishwasher safe, I had a couple comments about the 12 days tumbler that you can use for free coffee in January. I have one and it’s my first plastic Starbucks tumbler (I usually only get the double walled stainless ones that are dishwasher safe).
While I appreciate free coffee, the tumbler seems quite awkward and poor quality. It doesn’t seal very easily (so it drips/spills) and it does not retain heat for very long. Is this a poorer quality tumbler, or are all of the plastic ones similar to this?
@Purple1 – I think that different regions got price increases at different times. @CD – All of the plastic tumblers lose heat pretty fast. I don’t notice this being any different than any others in terms of quality.
There was a big white tumbler several months ago that really did an amazing job of NOT leaking or spilling:
http://starbucksmelody.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2-18-3530-White-Grande-Logo-Tumbler.jpg
But after this promo is over, I probably will go back to tall size tumblers. A grande is just too big for me.
@DadCooks – Sorry about the link thing gone wrong in one of your comment. When the blonde coffees launch, that might be a good time to write something about the new vernacular. That is a good idea! It is next Tuesday that the blonde coffees launch?? Does anyone know?
As the analytics of this site, and something going ‘viral’ – I’ve learned about blogs from having a blog. My sense is that there are only a few larger non-official blogs. There are a couple of sites that are ‘traffic estimators’ out there but I don’t totally trust them. In any case, it seems like there are about 3 larger, non-official blogs, and I think I am either the 2nd largest or the 3rd largest. In 2011, 222,000 absolute unique visitors came to this site. That’s big for an ordinary person who is just producing a blog like this, but small compared to so many bigger blogs. Brian Solis would laugh at it. The Huffington post probably has my yearly traffic in a few hours. In the end, it’s like counting your bank balance. Could always be more, could always be less. I still think it would be fun though to have a viral story in 2012! But I don’t write the kind of stuff that does that.
@CD – Oh I am familiar with that Komodo Dragon mug. It’s just not that exciting to me. I think of the old classic coffee stamp mugs – You know exactly what I mean! I have a few that you sent me.
http://www.starbucksmelody.com/2010/03/30/four-1995-starbucks-coffee-stamp-inspired-mugs/
Blonde definitely launched Tuesday and will take adjusting for all of us. Brewing four coffees in the morning will be strange – most stores have air pots to do decaf.
just a quick note re: Valentine’s…I have 3 large mugs from some Valentine’s years….. the Italia (2003) Sbux Barista collector series….very beautifully designed…says “La Dolce Vita” on the inside. (made in Thailand) Then a beautiful red one with all romantic symbols and Shakepeare…from Romeo and Juliet..made in China…no yr on it but early/mid 2000’s, I think. very pretty. (It has an image of an old key, with a heart, on the inside) and also another , totally different one from unknown yr..I guess again around mid 2000’s….. made in Taiwan) that’s also from Romeo and Juliet, very pretty with a quote from Romeo on it.
I do hope Sbux does “up” Valentine’s day….. been very ‘lacking’ in recent yrs, in my mind and this seems like a perfect time for them to …play it up.
@CD — thanks for the Komodo Dragon cup link, sometimes these ol’ eyes cannot see the forest for the trees (as in click on “view all”, doh!). ;-0
@ CD – I have no idea what possessed my husband to see just how well the free coffee tumbler seals, but he has turned his completely upside down while filled and there are no leaks. Maybe it’s just your tumbler? Or perhaps he’s the lucky one with the super-sealing tumbler.
